How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

Bedding sounds reasonable? Depends if you care about the Turin Shroud look.

sianihedgehog · 01/09/2016 21:36

I am pretty sure I'm just grubbier than you, OP, but I work full time outside the home, as does DP, and we have a one year old who sleeps a maximum of 9 hours in 24. There's no way in hell I could clean the bathroom every day! I rinse the bath after every use, and don't use loads of products in it, and I wipe the floor and surfaces with dirty towels before they go in the wash. I give the toilet a scrub and a wipe when I notice it looks dirty, and I clean the bath and sink when they look dirty and I have 15 minutes without the baby so I can use cleaning products safely.

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:36

dontcallmethatyoucunt - and what's that got to do with how often you clean your bathroom?! Pointless fucking post!

once a week?

every other week more like.
not making much mess in the first place certainly help. and giving the sink a quick swish with a flannel after washing.

DesolateWaist · 01/09/2016 21:37

Am I the only one put off by how much bleach you're all dumping into the water / sewage system ? Seems totally over the top, you don't drink the water out of there you know!

Nope, me too. Unless there is illness or a serious poo incident I only put bleach down once a week, (and then it's not actually me, it's the cleaner). I'm not going to touch the inside of my loo or, as you say, drink the water. The germs aren't going to climb out and up my bum.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 01/09/2016 21:37

I'm baffled how anyone has the time (or inclination!) to clean their bathroom(s) on a daily basis Confused

I like things to be a bit mucky before I clean or it feels a bit pointless. For any sense of satisfaction I need to be able to see a difference after I've cleaned!

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 21:37

I don't understand people who say their baths are not scummy ; I have a daily bath and DH has a shower (over the bath) and if I run my hands around the bath, where the water line would end, it's scummy. The bath is white so it doesn't show or look dirty, but the surface holds onto soap scum and I assume some dead skin scales too. I also notice that hair conditioner, used in the over the bath shower, leaves a lot of slippery residue on the bottom of the bath. A swish removes some of it, but not all.

I spray the bath and clean it every other day, same for the wash basin, then mop the floor weekly . Loo gets a good clean weekly but it's mainly just me using it as we have 3 loos in the house and DH doesn't use the en suite much.

Myusernameismyusername · 01/09/2016 21:37

No way could I wash the towels every six weeks but each to their own!

DesolateWaist · 01/09/2016 21:39

Sorry but I think a post pointing out that people live on rubbish dumps is very reasonable. You are getting your knickers in a twist over a bit of harmless dirt when some people live amongst dirt all day long.

CadburyChocolateCrunchie · 01/09/2016 21:39

Not joking about bedding/towels. I can't see the point tbh. I have a shower, get clean, dry my clean body on the towel.

Bedding.. I shower every morning. Does it matter if I sleep amongst a few dead skin cells?

user1471552005 · 01/09/2016 21:39

No scum here but I live in a soft water area. I take a quick wipe around most days, squirt bleach down the loo, wipe the sink etc. Whole bathroom gets a deep clean only once every 10 days or so.

malin100 · 01/09/2016 21:39

From living in a few different houses and areas, I'd say it's to do with whether your water is hard or soft and what your bathroom suite is made of. Don't know what my current one is but the sink and toilet (there when we moved in) get dirty unreasonably quickly compared to others I've had (and compared to my bath which we replaced ourselves). Everything 'sticks' - toothpaste, limescale, soapy water - and discolours it really quickly with 'scum' type stuff.

I still don't clean it every day though Blush

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 21:40

Posters saying they don't have time- this is an excuse! I spray round the bath ( 30 seconds at most), leave it to work, (use Mr Muscle or Cif) while I'm cleaning my teeth or in between putting my make up on (this is called multi tasking) and 2 minutes later get the shower hose and a J cloth, whizz round the bath, whoosh the shower hose over it all - job done in 4 minutes.

WhatamessIgotinto · 01/09/2016 21:41

Blimey OP you must be a right grubby lot in your house! Quick wipe round the toilet and sink, bleach down the lav daily. Proper clean once a week.

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:42

How am I getting knickers in a twist - genuine question which as per usual on MN always gets some funny fuckers come along! just interested to know Confused

mrshwl · 01/09/2016 21:42

Are you pipes draining properly? Our bath looks dirty much quicker if our pipes are a bit blocked so the water takes longer to drain. Once they drain better/quicker, then the bath/sink looks cleaner for longer.

We never do ours more than once a week, it does need it by then though, we just ignore it until we have time to do it.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 01/09/2016 21:42

Because you're clearly over concerned about harmless mess. I'm just pointing out that you are over concerned about shit that, in the grand scheme of life, doesn't matter. A bit of scum saves the planet and your kids immune systems.

Save the time, play with your kids, get a fucking grip.

Your not seeing things my way, but it doesn't make my post pointless. It shows you are totally missing the point.

AGenie · 01/09/2016 21:42

Is your bathroom maybe not very well ventilated? If it's sitting damp then it would get grubby much more quickly. My bathroom and toilet are in separate rooms, both with large windows (about a foot squared) that we keep open all the time. The rooms are really still very clean at the end of a week. There are only three of us in the house and we are all quite clean people (not coal miners or professional gardeners or whathaveyou).

Artandco · 01/09/2016 21:43

No.

But those saying bath etc is scummy, don't you rinse the bath as soon as the water empties? That prevents the scum and is literally 10 seconds with the bath shower hose thing.

Sink scum, surely everyone who spits toothpaste should rinse straight away. Even a 2 year old can do that

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 21:43

You wash your towels every 6 weeks ! Jeez, I've heard it all now. Don't you realise that moulds and bacteria grow on wet towels? It doesn't matter how clean you think you are after a shower, you're still covered in bacteria- some harmless, some not so harmless. Most people surely wash towels weekly or even twice a week. Why do you think they change them in posh hotels daily?

Funko · 01/09/2016 21:44

What I do is watch many episodes of 'obsessive compulsive cleaners' then I glance around at my unhoovered, undusted, 2 week since last clean bathroom home and realise I'm not that bad and settles down to watch Netflix Grin

DesolateWaist · 01/09/2016 21:44

I haven't cleaned my bathroom in a week.
Who dares me to go and take photos right now?
See how 'scummy' it is.
I've not actually used it since this morning so I've go no idea of the state of it.

Eolian · 01/09/2016 21:44

I don't understand the bafflement. It's not that people have magical bathrooms that stay clean longer than yours, OP. It's that some people are very fussy simply have higher standards of cleanliness than others. The rest of us actually don't feel the need for everything to be sparkling clean absolutely all the time. A bit of soap scum? Who cares!
I have friends who have pristine houses. Would I like mine to look like that? Well yes, but I don't want it enough to spend my whole bloody time cleaning! I clean my bathroom once a week. If it gets a bit grubby in between, tough.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 01/09/2016 21:44

*you're even!

DailyFailAteMyFish · 01/09/2016 21:45

My cleaner cleans it (once a week haha).
I dance away merrily.
I do clean up lots of small boy pee and spilled toothpaste in the interim.
