To be fed up of comparisons with 1930s Germany in U.K. politics?

Surely a better and far less potentially offensive comparison is the 1980s?

Labour in disarray, therefore weak opposition, and a female PM of course.

Comparisons with the rise of the extreme far right in Germany have little place. The BNP are the equivalent to Hitler and his party and thankfully have little mainstream support.

Nobody seems to have considered that perhaps they have the capacity for independent thought and different opinions.

They certainly do... Except when they are feeling concerned about , in which case they have reached this state not because of independent observation and thought, but due to being scare-mongered by the machinations of Remainers?

I can understand why many people felt the gamble was worth taking so they voted leave

I never thought we would leave I didn't give it a huge amount of thought before the referendum. But then it isn't up to us to be in touch with the electorate

Calm down, dears - calm down!

BillSykes said: It's been pointed out multiple before the schools survey is only asking for information which has already been taken for years.

This isn't true. We've just been asked by the school for DC's passport details for an educational census happening in Oct-16. This is a new thing. We've provided birth certificate, filled out full details on registration forms and stuff - but never been asked for their passports. (They want a scanned copy, or for us to bring them in). This has been all over Twitter too.

The govt is collecting data on my DC in a new 'education census'. Suddenly. After the Brexit vote. I don't like that. I just don't like it. I've not even provided the bloody passport details yet, although i probably will, because I'm not the rebellious type..

That must be something individual schools have decided to do because it's not policy and most schools aren't asking for this. My DS's didn't and we filled in a standard form.

This info hasn't been asked for in the census before, but it's been asked for in admission forms and other administrative documents. In fact one of the main teaching unions initial objection to the questions was that they were unnecessary because the Office of National Statistics already holds that data. So, yes, it has been collected for years, just not in this particular way.

One of the reasons Nazism was able to rise was the German public's anger at the terms of the treaty of Versailles, a punishment of a country stepping out of line with the European balance of power. Maybe that should be remembered when the EU negotiate brexit with the UK. Punishing us will not end well.

smallfox2002 · 09/10/2016 23:30

Although really nazism had lost much of its early support by 1928 and had a poor showing in the elections that year securing just 2 percent of the vote.

The thing that brought them back into the running was the 1928 stock market crash.

So a global financial crash followed by a slow and long recovery and parties that put the blame for all the ills of the country on other countries and immigrants.

Nah can't see that happening at all.

TheElementsSong · 10/10/2016 07:02

Good grief, this is a new and exciting angle. If the rest of the world don't give us everything we want, we're going to become a totalitarian war-mongering regime who will attack our neighbouring countries? Well doesn't that paint us (and our greatest people in the world that we have been exhorted to have such faith in) in a rather unflattering light?

Also painfully ironic.

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 10/10/2016 07:02

I just don't see it ending in genocide although in my darker moments I can't believe that we humans are going to come up with any different solutions to the world's problems than we always, ultimately, have done: war. I'm scared at how quickly we've ended up where we are from June 23rd.

frumpet · 10/10/2016 07:54

Just dug out my sons data collection sheet , which I will of course be sending straight back in , no tardiness here oh no ! OK this thread reminded me that I have had it for at least two weeks Blush
Other than the normal contact details , how you travel to school , school dinner/ packed lunch stuff , there are 4 little questions
Ethnicity , Religion , First language and Home language , these are pre-filled on this form as they are asked when the child first starts school and tend not to change during the course of a school year !

frumpet · 10/10/2016 07:56

Aaargh used ' Oh no!' , bloody Oxford reading tree has a lot to answer for Grin

frumpet · 10/10/2016 08:45

Under , I don't remember having to provide birth certificate details for any of my children starting school and they don't currently have passports .
