To have said out loud that the doll was hideous

My in laws went to visit an elderly distant relative and since then, they have been hinting that they have a really special item to pass onto my DD, like some sort of heirloom, but they didn't say what it was.
We went to visit them and as I entered the living room, there was what I can only describe as a terrifying girl doll sat on the sofa next to my father in law.
It had blue lips and ash/ blonde grey hair and looked like a corpse doll. I was horrified and said the first thing that came out of my mouth ' how hideous'.
Well, as you can guess, this was supposed to be the special ' heirloom gift. My MIL acted as though I had insulted one of her friends and said ' oh poor little girl, well, I think she's lovely'. My Dd was a bit perplexed and didn't seem to know whether to side with me or her Gran. Apparently it is an expensive American Doll. But the colours have faded over time giving it its deathly pallor. In my opinion absolutely horrific. We left it there.
DH thinks that I was a bit mean and blunt.

Have you seen the Film Annabelle?

Grin
SaucyJack · 27/09/2016 16:07

Couldn't you have saved it to use as a Halloween prop?

Littleballerina · 27/09/2016 16:07

Could you not have just accepted it and shoved it in a cupboard/ charity shop?
it was rude.

Chippednailvarnishing · 27/09/2016 16:07

Photo?

squoosh · 27/09/2016 16:08

Yeah, you were pretty rude. Whether you knew it to be the gift or not, and whether you find dolls like this creepy or not, it was clearly something they'd chosen to have in their home so why pass a negative comment on it?

How would you feel if someone said 'how hideous' to something you had in your home?

Viiolettheorgangrinder · 27/09/2016 16:09

Littleballerina, not before getting it valued first lol

squoosh · 27/09/2016 16:09

In my opinion absolutely horrific. We left it there.

I wonder if the elderly relative's feelings were hurt by this.

AmeliaJack · 27/09/2016 16:09

You left it? When it was given by an elderly relative as a gift?

Shock

The proper thing to do is accept it graciously and then put it in the loft.

PeaceOfWildThings · 27/09/2016 16:10

I love SaucyJack's idea! :D

HallowedMimic · 27/09/2016 16:10

Your husband thought your reaction was a bit mean and blunt? Are you normally worse? Grin

I'd have kept the doll, and showed it to everyone who ever visited us, just for fun.

Not every one has a corpse doll you know!

WordGetsAround · 27/09/2016 16:10

Don't you teach your children to accept gifts gratefully and say thank you? This was a very bad example to them and I think you embarrassed yourself

VioletBam · 27/09/2016 16:10

What brand of doll is it? I love dolls...even faded, cracked, warped and bald ones.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 27/09/2016 16:12

Oh Lordy, a real foot in mouth moment. You shouldn't have left the doll there though, that would have been really upsetting for the elderly relative. Unless she took back the offer herself?

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 27/09/2016 16:12

We had a family heirloom doll.

It was fucking hideous. No one wanted it so it got sent to auction and sold for about £7K.

I'm totally expecting it to crop up in a horror movie. Why else would some one spend money on the Doll Of Terror??

george1020 · 27/09/2016 16:12

You were very rude!

BoomBoomsCousin · 27/09/2016 16:13

Walking into someone's home and saying out loud that an item that almost certainly belongs to them is "hideous" is pretty rude and unreasonable in most circumstances.

I feel for you though. I am often a bit flabbergasted by the things people want to pass on to children. I frequently think they're hideous too!

Ameliablue · 27/09/2016 16:14

Yes, it may have been hideous but you were rude.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 27/09/2016 16:14

All dolls are hideous!

I won't have one in the house. At all. Ever.

I'm with you OP.

ButEmilylovedhim · 27/09/2016 16:15

How big was it? I'm imagining a primary school child sized doll! I hope it wasn't that big, otherwise that would be truly terrifying. Very unfortunate that the colours have faded thus worsening the horror! Maybe your inlaws don't want to give it houseroom anymore and thought if they talked up the 'heirloomness' so to speak, you'd take it off their hands!

squoosh · 27/09/2016 16:15

You can think dolls are hideous, no need to be a dick about it though.

PeaceOfWildThings · 27/09/2016 16:16

Were you at all grabby the last few times you visited his side of the family? I know a few elderly people who would mete out just punishment in this way! Grin

ChocChocPorridge · 27/09/2016 16:16

Goodness - my (lovely) MIL has occasionally bought things for my kids which I have firmly suggested stay at hers (I do not need bizarre ornaments my son picked from a charity shop)

Luckily she appreciates honesty, knows not all tastes are the same, and understands that sometimes I don't want things she buys (especially the stone in the shape of a heart engraved with 'Love' that she bought DS at a garden centre. She saw sweet ornament, I saw blunt weapon)

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 27/09/2016 16:17

I think it's fine to turn down the terrifying corpse doll, btw.

You can't accept other people's stuff just because it's polite. Nor should people force crap on you.

TaterTots · 27/09/2016 16:18

Even If you hadn't realised this was the heirloom, describing anything someone has in their house as 'hideous' isn't going to go down well. Hideous is rarely a compliment.

squoosh · 27/09/2016 16:18

But the doll wasn't being offered to the OP. I hope her daughter had a say in the fact it wasn't taken home.
