To have said out loud that the doll was hideous

My in laws went to visit an elderly distant relative and since then, they have been hinting that they have a really special item to pass onto my DD, like some sort of heirloom, but they didn't say what it was.
We went to visit them and as I entered the living room, there was what I can only describe as a terrifying girl doll sat on the sofa next to my father in law.
It had blue lips and ash/ blonde grey hair and looked like a corpse doll. I was horrified and said the first thing that came out of my mouth ' how hideous'.
Well, as you can guess, this was supposed to be the special ' heirloom gift. My MIL acted as though I had insulted one of her friends and said ' oh poor little girl, well, I think she's lovely'. My Dd was a bit perplexed and didn't seem to know whether to side with me or her Gran. Apparently it is an expensive American Doll. But the colours have faded over time giving it its deathly pallor. In my opinion absolutely horrific. We left it there.
DH thinks that I was a bit mean and blunt.

The doll wasn't for the OP. Her opinion should have been irrelevant really. How sad she had to make it all about her oh so hilarious fear of dolls.

'It really pisses me off when people want to pass down certain 'family heirlooms' that are actually a bunch of crap.'

Why would it 'really piss you off'? I think it's really weird that so many adults get their silly little knickers in a twist over a gift from an elderly relative to a young relative. And the need to make it all about them and their tedious fear of dolls.

Top tip: It's not about you!

OP, I feel your pain. I have 4 boxes of porcelain dolls in the loft that MiL gave to DSD. DSD wanted them in her room. Fuck, no.
Both DH and I were horrified when MiL produced these 'beauties' but managed to make grateful noises, despite the creepy bastards being lined up and watching us. Hmm

Bit unreasonable to say it was hideous, but lets be honest, it probably was hideous. Be nice, tell IL's DD would like doll after all, collect doll, put it in loft (minus head), then sell it on eBay when all the fuss has died down.

(already checked out eBay for my creepy loft-dwelling bastards)
