To have said out loud that the doll was hideous

My in laws went to visit an elderly distant relative and since then, they have been hinting that they have a really special item to pass onto my DD, like some sort of heirloom, but they didn't say what it was.
We went to visit them and as I entered the living room, there was what I can only describe as a terrifying girl doll sat on the sofa next to my father in law.
It had blue lips and ash/ blonde grey hair and looked like a corpse doll. I was horrified and said the first thing that came out of my mouth ' how hideous'.
Well, as you can guess, this was supposed to be the special ' heirloom gift. My MIL acted as though I had insulted one of her friends and said ' oh poor little girl, well, I think she's lovely'. My Dd was a bit perplexed and didn't seem to know whether to side with me or her Gran. Apparently it is an expensive American Doll. But the colours have faded over time giving it its deathly pallor. In my opinion absolutely horrific. We left it there.
DH thinks that I was a bit mean and blunt.

NO no no to suggesting putting the corpse doll in the loft. You don't want a corpse doll in the loft. Ever.

Wordsaremything · 27/09/2016 22:16

Some of these look slightly less ugly than many real babiesGrin

I saw one the other day that was really unfortunate looking . However, no doubt it's mother loved it and was not about to stick it in the loft .

I don't get the hysteria about dolls at all and I think OP was very rude to voice her feelings.

I didn't much like them as a kid as they were just boring- what were you supposed to do with them?

Mycraneisfixed · 27/09/2016 22:20

It was probably not the best comment but just the sort of thing I'd have saidHmm

Catsize · 27/09/2016 22:24

Big mistake reading this alone in bed just before lights out. Off in search of parking thread therapy...

originalmavis · 27/09/2016 22:25

For some unknown reason, a relative sent me a china faced doll (the kind that you used to see in 1970s horror films chasing people with boot button hooks and hauling their eyes out).

I loathe them and who buys a 30-something woman who does not like or collect toys a creepy doll? I gave it to the charity shop at the end if the road.

Bugger me, if they didn't put the damn thing in the window and it was, oddly enough, there for months. I swear it would smirk at me and wave a crochet hook in my direction as I put my head down and ran past the shop every day.

daftbesom · 27/09/2016 22:31

I am crying with laughter at the doll pictures. (Sorry, no help)

liz70 · 27/09/2016 22:38

Why, I'm tickled too, daft.

To have said out loud that the doll was hideous
TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 27/09/2016 23:00

There are websites dedicated to selling haunted dolls. Op, you could've made a killing!

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/09/2016 23:02

I am going to have nightmares after reading this thread.

What if the dd had actually like it?
Don't get the horror about dolls Confused
Really want to watch that film though.

avamiah · 27/09/2016 23:23

My little one is 6 and has 3 of those "real life looking dolls', all sitting in a tent she has made for them in her room.
They are the weirdest looking dolls i have seen but she loves them and always talks to them.[Grin,
I say bring back Barbie, good old reliable Barbie. haha

VioletBam · 28/09/2016 01:42

My DD is 12 and collects old dolls. I love them too.

She has a sampler on her wall which says "Dolls are not creepy. People are."

Which I think sums it up.

WetsTheFinger · 28/09/2016 02:49

Hmmm I'm still gonna stick with my motto of 'dolls are creepy as fuck' but thanks all the same.

MozarellaCheese · 28/09/2016 06:25

Yes, but will you be embroidering that on your sampler WetsTheFinger?

Not a big fan of dolls here either.

MozarellaCheese · 28/09/2016 06:26

Loving some of the pics here though!

BeverlyGoldberg · 28/09/2016 06:29

YABU. The words didn't pop out of your mouth, unless you're three years old or you have behavioural issues. I bet they were really excited about giving it to you and you've really offended them.

yeOldeTrout · 28/09/2016 06:48

(another one pmsl) DD has some of these type of dolls. I've never like dolls so dont' get it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/09/2016 06:58

When I was a kid my dad had a wax head from my grandfathers barbers shop. My dad used to fit out shops often in London. He'd hang the head from a noose and put clothes on it to scare passes by. When I was in my early teens, he brought a naked shop dummy home and put it behind the door in the outside loo to give the guests a fright if they needed to go when outside in the garden. I sometimes forgot and had a fright myself but I had lots of fun playing tricks on my friends too. Grin

Milzilla · 28/09/2016 07:14

Annabelle says hi!

Moojay · 28/09/2016 07:35

When I was a kid, my god-mother showed me her special doll, called Suzy.
Bald, burnt looking head, scary blue eyes, faded colour and the lips. Oh god the lips on it.
Anyway, dgm told me that I could come over to play with Suzy the next day. She'd said a time like around 11 pr something. I was terrified and trying to think up an excuse for the next day not to go.
Then, that night for some reason the dolls evil curse I got out of bed, got dressed and went into my mums bedroom to tell her I was going to dgm house only to be told off for mucking about and to get back into bed. It was 3am. 😐
Do not take that doll OP. I swear to god they are all manufactured by demons that put evil dark curses in the dolls where hearts should go. Much like the build a bear when they put little silk hearts in the bears.

liz70 · 28/09/2016 07:43

People were much more sensible in the olden days. No nonsense talk of creepy dolls then.

To have said out loud that the doll was hideous
originalmavis · 28/09/2016 08:19

That's probably not a doll. Gave you seen any Victorian death portraits? Eeeeeeeeeek!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 28/09/2016 08:26

I agree, of course you meant to offend.

Carrados · 28/09/2016 08:29

YANBU. Not rude.

I think lying to protect someone's feelings is a more awful thing to do. Also the way your MIL was referring to it is a bit Hmm. Reminds me of when my Dsis and BIL were trying for children, it took a while for her to conceive and in the meantime they carried a troop of cuddly toys around with them and called them their babies and talked/treated them as such. I didn't say anything until she gave me one to have as my 'baby'. She started counselling soon after.
