To think this is beyond weird!?

This is driving me nuts and I've NC to post. My DS went to the zoo with his class last week. Came home with lots of stories and a new pencil and notebook. They had a really fun day.

A bit later via the class group text a message comes in from a parent saying thanks to the mum who anonymously phoned the zoo and bought them all a souvenir pencil and book.

For the next multiple hours there are messages from mum after mum after mum thanking this anonymously gifter. Hmm

No one knows who it was. Then yesterday there was a note from the teacher saying thanks to the mum who anonymously did this.

AIBU to be weirded out by this. I mean, why do that? Why!!!

Why not? It's hardly a nasty thing.

MrsJamin · 18/10/2016 08:31

It sounds nice albeit very generous. Are you just annoyed by the messages or by her giving your child a gift?! The group text sounds annoying, wouldn't it be better to have a Facebook group or something?

SuperManStoleMyPants · 18/10/2016 08:32

It was the mum who first messaged the thanks.

taps nose

Oysterbabe · 18/10/2016 08:32

Why is it beyond weird??! It's a lovely thing to do.

monkeysox · 18/10/2016 08:33

Yabu it's nice.

claraschu · 18/10/2016 08:33

Do it because it's nice- a random act of kindness. Why is that weird?

GinIsIn · 18/10/2016 08:34

If the pencil had turned out to have tarantula eggs in that hatched out in your house, or something, that would have been beyond weird. This is just someone doing a nice but fairly mundane gesture.

Redglitter · 18/10/2016 08:40

Why on earth are you weirded out by it Confused

Maudlinmaud · 18/10/2016 08:43

It's a pencil! Nice of her. The end.

Jellybean83 · 18/10/2016 08:44

Thanking someone for doing a nice thing is weird? They must've spent a fortune, zoo prices extortionate.

HitsAndMrs · 18/10/2016 08:44

This is a shame. People can't do anything these days because it's 'weird.'
It was a lovely thing to do.

JustSpeakSense · 18/10/2016 08:48

Yes it is nice

But the whole 'anonymous' thing is weird and a bit overly dramatic. And then the outpouring of thanks....

It was a simple notepad & pencil not a kidney fgs Wink

chickenowner · 18/10/2016 08:49

I'm not sure why you think it's weird? I think she was being kind! Maybe she realised that not all the children could buy themselves a souvenir and that she easily can afford it.

Maybe you could explain further why you think it's weird?

Oysterbabe · 18/10/2016 08:51

If it wasn't anonymous you'd be sneering at her for attention seeking no doubt.

myownprivateidaho · 18/10/2016 08:51

Agree with others that it is not weird at all. It would have been awkward to do it non-anonymously, but as it was it was just a sweet thing to do. And thanking on fb is normal too surely.

mycatstares · 18/10/2016 08:52

It was the mum who first messaged the thanks.

It probably is!GrinGrin

NoFuchsGiven · 18/10/2016 08:52

What is it that you find weird? the gifting or the numerous thanking?

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 18/10/2016 08:52

She obviously had the money and wanted to buy the kids a treat but didn't want to come across as showy so did it anonymously. It's a kind thing to do, not weird at all.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/10/2016 08:52

Why do what??

The gift-buying, or the multiple texts?

The latter sounds more unreasonable than the former. Set up a FB group or something, fgs. Phone must've been pinging all day.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/10/2016 08:53

If it wasn't anonymous you'd be sneering at her for attention seeking no doubt

Good point.

FameNameGameLame · 18/10/2016 08:54

JustSpeakSense that's what I think. Why anonymously? Why call the zoo? Why not just send money with the teacher? Why do it at all? Hmm

PirateFairy45 · 18/10/2016 08:54

The mum who did it probably doesn't want to own up as the other mums might act odd around her next time they see her.

It's a nice gesture :)

GettingMuckyFingersCrossed · 18/10/2016 08:55

It's unusual but nice

44PumpLane · 18/10/2016 08:56

Plus why is it weird that everyone is saying thanks? Too often these days people don't express thanks, considering how easy it is to text "thanks so much" into the group, why wouldn't everyone say thanks?!
Notebook and pencil at a minimum of £1.50 per child (absolute minimum I'd guess), for say 30 kids- £45 is significant to a lot of people but means every child gets a take home souvenir which is lovely.

KoalaDownUnder · 18/10/2016 08:57

Well, why not?! Confused

Anonymously so that it didn't look as if she was doing it for credit, obviously.

Maybe she just thought it'd be nice for all kids to get a souvenir, and some parents can't / won't send their child with money?
