At the beach today with ds. It's fairly busy, lots of kids running around.
I am surrounded by people smoking. 2 people behind me are smoking and a woman in front of me. Plus a group of people just down the beach a bit who are all Smoking. It stinks.
I know it's an open space so they are entitled I suppose but it's horrible and there are kids running around etc. You can't help but smell it etc!
Just wish beaches were smoke free zones. Plus all of them are putting the cigarette ends in the sand!

That is precisely no consolation if the smoker is next to you, particularly if the wind is coming in your direction.

I'm not a smoker and I don't particularly like it near me but it is legal in the open air, so while you're not being BU not to like it, it's just 'one of those annoying things that other people do' - of which there are many. I hate dogs running up to me and whiffling at my bare legs in shorts, people spitting in the street, hot food fumes in the cinema. It's just life I'm afraid.

At the moment, there is no special case for being annoyed by smokers in an outdoor area - though there might well be one day, so you have SOME hope - but I bet there'll never come a day I can be sure of not being annoyed by someone else's dog.

I hate dogs, OPCs, unattractive (to my eye) people, people wearing too little clothing, people wearing too much clothing, wet people, people building sand castles, picnickers / BBQers and people who play sports on beaches.

AIBU? Yes I fucking am. Part of living in society is living alongside those who do things differently. YABU OP.

Beaches attract all sorts of people, including loud, annoying adults and their equally obnoxious children. Smokers are the least of the problem, imo.

YANBU regarding people stubbing cigarette butts out in the sand.

However YABU regarding people smoking on the beach. It's an open space and they are well within their rights to do it. If you don't like it move or find another beach.

smoking is annoying, but if you are mobile and in the UK there are plenty of beaches where you can avoid other people.

Ah, I remember years ago when I joined MN there was an awesome thread about smoking at an outdoor restaurant area.

The OP was outraged that a leathery looking woman with a younger (?) male companion had dared to light up at a table nearby. I think the leathery looking woman refused to stub her fag out or something.
Plus it was a chilly autumn night and the OP had her baby with her.
Cue lots of people pointing out that if it was a chilly night then why didn't they sit inside where there was no smoke.

There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing of opinions on that thread and it was fantastic.

I was in a long traffic jam recently, two buses alongside me. The fumes coming out of the exhausts were unbelievable, far worse than a bit of fag smoke.

Phoebe no I cant enjoy a day in the beach if there are cigarette butts in the sand. I happen to be someone that cares about the environment an awful lot. You might not know what awful things artificial litter can do to sea animals but try to research it.

It is a horrible thing to do and it would upset me terribly

I think people should be considerate to people in their vicinity. That includes smoking and other antisocial activities like loud music in public etc.

Just because other activities are antisocial doesn't make smoking in public if it is disturbing others acceptable.

I'd pay money to see a cycling smoker with a dog on the beach usual.

Even better if they parked their bike in a P&C space at the shop when they go to buy another packet of fags.

I think there's far more to worry about bathing in pure sewage than people smoking
