to tell DD to fuck off and leave me the hell alone?

SaggyBaggyPuss · 23/09/2016 21:45

I smoke in the garden in the evenings filthy bastard that I am and now DD smokes too she keeps following me out there to talk at me Angry. She has just given me a lengthy run down on some make up endorsed by the bloody Kardashians wondering if she should buy some and then had a rant about how crap it probably was Angry.

My evening smoke-s- are my ME time (4 DC). Time to think things over and have pretend conversations in my head with people who have pissed me off, or fantasise about actually having a life. I try to 'hmmm' and 'OK' at appropriate times to pretend I'm listening to her which she has now caught onto but she still won't bugger off.

She's 19 btw.

AIBU to tell her to go out for a fag at different times to me (she won't because she's scared of the bats flying around) or ban her from smoking at all in the garden?

MaddyHatter "tinky" is short for tinker, in other words the charmer who used the word was calling the OP a gypsy, cos shock fucking horror she smokes.

Fwiw, I'm with you OP, my 5 trips out to the garden at night for a fag are my time, I don't want to have to engage with anyone.

Therealloislane · 23/09/2016 22:48

I get you op.

I've just thrown my teenagers out of my room. But prior to their ejection I found out ds fancies the girl he sits beside in Science, but the girl he sits beside in French fancies him. Dd touched a boy's butt (by mistake, she'd rather touch a girl's on purpose) & that they both prefer their daddy to me....

So I got to hear all the craic, give them a 5 minute warning then told them to feck off! Grin

Can you do similar to Dd?

HelenaDove · 23/09/2016 22:48

I smoked for about five years between 27 and 32.

Whenever i smell cigarette smoke it reminds me of good times but i can be a bit anal about it if it drifts into our flat due to DHs COPD.

MaddyHatter · 23/09/2016 22:49

my parents gave up smoking when i was 2.

both me and my brother smoked.. well, he now vapes.

ShouldHaveBeenJess · 23/09/2016 22:50

derek. Neither of mine did, either (neither, either - sounds weird). But I puffed like a trooper until late last year (and even now, I replace the e cig with the real stuff as a 'treat')

Ptarmigandancinginthegloaming · 23/09/2016 22:53

The wanting some time alone can be done some other way tho surely?

I used to just tell my kids (once they were old enough to play by themselves for half an hour or so) I was going to my room for a short rest coz I was tired, and they were only allowed to come in if it was really urgent. Then I went and had a break, dozed or read for 15 mins.
Could u try something similar? It does seem harsh to ban her from following you into the garden.

ayeokthen · 23/09/2016 22:54

Literally nobody in my family smokes, I started because in my first job you only got a break if you smoked!

Hullygully · 23/09/2016 22:55

I think the Kardashians are fascinating. YABU

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 23/09/2016 22:55

Wow lots of personal attacks on the OP with a bit of casual racism thrown in. Is that 'classy'?

user1474638369 · 23/09/2016 22:57

Ayeokthen - what job was that?

wherethewildthingis · 23/09/2016 22:57

Dont get it. How can you look at your child smoking and feel anything other than sad? You know if she carries on there is a 50% chance it will cause her (nasty, painful, early) death? Smoking is rank and awful. I don't get the idea of a lighthearted thread about it.
Would you make a joke about her using heroin or playing in traffic?

God I feel bloody humourless about MN at the moment

ImperialBlether · 23/09/2016 22:57

If she wouldn't go out for a fag if you didn't, why don't you stop? I find it really hard to think of my daughter smoking (she does occasionally) - I'd do anything to stop her.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 23/09/2016 22:57

And I'm an ex smoker and hate the Kardashians! OP isn't pinning her DD down and forcing her to smoke - some teens take it up of their own accord Shock

DerekSprechenZeDick · 23/09/2016 23:01

Smoking is now been likened to heroin and been run over

How many parents here have had alcohol with their adult children?

ayeokthen · 23/09/2016 23:01

user1474638369 agency hospitality 20 years ago, cash in hand £1.50 an hour, ridiculous shifts and no breaks unless you needed a fag. Stadiums and racecourses mostly.

WorraLiberty · 23/09/2016 23:01

You can ignore your kids coz you want some prosecco in peace but mention having one cig and you are the worst human

This ^^ from Derek Grin

I don't smoke, OP but I get you like your alone time.

I was trying to listen to some music the other night and chill out, yet my DS(17) chose that moment to talk (at me, not to me) about everything from politics to how he needs to buy a new guitar string.

He then went on to tell me exactly how to replace said guitar string and how to tune it up Confused

I just smiled, nodded and gritted my teeth, knowing that when he goes off to Uni next year, I'll miss his inane chitchat probably Grin

ShouldHaveBeenJess · 23/09/2016 23:03

Ah, Livia, it's AIBU. You smoke, you're the spawn of the devil. Your daughter smokes and you're the devil incarnate. Judgemental, rude and flaming bloody ignorant comments are par for the course.

I might have filthy personal habits but I'm not unkind or cruel. And I'm ok with that.

user1474638369 · 23/09/2016 23:04

Ayeokthen - you must have needed a lot of fags. How did you afford them on £1.50/hour?

ayeokthen · 23/09/2016 23:06

Because it was 14 hour shifts and in 1996 20 fags were £2 ish a pack.

ayeokthen · 23/09/2016 23:06

And I was still living at home, since I was only 16!

user1474638369 · 23/09/2016 23:07

SHBJ -well said

wherethewildthingis · 23/09/2016 23:07

Derek - alcohol doesn't kill 50% of its users. Smoking is not some kind of
lovely benign pleasurable thing.

TotallyOuting · 23/09/2016 23:07

I wonder whether the people who think smoking is rough as fuck in the UK are more accepting of it in other countries where it is still very much the norm?

And 'tinky' is a new one for me. Agree that such racism is the most unpleasant thing on this thread. Not some adults who smoke, ffs.

LumpyMcBentface · 23/09/2016 23:09

wherethewildthingis

Pretty sure alcohol kills more people than smoking or hard drugs. Weirdly it's more socially acceptable. Go figure.

wherethewildthingis · 23/09/2016 23:10

Nope alcohol most definitely does not kill more people than smoking. A few minutes on google will clear that up for you
