Obviously I know you eat it (well the baby will, I will not they're disgusting)

But I mean, what do I do with it? How do I get in? Do I peel it? Just hack straight into it? And then how do I get the lovely neat little slices to be ... Well lovely and neat?

I do have real things going on in my life too I swear Grin

-tuna
-banana
-toast
no pickles

I'm noting all these different ways to serve, I was pretty much just going to throw some slices his way - who knew?! Smile

Avocado goes with EVERYTHING.

MidniteScribbler · 10/10/2016 10:32

Why did you buy a whole trolley full if you didn't know what to do with them? Grin

ImperialBlether · 10/10/2016 10:34

They're not only sold in upmarket supermarkets - they're everywhere! Lidl and Aldi sell them really cheaply.

Rrross1ges · 10/10/2016 10:34

Do you work in an upmarket supermarket and did you buy a trolley full of them reduced?

Grin
NoCapes · 10/10/2016 10:34

Balls & Midnite what have I missed??

Don't mash it with chocolate and maple syrup in the belief that it will make a healthy, vegan chocolate mousse. It will not.

Rrross1ges · 10/10/2016 10:36

Oh and I give my children all sorts of things I won't eat because I'm vegetarian and fussy. Though I'll eat avocado but they won't.

RollerDiscoQueen · 10/10/2016 10:38

'Why are you feeding your baby something you think is disgusting?'

Presumably because she knows he has a different set of taste buds to her and may well enjoy it?

Just a thought.

justilou · 10/10/2016 10:39

Whack a large, sharp knife across the middle of the stone and twist. The stone will lift out when you raise the knife and clonk it on the side of the bin until it falls off the knife. Squeeze lemon juice over the avo flesh exposed to air to slow oxidisation and cover with cling film. Now - you can mash it on toast with lemon juice, salt & pepper, slice into salads, make guacamole, use as a face or hair mask, whizz into smoothies, etc. I love them. (Easy dip is 1-2 large avo, can of kidney beans (rinsed) and jar of salsa blended until smooth. (I like to add lemon juice and coriander as well, but you can season or not)

Tesco sell bags of frozen avocados, already peeled and destined. They work out cheaper than the fresh ones and don't go from unripe to overripe mush in a day like fresh. Okay, I probably wouldn't serve them at a dinner party, but they are fine for guacamole or mashed on toast.

queenc81 · 10/10/2016 10:41

Ballstomonty. I was going to say the same thing Grin

Hopefully the lady who wanted the cheap avocados doesn't see this thread, we don't want the green eyed monster coming back out Wink

RollerDiscoQueen · 10/10/2016 10:43

Did you know that as a nation we now buy more avocados than oranges?

CoolToned · 10/10/2016 10:45

Milk and sugar. You're welcome.

Goldenhandshake · 10/10/2016 10:46

You mash it and have it on toast with a poached egg, a little salt and pepper. Yum

FluffyFluffster · 10/10/2016 10:47

I was confused when I bought my first one too. I never ate them growing up and never really remember them being about the house.

I'd seen my sister cube it then scoop it out so I had that down but I had to ask my Mum about the best way to get the stone out.

acasualobserver · 10/10/2016 10:48

They are slimy fuckers. And when you bite them it feels wrong on your teeth. Bletch.

Strangely, though, guacamole is pretty nice.

LunaJuna · 10/10/2016 10:48

We know where the reduced price avocados from yesterday's thread ended up now!!!! GrinGrin

Try the Chilly con avocado recipe from Joe wicks book

HeyNannyNanny · 10/10/2016 10:49

Dammit. Someone beat me to cross referencing threads.

OP, look out for an AIBU supermarket thread.

Coffeegivemecoffee · 10/10/2016 10:49

I can't stand them avocado to me is snot but my baby has a love for them too capes

Favourites are with banana
On toast
Mixed in with some Greek yogurt
With pasta weirdo
With chicken and cauliflower weirdo

But I can't tell you how to get in one, I buy frozen from Tesco Grin

I am confused at the poster why feed your baby something you don't like, because the baby is a different person with different tastes. And it's good for children to taste a wide range of food.

Whathaveilost · 10/10/2016 10:53

Make sure the avacado is ripe. It should have a little bit of give when you squeeze it but not too much.

Use a sharpe knife. Stick the the pointy bit and slice around the avacado and then twist ti seperate it so you have 2 halves

With the half withoyt the stone i put the knife in the flesh and score long ways and then score width ways. So you have squares. I flip it inside out ans cut the end if the squares into a bowl. The stone shoyld pop out on the other one and repeat. Sounds ling winded but takes seconds.

Sometimes. I just cut in half add lemon juice and maybe a very small sprinkling of salt and scoop out and eat with a spoon.

Sometimes i put them into ds's banana smoothie. By the time there is almond milk. 2 bananas ,a tablespoon of cashewnut butter in he diesnt notice the half an svicado that he claims he doesn't like!

Avacado- a gift from the gods!!!

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 10/10/2016 10:55

For the kids I mash it with philadelphia and serve it with breadsticks or on rice cakes.

RollerDiscoQueen · 10/10/2016 10:56

I smear a bit of mayo and a bit of mustard on a slice of toast, avocado on top and then a sprinkling of lime juice and chilli flakes. SO good.

MerryMarigold · 10/10/2016 11:14

devilinmyshoes · 10/10/2016 11:16

Btw Op it is ok to eat when brown, unsightly but perfectly ok.
