At the beach today with ds. It's fairly busy, lots of kids running around.
I am surrounded by people smoking. 2 people behind me are smoking and a woman in front of me. Plus a group of people just down the beach a bit who are all Smoking. It stinks.
I know it's an open space so they are entitled I suppose but it's horrible and there are kids running around etc. You can't help but smell it etc!
Just wish beaches were smoke free zones. Plus all of them are putting the cigarette ends in the sand!
Aibu to be annoyed?!!

The sooner smoking outright banned any where other than on private property the better. It's disgusting. I say that as an ex smoker.

Health concerns are rather ridiculous - it's a beach, in the open air.

Having said that, I hate people smoking anywhere near me because the smell is so foul and putting the butts in the sand is just moronic.

I've smoked on the beach before. I chose my spot accordingly and my cig ends went in my empty coke can which was put in the bin on leaving the beach. "All smokers" are not inconsiderate. A small minority are. Just like with anything we all get tarred with the same brush.
I don't smoke anymore and have visited may beaches where I've seen the odd smoker. But never on the scale you mention.

Even smokers that stick to their own homes can cause ill health and misery.

You do realise drinkers do this too right? fights, throwing up everywhere, dropping their bottles/cans on the floor, being gobby ect ect. Shall we take away alcohol too?

Cheby I used to live in a block of flats where the smoke from the people below me came through so much that I would wake up in the morning with a sore throat

Wow! That's a severe second hand smoke allergy you have there. Have you seen a doctor?

I think surrounded by people smoking was a touch exaggerated to make a better op.
Either way, I'd far rather be "surrounded by" a few smokers on the beach than loud, whinging children and their helicopter parents insisting on overseeing every fucking bucket full of sand and making it into an educational experience Hmm

Doing an impression of Vivien Leigh in The Birds

Tippi Hedren?

TBH, I don't like smoking, the smell is grim, and if people plonked themselves down close to another group on a non-crowded beach, knowing they were going to smoke, then that's pretty inconsiderate and yes, entitled. I usually remove myself if people light up and the smell bothers me (or I have the kids with me) but that cuts both ways. I'm often surprised that smokers don't get just how awful the smell can be.

I've always been shocked by the number of cigarette butts on beaches and in parks in this country. If only all smokers were as considerate as the virtuous paragons on this thread.

The only thing more annoying than a judgemental non-smoker is a judgemental ex-smoker (he says judgingly as an ex-smoker).

I imagine it would be annoying OP, but as many people have said, they weren't doing anything wrong- it may be considered inconsiderate but it wasn't illegal.

Yanbu. It's rank. They can't realise how much they stink

Looking forward to the day it's banned in all public places like other countries.

Most tourist offices in France and Spain give away free, plastic, lidded beach ashtrays if you ask for them, they look a bit like a luridly coloured plastic ice-cream cone, you stick the pointed end in the sand and take your butts away with you.

No real strong feelings on the beach thing and used to be a smoker but...

Why on these threads does smoking in a public place always get compared to fat people eventually?

'Oh you wouldn't ban fat people from eating smelly food in front of you'

No. I don't imagine anyones health had ever been put in danger by smelling a pork and stuffing batch or looking at some cellulite.

I have a nephew who has really bad asthma, walking behind a smoker has landed him on a nebuliser before.

I smoked but I still knew it was a pollutant/irritant so was mindful where I smoked. I just don't unseat and the denial?

Purple I didn't know that a sore throat caused by regularly breathing in lots of smoke for ten hours or more is a sign of allergy? I thought that was just a normal result of secondhand smoke - perhaps I should get checked out.

Have you ever thought about closing your windows? Just a thought

We are currently abroad on holiday and we were sitting by the (crowded) pool yesterday when a family came along and we had 5 of them smoking right next to us. It was disgusting and you would never have known we were in the 'fresh air' and to make matters worse there is a big sign at the entrance to the pool clearly stating no smoking! They are able to smoke elsewhere on the complex but just not by the pool. How hard is that to understand? Drove me insane yesterday and they were not putting their stubs in the bin but left them in the grass for people to tread on! In the end we left as their smoking was constant and went back to our apartment.
