To not know wtf to do with an avocado?

NoCapes · 10/10/2016 10:13

Obviously I know you eat it (well the baby will, I will not they're disgusting)

But I mean, what do I do with it? How do I get in? Do I peel it? Just hack straight into it? And then how do I get the lovely neat little slices to be ... Well lovely and neat?

I do have real things going on in my life too I swear Grin

Avocado is minging au naturel but it makes an excellent smoothie thickener as a banana alternative and actually tastes rather nice blended with fruit.

whyohwhy000 · 10/10/2016 18:56

Chocolate mousse!

Sara107 · 10/10/2016 19:00

Chocolate mousse, I don't like avocado and could not believe how nice this was (you could only taste the chocolate). I used a simple recipe, melted chocolate, avocado and a very small amount of sugar. Whizzed in food processor til smooth. There are some complicated recipes on the web with all sorts of odd ingredients but the simple one was lovely.

I think you'll find that the devil's snot is actually oysters

I think you'll find it's actually Okra.

woodsies1975 · 10/10/2016 19:00

Lakeland sell an avocado slicer - even gets the stone out.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 10/10/2016 19:03

Tuna and avocado together is lovely, it's one of my go-to lunches too with the addition of some feta cheese cut into small cubes. That all mixed up in a bowl and a couple of oatcakes and you've got a really healthy, delicious and filling lunch. The saltiness of the feta goes really well with the smoothness of the avocado.

YouCanShoveYourOtherGranny · 10/10/2016 19:05

you can certainly keep it overnight in the fridge as long as you put the stone back in - an a tiny squeeze of lemon juice also stops it going brown.

ChuckBiscuits · 10/10/2016 19:08

Avocado, pepper, honey and lemon juice eaten straight out of the shell is amazing. And a wonderful breakfast.

2kids2dogsnosense · 10/10/2016 19:09

You need medical attention NOW! There is something wrong with your tastebuds. Avocados are DELICIOUS!!!

ivykaty44 · 10/10/2016 19:11

Cut in half and eat with a grapefruit spoon, make sure it is ripe before cutting and the flesh will be easy enough to eat.

Tryingtobegood10 · 10/10/2016 19:16

Oh my God I love love love them!!!! Never ate them when I was growing up bit do about once a week now! Live to chop them up and have with pasta, adds a really creaminess ummmmmm

Gottagetmoving · 10/10/2016 19:18

I halve it and the skin peels away quite easily. Then I slice it thinly and put it in salads. It has to be just ripe...The skin doesn't come off so easily if it's over ripe, it's too mushy.
I didn't like it when I first tried it but is a taste that grows on you.

Unipottimus · 10/10/2016 19:21

Make sure it's ripe, cut it like the others have said. mash it with chopped tomatoes, fresh chilli, coriander, twist of black pepper, salt and lime. Serve on toast bruschetta style. NOM! (n.b. just whizz with a banana for the baby - they don't tend to like chilli.. Wink)

Also surprisingly good with bacon and poached eggs Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 10/10/2016 19:25

I have never purchased an avocado in my life, olives too. I have no intention of either. I prefer peanut butter on toast 😊.

SoftBlocks · 10/10/2016 19:26

Mash or blend with Greek yoghurt, honey and cinnamon or with melted chocolate to make chocolate mousse or with sugar and lime juice and cream to make ice cream.

luciole15 · 10/10/2016 19:28

Scoop straight on to a slice of bread. Drizzle in sweet chili sauce. Squash second slice of bread on top, and enjoy. Mm mm mm mm.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 10/10/2016 19:32

NicknameUsed that sounds gorgeous!

I have mine mashed onto Marmite on toast. Def. going to try what you've suggested though.

OP it was serving my son avocado when he was little that got me into eating them. Got one ripening in the fruit bowl now and looking forward to it. I do understand if you don't like them though.

DeadGood · 10/10/2016 19:34

"Today 10:18 Meadows76

Why are you feeding your baby something you think is disgusting?"

Can I nominate this as the most Hmm comment of the day?

Woolyheads · 10/10/2016 19:34

Mum always served avocado with salt and vinegar.
This is possibly because it was the '70s.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 10/10/2016 19:34

By the way I do eat half and reserve half, with lemon juice squeezed on, (sometimes) in a Tupperware container in the fridge.

EllyMayClampett · 10/10/2016 19:39

Make guacamole and dunk tortilla chips into it!

Guacamole:
-one ripe avocado mashed
-juice of half a lime
-salt and pepper
-half a small red onion finely diced
-half a small tomato, seeded and diced
-table spoon of finely chopped cilantro
-tablespoon of mayo
-dash of tabasco

Mix it all up. Heaven! (My husband and children who hate avocados, wolf this down.)

NicknameUsed · 10/10/2016 19:40

"Those who think avocados have no taste have never eaten one fresh off the tree."

I expect that will be true of 99% of us. I buy mine from Tesco. Avocado trees don't grow in Barnsley Grin

"I have never purchased an avocado in my life, olives too. I have no intention of either"

Have you actually tasted either of these? If you haven't how do you know you won't like them?

Rainbunny · 10/10/2016 19:41

I eat avocado on almost everything, in fact I had some chopped avocado on bolognese and sweet potato last night...

viques · 10/10/2016 19:46

I used to mash my avocados before putting them on the toast but have discovered that if you slice them and make a toast sandwich (helps to squish the toast firmly!) it makes less washing up for the poor little dishwasher to cope with. A few smashed walnuts on the top of the avocado before you put the second slice of toast on is good too. It is autumn, so I am back to bagels, mmmm avocado on toasted sesame seed bagels.

viques · 10/10/2016 19:47

Cilantro Elly May Clampet? you ain't in Kansa now!
