To ask what expensive thing you have which you think was well worth the cost?

I got my bugaboo out of the garage today. It's nearly ten years old and I'm giving it to my sister for her baby. I can't believe what good nick it's in. Everything fabric wise can be washed, I've ordered one new wheel and tilt buttons because they were a bit dodgy but everything else is perfect. I've also ordered a new mattress obviously. I think it's fab that you can go on the bugaboo site and order parts for something nearly a decade old.

What do you have that was expensive but so so worth it.

Mayonaise, bread, soup, puddings

So if I have a slow cooker and a breadmaker (outlay thirty quid tops second hand) already, and I'm not fussed about mayonnaise, I might as well save myself the cash...

lifeistooshort · 13/09/2016 11:34

My little car. It is hybrid and automatic which makes a huge difference to my tiring stop start commute compared to the tractor I had before. Each time it does on electric and I hear the wooshing sound, it makes me smile

Yes, and if you bought a pile of logs and dug a hole in the garden, you could save yourself the cost of an oven...

It's labour-saving and convenience. Some people think it has been well worth the cost. I'm guessing those are time-poor, cash-rich people who want lovely home made foods, but don't have all the time to prep and make them

MarchEliza2 · 13/09/2016 13:26

Yes @ Sparechange - exactly.

Also, with a newborn I appreciated being able to set something to cook and not have to worry about burning or boiling over (or burning the house down) when the inevitable distraction occurred. Saved us living on ready meals for a few months.

People asking about Thermomixes / I don't have one but my SIL does and it's bloody brilliant. It's extremely faff-free - you enter the number of the recipe you want to do, from the accompanying recipe book, and then the machine display takes you through the steps. It weighs (and tares) everything and then chops/mixes/cooks/blends as appropriate. My SIL makes all kinds of soups, sauces (pesto, bolognaise, mayo, bechamel etc), biscuit, cake and bread mixes, smoothies, ice cream...if I had the money I'd get one and have no doubt I'd use it every day. I guess it's the convenience that you pay for, as well as the function and relatively small footprint.

DD is 4 and has ASD. We received no help from the Local Authority or the NHS (apart from vague promises of a few SALT sessions).

We self fund her Early Intervention therapy (well into 4 digits per month) and it's by far the best money we have ever spent!

For those with the Dualit toaster, does it have to be the pricier end, or is this kind www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003MVYQW2/ good too?

Paddingtonthebear · 13/09/2016 20:34

We've got a duality toaster. I don't think it's any better than the almost identical looking one we had before from John Lewis

sparechange · 13/09/2016 21:14

repent
It has to be the proper mechanical one
Those ones are just glorified normal toasters with too many bits to go wrong
I mistakenly bought one and the 'cancel' button broke very soon. Where as the classic Dualit one at work had been going strong for years and years of heavy use because it is much sturdier and has proper engineering

almondfinger · 13/09/2016 21:32

My Tiffany Bone bracelet given to me my DH on our 2nd anniversary. I love, love, love it.
My Tag (also DH, back in 2000) worn every day since and worth the investment.
I bought myself a Belstaff jacket last Autumn, it's fab. Put it on for the first time today and it's a beauty.
My new house. The most expensive of the lot. I'm overseeing the build. At the weekend we brought friends to see it and one said 'It will be the nicest house in 'our city' for a very long time. It will be; it's gorgeous and gives me many sleepless nights.

RepentAtLeisure · 13/09/2016 21:41

Ah, okay thank you SpareChange - no cutting corners then!

ginorwine · 13/09/2016 21:53

My lovely little dog
Art - range from a picture done by a member of a learning disability collective for £16 to a few hundred ,
The view from our house which gives daily joy
4 years of following birth of dc 2 - had two under two - expensive but had no car ,- had to sell it - few choices to buy anything at all but the time was worth it .
My very old and very small camper van - independence .

StarJumpAlertTakeCover · 14/09/2016 00:53

I must say I feel a bit like the little match girl reading this thread although I do have a very old roomba bought with wedding gift vouchers.

Also a bugaboo, done us through 3 children amazingly well, no replacement bits required. hidden in the loft in case I can blag DH in to just one more baby

AGenie · 14/09/2016 02:38

My DSLR camera. It allows me to still play at being a scientist even thought I'm now a SAHM, and the results I get are good enough that I can go and visit my still-scientist friends and have something to say, and something to publish once in a while. Makes me feel like me, still.

user1466690252 · 14/09/2016 02:45

Does the lumea hurt?

tighterthanscrooge · 14/09/2016 04:29

Silver cross cots for the DDs absolutely beautiful
Tefal actifry I use it everyday for all sorts of quick delicious meals
My degree I had a brilliant time at uni and made the best friends I've ever had

CoolCarrie · 14/09/2016 04:30

I didnt feel that it hurt just a bit uncomfortable and the flashing as the Lumea 'fires' a shot on the hair root could give you a headache, so I always look away. You need to charge it up first, then place it on the skin, there is a light at the back and when it lights up, the machine is ready to 'fire'. So you press the button and then the part pressed against the skin flashes.

You need to shave or use an epliator first as the machine works on the roots. I use a white nail pencil to mark off the areas treated, especially on legs because it can be hard to keep track.
It really seems to work, I haven't had to shave my armpits for nearly 3 weeks since last using it and there is no shadow either.
It is totally worth every penny, between that and the epliator they have made a huge difference to this hairy mary! ( haven't used on face yet )

So this is a bit long but I honestly feel that it's brilliant, and wish I had bought one years ago.

Bean-to-cup coffee machine

MangoMoon · 14/09/2016 08:52

CoolCarrie, I am definitely coveting a Lumea now off the back of this thread!

I got an epilator a couple of years ago & wish I'd got it 20 years ago - but the Lumea sounds like a great idea to use alongside.

I've too much other stuff that's way more important that I'm having to save up for a the mo, but a Lumea is defo on my list for when I can afford one!

ihatethecold · 14/09/2016 10:11

almondfinger
How lovely building your own house.
In between the stress of it you must be very excited?

Arkengarthdale · 14/09/2016 12:01

My DH says me! He also says I'm worth every penny Wink

MangoMoon · 14/09/2016 12:11

To anyone contemplating a Roomba - at this exact moment I'm hoovering the whole of downstairs whilst sitting in the garden with a coffee, fannying around on my phone.
Priceless!!

Butkin · 14/09/2016 12:30

Our Shiba Inu dog - 16 in a couple of weeks. What pleasure he's given us
Oakley horsebox - we are loving it's reliability
iphone - so pleased I went for the plus, use it constantly and would have to replace it immediately.
DD's education

Carriemac · 14/09/2016 15:03
