To not wear clean clothes everyday

Happyhippy45 · 10/10/2016 16:47

Clothes are not "dirty," they don't smell and I don't want to wash them. I hang them up on a peg/chair to air and wear another couple of times over the course of the week.
DH doesn't understand this and thinks it's a bit minky.
Talking about tops, jeans etc......not pants and socks. Bras are a whole nother subject.

Yep I used to wear clothes at least twice sometimes three or four times but now I have a baby who is sick on me most days so I consider it a major victory if an item of clothing lasts more than a day! (Or in fact more than an hour)

I wash everything after one wear.

Is his one of those Mumsnet parallel universes where we all swear blind we wash our bedding bi-weekly, but we wear clothes 2-3 times before they go in the wash?

After one wear? Everything?

So big chunky cardigans? Coats and jackets? In winter I may wear 3 or 4 layers, even at home I have a big chunky knit that I throw on top so I don't have to heat the house all day.
You would seriously wash everything after just one wear?

I do wash my bedding weekly, I also have to freeze duvets and pillows weekly and hoover the house 3 times per day.

I have to wash and tumble dry everyday also, as I can't use a washing line.

I miss washing towels and bedding in a line. However our circumstances prevent this.

So everyone washes their bedding weekly and never uses a tumble drier without making a sacrificial offering to the Gods of planetary resources?

Some very questionable claims happening on this thread. I've seen a number of tumble drier appreciation threads.

By the way, I don't have one, nor a 4x4 sadly, but I do wash my clothes after one wear and dry them on a heater airer. We have been known to stick the drier on willy nilly too!

To those who say that you don't realise you smell when you wear your clothes more than once how on earth do you know?
People might be smelling because their body is not clean. Or their clothes may have been unwashed for ages (weeks not days)
I used to go to my parents to pick up the children when they were cooking an evening meal and if they were making a curry the smell used to permeate every layer of clothing right down to my underwear so I would have to change everything even if had only been on for an hour.
The 'ugh you smell' mentality is very playground. I know when I smell. Whether its an hour into wearing something or two days.

I'm not asking someone else to pay for it?

They're not paying for it in monetary terms now, no. But they will pay as we increasingly fuck up this planet. We have higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere now then we've ever had in the history of human evolution. If we carry on like this, we may make the planet uninhabitable by all life, not just human life. Now, your personal tumble dryer use on its own is a very small part of this. But it's measurable and you don't have to do it. So why do it? The ecological cost is about as high as it can be.

I'll wear the same thing twice without washing it, but only if it's not the middle of summer, and I haven't been out "doing stuff" all day. I went to a birthday on Sunday and wore a black dress: did nothing but sit in the car on the way there/back, and and sat down at the event. I had showered that morning, and the dress was still clean, so I wore it the next day too.

Some things get washed after every wear: undies, socks, swimwear, stockings, anything that's been worn when it's hot, anything that's been worn if I've had a busy day, anything that's been worn after I've fake tanned etc.

Pants, socks, t-shirts one day. Jeggings/skinny jeans go all stretchy after a day so need washing to get back in shape. Jeans last until either I or DD gets something sticky on them, usually a couple of days max. Skirts and cardigans go a few days if nothing spilled. A bonus of giving up smoking is that more clothes go longer without a wash when I'm not adding a bad smell multiple times a day.

Oh and my dryer gets used maybe 5 times a year maximum. Perks of living in Australia. Grin

I don't have a tumble drier. 90% of my clothes are dried outside,Even in the depths of winter.

I use my tumble dryer pretty much every day. I'm American, it's what's done. Some people don't have washing machines at all (they go to laundromats or have them to be shared with other people in an apartment building) but I don't know a single person who just has a washer and no dryer.

I don't iron anything. Jeans and bras get a few wears, sometimes cardigans. Everything else gets a wash after one wear. Oh, not pajamas. I wear those a few times too.

When I was very young (in the 60s!), we used to wear our outer clothes, dresses, trousers etc for ages. Underwear changed every day though. Things have changed today of course, washing is much easier. But we really don't need to wash everything after one wash, it is a crazy waste of our resources. Very few people smell. Those that do are usually not washing themselves as well as nit washing their clothes. Or some smell musty, their clothes are damp. (Hate that smell, much worse than sweat!)

Underwear and socks daily. Bras after 2 days get handwashed. Wear t-shirt under jumpers- change them daily, jumpers can then get another wear or two. Trousers/jeans can get a few days. Towels twice a week, bedding weekly. DD(2) gets fresh clothes daily, sometimes more often (messy play at nursery). Duvet/pillows yearly. Hang everything out if it's not raining, clothes horse for the rest. Rarely use tumble drier. I shower and wash hair (after exercise) daily. Thought we were fairly normal!

"I do wash my bedding weekly, I also have to freeze duvets and pillows weekly and hoover the house 3 times per day.

What do you mean that you have to? Do you have an illness or is there someone making you do this?

"I can't imagine wearing a bra twice let alone for a week. Grim."

They don't get very sweaty as they're not covering your armpit. A top that's tight around the armpits would need changing more regularly than a bra.

Cheerful do you live somewhere where line drying isn't allowed, I know this is a thing in the US. There are now line drying movements, aren't there? Join the revolution!

We don't have a drier, got rid of it as I never used it. Everything is dried outside or on stand up thing.

Underwear every day, other stuff after a couple of wears at least. If I were a very sweaty person I might wash after every wear, I guess.
I find the level of germ-phobia and obsessive cleanliness irritating and probably actually unhealthy. And at times very illogical too - why are some of you saying it's gross to wear clothes more than once except jeans? Do jeans have some magical dirt and odour repellant property then?

Report
Olddear · 11/10/2016 08:18

All underwear/socks changed daily. Jeans or leggings two days wear. Pj's changed twice a week, bed linen changed weekly in summer, fortnightly in winter because if possible, I like to hang washing out, but I 'finish' it in the tumble drier but only in the winter months.
Towels changed daily.

Something I notice about a lot of people is they reek of the fragrance of their laundry detergent. It's not necessarily unpleasant but it's frequently overwhelming. I wonder whether some people equate 'smelling clean' to 'smelling very strongly of Daz or Ariel'.

I was about to say this! It's particularly bad when mixed with perfume.
It's like my mum thinks her house smells clean and fresh; it doesn't, it smells of various fake chemical smells - and yes, I do realise that everything is chemical but you know what I mean!

A tumble dryer not only uses resources it costs you money. If you are comfortable burning your money rather than hanging it up to dry then good for you you entitled lazy twat

Tumble driers cost nowhere near what they use to. I think the old ones burnt money but these days they are very economical to run,I seem to remember it being about £100 per year and I'm like meadow I use it all the time.

My washing pile is never ending with a ds who plays loads of sports. I hate to think what it would be like if I washed EVERYTHING after one wear! As it is the machine is on at least once a day and I consider myself quite lax compared to some of my friends.

I don't have the space to hang everything that needs to dry so I almost dry things then tumble them for 30 mins to finish off to make space for the next wet lot
