my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!

my daughter (14) has been trying to persuade me for months and months for me to buy her a brand new wardrobe as hers is "too small" "doesn't go with her room" or whatever and I completely understand why she'd want one. at first, I was reluctant but offered £45 towards a second hand one if she could find anything half decent, but she now wants a brand new one from ikea that is over £100. she has saved up the other money for it herself (she has a job) and i don't know if i'm being mean or not when i told her that I won't drive fifty plus miles all the way to ikea for a brand new wardrobe in the middle of the year. it isn't her birthday, it isn't christmas, it's a big long excursion for one very expensive item she just happens to want. am i being unreasonable??? pls help!!!

Don't be so bloody miserable. Pay the £35 delivery and have them delivered. She's done brilliantly saving up for them

teacher54321 · 16/08/2016 19:15

Fair enough. I didn't mean to sound like a total princess, had the OP come on and said 'I don't have the money for petrol and can't possibly afford to take her' I would never have commented. It was made the in context of her sounding like she couldn't be bothered, even though her daughter had tried so hard to save the money.

Bettybooop25 · 16/08/2016 19:17

teacher54321 Yes sorry it's probably me. I've got too caught up in the thread and forgot what the original post said.

madmother1 · 16/08/2016 19:19

Blimey I've just shelled out £1k for a complete bedroom make over with a new ikea bed to match all the rest of my DD furniture. I would never have expected her to buy it. I look at it as an investment to the way the room looks. You may find you need a big car to collect. DH and I had to take two cars for just the bed and a few bits as you can't have a passenger in the car with long lengths of wood. I'd go for delivery too.

Now hang on, we can't have people being reasonable to each other.

This is AIBU , not chat!

If my 14 year old saved up half the money for a wardrobe I would gladly drive him to ikea and pay for the wardrobe himself and insist that he spends his saved money on something he wants rather than something he needs. I would also buy him cake in the ikea cafe and spend the next 452,362 hours helping him assemble the wardrobe if required.
It won't be something that I ever need to do though because my 14 year old spends all his money in Hmv and the game shop. I wish my 14 year old would even offer to spend his hard earned cash on something essential.

Summerholsdoingmyheadin · 16/08/2016 19:22

Pay for the wardrobe myself

Bah! Yet another AIBU thread destroyed by people being entirely too reasonable and forgiving each other too easily.

Chippednailvarnishing · 16/08/2016 19:27

Have a cake Annie, it will help you get over the shock.

Pay for the wardrobe myself

That would sort it for the OP. Wink

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 16/08/2016 19:30

Thanks Chipped. Is this time time when I start wishing for the "good old days of MN" when bunfights were common and the vipers were plenty?

NotYoda · 16/08/2016 19:30

Chipped

Ackchewly, I find cupcakes a little too sweet for my taste

Lweji · 16/08/2016 19:32

Cupcake fights are definitely not the same.

Chippednailvarnishing · 16/08/2016 19:34

Sneaks in a bun or two, passes them round and considers mentioning benefits/vaccinations/Peter Andre...

LittleBearPad · 16/08/2016 19:35

I'd drive 50 miles for meatballs and Daim cake.

Bettybooop25 · 16/08/2016 19:38

Well this has certainly taken a turn.

ShatnersBassoon · 16/08/2016 19:42

No cupcake for me, please. They make me panic when the icing clogs up the roof of my mouth. I'll have a massive bag of Daims instead.

Lweji · 16/08/2016 19:44

I love proper butter icing.
I'll grab a spoon, you can have the cake.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 16/08/2016 19:44

What. The. Fuck?

my daughter wants a new wardrobe...50 mile ikea drive???!!
teacher54321 · 16/08/2016 19:44

Mmmmmm daim bars

Was1969 · 16/08/2016 19:47

YABU, who expects there kids to pay for there own furniture? If she needs it and has clearly worked very hard to pay towards it I can't see your problem in at least driving to collect it.

MotherOfGlob · 16/08/2016 19:49

I would travel 50 miles for this cake-wardrobe.
