"Let's clear something up right off the bat: I am trans. The reason this seems like a proclamation worth making is that, to the untrained eye, I may seem like your everyday New York City cisgender gay guy. I haven't had any hormones or facial electrolysis, and I don't have any boobs. But make no mistake: I am trans. I wear basically all women's clothing, makeup, and hairdos and I identify as a gender-fluid trans person"

So he is a man. He looks like a man, presents as a man, calls himself Nicholas, and does not refer to himself as a woman but he is upset that he was not allowed to change in the women's rooms despite being told that there were currently young girls in the room.

I'd love to know how the actual trans community of people who have gender dysmorphia and are going through incredibly painful physicals X emotional treatment in order to pass as the other gender feel about people like this who think they can slap a dress on and understand their struggle.

From what I know, they are shouted down by the TAs too. There was the actual word used to describe them posted by a poster 'AGuyCalledHelen' I think it was...but transpeople who do not go along with all this bollocks have their own TERF style label...

venusinscorpio · 21/09/2016 20:21

Truscum, I think.

venusinscorpio · 21/09/2016 20:22

Unfortunately the narcissistic special snowflakes in the trans movement shout a lot louder. And bully everyone who doesn't agree.

venusinscorpio · 21/09/2016 20:31

And that result is the natural end point for genuine trans people as well as women. That they are cowed into submission while shouty "non binary" attention seekers appropriate all the rights and sympathy that they should receive for being genuinely discriminated against. How are "non binary" people actually discriminated against in the workplace or in public spaces for example? By not being allowed to use whichever sex segregated facilities they feel like using at any given moment in time? If they fit under the trans umbrella that makes a mockery of it.

WankingMonkey · 21/09/2016 20:34

Anyway, just spent bloody ages reading this long article and trying to understand

everydayfeminism.com/2016/08/transgender-101/

Its actually well worth a read.

My conclusion is..this person believes not following gender stereotypes means one is trans. Thats all there is to it. No gender dysphoria, not necessarily. Just doing things meant for 'girls or 'boys'. So, I am even more confused as surely someone who doesn't follow gender stereotypes is just that...a person who doesn't conform to societal 'norms'. or if we must put a special snowflake label on it...gender non-binary. NOT trans? And if it really is just about not following gender stereotypes, why the fuss about SEX segregated areas of peoples lives?

Mavis
Can I 'identify as' a polar bear since I am very pale and love the snow and occasionally feel the urge to rip someone's head off?

Blimey, Mavis! Are you my twin separated at birth?

FloraFox · 21/09/2016 21:10

To those people saying "separate cubicles - simples", it's not that simple. Lots of women and girls come out of their cubicles half dressed to show their friends (or mums) what they are wearing or to ask for another size. If you're trying on a bra, a fitting assistant might be coming in and out of your cubicle. Why on earth would changing rooms be separated by gender rather than sex? That makes absolutely no sense.

2kids2dogsnosense · 21/09/2016 21:11

Very well said, Manatee

WankingMonkey everydayfeminism is a tedious snake-oil site, whose main purpose is to make you feel shit about yourself so that you can buy one of their expensive courses to make yourself into a better person.

If you want a laugh, go look at the Everyday Obedience twitter account, @everydayobey . It's Everyday Feminism to a T.

WankingMonkey · 21/09/2016 21:48

First time I came across that site today and all I have read on it is that article Grin

aeon.co/essays/the-idea-that-gender-is-a-spectrum-is-a-new-gender-prison

I feel this fits in very well on this thread. It is long though but honestly, if any of this gender-fluid and such confuses or interests you in any way, it is well worth a read. A fantastic piece. I genuinely hope people do read it.

noeffingidea · 21/09/2016 22:28

flora thats not really an excuse not to have individual cubicles. You can take someone in with you, or take more than one size.
I've used them in Peacocks, they are great, and feel very secure. Much safer in fact than some other changing rooms, where the cubicles only have curtains and anyone can walk in.

chinlo · 21/09/2016 22:44

In shops that don't sell bras, there's really no need to come out of the cubicle half dressed. If you want to show a family member or friend an outfit, you would be dressed in that outfit, surely?

I know it works because lots of shops do it.

Lorelei76 · 21/09/2016 23:10

Wanking ".this person believes not following gender stereotypes means one is trans. "

That's bizarre. On that basis all my friends are trans!

I'm a scrimp and save person but I will look there next time I need something because they've dealt with this well.

So part of his basis for using the woman'a changing room is that he dresses entirely in 'women's clothes'? I can see what he means - black assymetric leather leotards and lace see through blouses with shorts and chandelier headressss are an essential part of every woman's wardrobe. He fits right in! Usher him into the women's changing room forthwith...

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 21/09/2016 23:39

What happens when a women is stuck in a dress frantically inflating with the panic of being stranded with broke/ caught zipper and the thought of being evacuated from dress by scissors by staff

That happened to me in Brora (the shop , not the place) stupid silk dress with a thin silk lining which got caught in the teeth of the zip. The assistant had to cut the dress to get me our of it. Apparently I was the third person to get stuck.

For a relatively upmarket shop Brora has useless curtained changing room direct off the main shop floor.

Hobbs and Cos are the best- always apart from the main sales area, full floor to ceiling lockable doors and a second moveable mirror so you get a back view.

FloraFox · 21/09/2016 23:58

noeffing I'm not saying don't have single cubicles, I'm saying that doesn't mean men should be using the same set. I took my DD to UO for her first bra, there's no reason why she should be concerned there might be a man outside if she needs to open the door for help.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 22/09/2016 00:21

Cos in Regent Street have male and female assistants.

The changing rooms are great, completely enclosed lockable cubicles set back from the sales floor with assistants before you go into them. The assistants however can be male or female. If you open the door to ask for help there may well be a male assistant there.

I didn't find it a problem - If I needed help from an assistant I would cover up to the level I was comfortable. I wouldn't come out of a changing room in just my underwear even if everyone there were female. I asked one of the male assistants to do up a back zip I couldn't reach (and to get me a bigger size)

Lorelei76 · 22/09/2016 00:46

I don't wear dresses
Because someone said "inflating" with panic, I now have a mental image of someone in a silk dress with a stiuck zipper, getting bigger and rounder and then drifting over New Bond Street like a balloon.

In fairness I can imagine getting stuck in a dress would be scary!

Major digression, sorry. As you were....

Lass OMG! You actually had to be chopped out, poor thing!

Thanks ! The assistant was lovely, reassured me I wasn't the first and it was a bloody stupid design fault. There was no suggestion I had to pay for the damage.
