Obviously I know you eat it (well the baby will, I will not they're disgusting)

But I mean, what do I do with it? How do I get in? Do I peel it? Just hack straight into it? And then how do I get the lovely neat little slices to be ... Well lovely and neat?

I do have real things going on in my life too I swear Grin

Avocados are lovely and healthy! :)

With egg on toast, with chia seeds as a dip, mixed in a salad sauce, in sushi, guacamole, as a Sandwich filling, on a taco.... when I'm lazy I just smash them up, add olive oil and salt and then eat it like that. How can you not like them?

But then again, I'm not a picky eater. At all...

maddiemookins16mum · 10/10/2016 19:54

Yes, I've forced an olive past my lips on two occasions and avocado possibly twice. The olives were like eating salty eyeballs and avocado just tasted like sludge 😊.

ILoveDolly · 10/10/2016 19:54

Avocado is nice in a bacon or chicken sandwich.
Mashed up with lemon juice and black pepper (eat with toast or doritos)
Chopped into squares and added to a tomato and lettuce salad
Sliced with mozzarella and bits of basil that's basically another salad
It's just a tasty vegetable

HeyDuggee24 · 10/10/2016 19:58

If you don't take the stone out of the half you don't use and cover it with the empty shell of the half you did use it will keep a couple of days..if it makes it that long!

Avocado topped with prawns in marie rose is the best starter ever!

BennyTheBall · 10/10/2016 19:59

Mash and put on toast - ds has this for breakfast about 3 times a week.

Crack an egg into the hole and bake.

Guacamole - my dh makes the best.

Absolutely love avo on toast with a squeeze of lemon salt & pepper. Needs to be soft, unripe avo is gross. Love when my little one eats it, its a super food, full of good fats!

Tryingtobegood10 · 10/10/2016 20:06

Oh oh or even on pizza lol

Wiltom · 10/10/2016 20:18

mash it up and put it on toast as a spread with lemon juice on top - a perfect meal - good fats, carbs and vit c

nephrofox · 10/10/2016 20:18

My mum still calls them avocado pears. My 3 year old looks at her like she's crazy.

Avocados are nice in smoothies - with fruit and plain yogurt.

Also there's a thing on the web going round where you bake an egg in the middle of it. Not tried it though.

Thesoggybiscuiteer · 10/10/2016 20:25

Sliced with a ripe vine tomato, basil, mozzarella and fresh basil. Can take a drizzle of good olive oil, yum.

DeadGood · 10/10/2016 21:03

"I can recall when they were called avocado pears. We sold them in Safeway, circa 1978, and people would bring one to the till to purchase, casually asking the 16 year old checkout gal (me, rural Wiltshire lass) what to do with them. As if I'd know!"

I love this! Any more retro supermarket stories? Star

dailymaillazyjournos · 10/10/2016 21:34

Currently got a thing about the avocado choc mousse that was on MN a few months ago. Normally very dubious about anything like this but I absolutely love it. It's so smooth and I can't taste avocado.

1 avocado
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
4 tablespoons almond milk
Honey to taste.

Whizz the lot up. Gorgeous will strawberries/raspberries/banana on top.

Also love Guac.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 10/10/2016 22:41

If the avocado is perfect, you don't need to karate-chop the stome, it will pop out with a gentle squeeze. Then you scoff the avocado, telling yourself the health benefits completely outweigh the calories...

Whoever came up with the wheeze of selling ripe ones in two-packs is a very bad person.

FadedRed · 10/10/2016 23:09

This is the best ever kitchen gadget. It slice your avocado in half, removes the stone, then then the contents in neat slices. Takes seconds to prepare your avocado. Magic. No mess, no risk of cutting off your fingers with a sharp knife. Available from t'interweb or good kitchen supplies store.

I don't think anyone else has said this but if you just slice the top off rather than in half it keeps for longer. Handy if it's just you and you don't want the whole thing. You kind of use it like a jar and dig out with a spoon. Or maybe that's just in my houseGrin

avamiah · 10/10/2016 23:24

Well i have always seen them in the supermarket and thought about picking one up, but too be honest i wouldnt of known what to do with one until a new trendy cafe opened up the road from me and was advertising Avocado on toast for £3.95, so i tried it.
Very nice.

EmNetta · 11/10/2016 01:32

My first avocado was in an American restaurant in the sixties - with chopped strawberries where the stone used to be, and maybe sugar and/or honey. It was either pudding or salad, but friends told me they were good savoury too, which I've always preferred. Non-cooking brother adds avocados to virtually any combination in the Nutri-Bullet, seems a good way to get kale down - now that is a really nasty food....

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 11/10/2016 02:20

My mind is still reeling over the idea of eating avocados sweet with cream and sugar. I don't think I'll be trying the chocolate mousse thing any time soon.

Best way to store half an uneaten avocado is to put the stone back in the hole and cover with clingfilm so that the film directly touches the avocado, especially the cut surface. So it sort of looks shrink wrapped.

6o6o842 · 11/10/2016 02:55

Avocado is one of life's little pleasures! Cut it in half lengthways, twist the two halves to separate, tap the stone with a sharp knife (the blade, not the pointy bit) to remove and then slice the flesh and gently scoop it out with a spoon. My kids used to love it cut in chunks, mashed with banana or mashed on toast. I love it mashed on toasted sour dough bread with a poached egg, some feta and cherry tomatoes...divine!

Caipira · 11/10/2016 03:16

HeartsTrumpDiamonds I'm in Brazil and we have an avacado tree at work, so for two months of the year it becomes a daily requirement in the staffroom. Without fail, every year my colleagues look at me like I've grown an extra face because I don't put sugar on mine before I eat it. I've told them other parts of the world eat it as a savory food and they say I'm clearly mad Grin
