How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

Maybe they just have better things to do/ can't be bothered. I clean our bathrooms every other day but wish I didn't....,.

Hulababy · 01/09/2016 21:12

I only do a proper clean once a week.

Most days I use a cleaning wipe or two to skim round the sink and the toilet seat. Takes 30 seconds.
Shower is supposed to have a quick squirt with a shower spray after use, though it doesn't always get it.

UmbongoUnchained · 01/09/2016 21:12

When i come out dirtier than I went in then I'll give it a clean.

CheeseFlavouredDiscs · 01/09/2016 21:12

Keep the toilet cleaner next to the loo brush, and add a squirt every so often.

Use the wet towels to wipe the water and dust off the bathroom floor before throwing in the wash. I use the hand towels for polishing the taps and sink, etc before chucking in the wash.

Keep shower spray in the shower and spray everything whilst your conditioner is in your hair for the 2-3 minutes. I turn the water off to do this, and then it all washes off whilst you rinse off the conditioner.

Keep a pack of general purpose or bathroom wipes handy for mucky surfaces.

That covers most of it! We deep clean about once a fortnight.

Moanranger · 01/09/2016 21:12

Every fortnight for me! I've never noticed any scum, where would that be? A little brush of the loo when it's needed & then full clean every two weeks. It neither looks or smells bad, just a bit messy by day 13. My DP has his own tho; no idea what he does, I rarely go in it.

RabbitSaysWoof · 01/09/2016 21:12

I don't feel my bathroom is dirty between cleans. I have cistern blocks which slow releases toilet cleaner in every flush.
There's not really even any dust after a week.
Only two people in my house tho.

SouthDownsSunshine · 01/09/2016 21:12

Seriously? Our bathroom really does not get that dirty. I feel like I'm doing something wrong for not making more of a mess!

SavoyCabbage · 01/09/2016 21:12

How dirty they are will depend on how many people are using them and how often as well as how messy you are when you are using them.

I remember people talking about scum on TV adverts when I was growing up. I don't really know what it is though so I don't know if my scum is an issue or not.

Lelloteddy · 01/09/2016 21:12

How do you accumulate so much 'scum' in your bathroom OP?

Everyone in this house rinses the sink properly after teeth brushing, hand washing etc.
Anyone who sprinkles on the loo seat wipes it up themselves. I have a glass cleaner scrapy thing in the shower that I use for 30 seconds each morning on the inside of the shower door.

I whizz bleach round the loos before bed at night and give the whole thing a proper scrub once a week.

Nobody has died yet Wink

honeylulu · 01/09/2016 21:13

We do a full/proper clean once a fortnight (well our cleaners do). The rest is daily maintenance. Quick scrub round the bath after use to remove any marks. Likewise shower and basin. Toilet gets a wipe round cistern and seat when it looks dusty etc likewise shelves. Toilet bowl gets a squirt of bleach and a once over with the brush (disposable heads) when it is marked. (Each family member is responsible for removing their own stains!) Bin emptied when getting full. Whizz over the floor with a floor wipe when it looks a bit dusty. Those tasks take a few seconds each and are done as when needed so it never looks awful.

museumum · 01/09/2016 21:13

Are you a family of six who play rugby daily?
We are two adults one toddler and our bathroom gets a full clean only fortnightly with the toilet and sink wiped weekly.

Hassled · 01/09/2016 21:13

Once a week is pushing it here - probably once every 5 or so days. If that falls on a work day then it's a fairly cursory wipe of the sink and loo and toothpaste splatters on the floor.

NancyJoan · 01/09/2016 21:14

Not done mine for two weeks, at least. Floor's a bit dusty, don't really care. It will get done. (I swoosh bleach around the loo everyday, DS Flash wipes the loo is he wees on it.

RatOnnaStick · 01/09/2016 21:15

Most I do in the week is chuck harpic down the loo, wipe the seat and surround while the boys are in the bath and swish the bath out once empty. Cba to do.more than that.

annandale · 01/09/2016 21:15

Bathroom gets a proper clean about every three weeks or thereabouts Wasn't doing anything else but have got sick of it and now do the toilet and surrounding floor every day.

The answer is, our bathroom is absolutely MINGING. I'm sure yours isn't.

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:16

There's me, my DH and a 3 year old and a 11 month old. DH and I shower everyday and DC's bath every evening. By scum I mean, sink scum from brushing teeth and washing dirty hands throughout the day - toilet scum from generally people using the toilet all day everyday! - and bath scum from 4 people using it everyday particularly the DC's. I'm just curious I would love to cut down my cleaning as I work PT and have full run of the house but the bathroom thing baffles me!

Do you work down the pit?

booklooker · 01/09/2016 21:17

the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic

I think you have a bad case of 'scum bum'. It is not that unusual within the MNer community and is often cured by taking a large grip

Laineymc7 · 01/09/2016 21:18

I bleach toilet everyday and use antibac wipes on it. I spray everyday shower spray in shower afterwards so only bathroom only really needs proper clean once a week.

JaceLancs · 01/09/2016 21:18

Just self and DS here we both have separate bathrooms and are out at work all day - sometimes I go to gym on way home from work and shower there
If I've been working away a few nights I can easily manage 2 weeks without cleaning bathroom

Myusernameismyusername · 01/09/2016 21:21

My bath gets disgusting. There's 3 girls in my house. I don't clean it every day exactly but when I look at it and think 'ew' or someone wants to use the bath they usually clean it first

mrsm43s · 01/09/2016 21:21

Stick on cleaner in the loo, replaced as necessary.
Scrub the pan immediately if shitty.
Rinse any scum/debris down the sink as using
Rinse/spray (the leave on spray that removes scale) the bath/shower after every use.

Actually fully clean the bathroom only maybe every 3 weeks, maybe longer. I mean it's only mopping the floor and the outside/pedestal of loo/sink, as all the rest is already clean.

All good, still alive.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/09/2016 21:22

I expect it's partly to do if you have hard or soft water.

OP you'd be horrified by my shower atm - it looks grim because of the hard water in the area. I'm going to bleach it tomorrow (I can bleach it with no ill effects at 37 weeks pregnant can't i?) but I only clean my bathroom once a week unless we're having guests and I'll do it before they come round.
