At the beach today with ds. It's fairly busy, lots of kids running around.
I am surrounded by people smoking. 2 people behind me are smoking and a woman in front of me. Plus a group of people just down the beach a bit who are all Smoking. It stinks.
I know it's an open space so they are entitled I suppose but it's horrible and there are kids running around etc. You can't help but smell it etc!
Just wish beaches were smoke free zones. Plus all of them are putting the cigarette ends in the sand!
Aibu to be annoyed?!!

I agree it's horrible, even in open spaces, most smokers either don't care or are oblivious as to how horrible it is, how far it travels & how long it lingers.

It would be great to go the way of BC and it be banned in all public spaces.

I think the smokers should be more considerate of their surroundings & A rather snooty looking lady, did that pathetic fake cough thing & hand waving of smoke, made an acidic comment & was so concerned about her performance, she walked straight into a post. Was so funny*

I would have LOVED to see something like that Grin

OP YANBU. It is grim when you are at the beach and smokers come and sit nearby, its worse when it's a hot day as the smoke kind of hangs in the air.

I honestly think there are some smokers who don't realise how bad their cigarettes smell or how horrible it is for non smokers to have to breathe in second hand smoke.

Hope you still had a good day despite this.

Grin usual

And this No smoker ever has stubbed out their cigarette in the sand and put the dog end in their pocket
I'd not leave mine on the beach.
Although I tend to try to find a nearby bar to smoke in rather than on the actual beach. Unless there are families around me smoking then I'll join them.
I can't say I've been to a beach in the UK for years and years though.

YABU I hate the smell of smoke, makes me nauseous. if you said you were at a beer garden where tables are close together or food is being served I would have said YANBU banish the lot of them, a beach is pushing it though you don't get much more open/breezier.

A cigarette butt take something like 10 years to disappear, in meantime at beach it can get into sea & it's toxins are released, in studies, 1 butt was put in bucket of water with small marine life - within, I think, 12 hours 50% were dead from toxins.
Butts have also been found in stomach is dead fish & turtles who have mistaken them for food.

In an outdoor bar once a smoker at next table didn't want to inflict his smoke on his non- smoking mates, but felt it was ok to hold it over at our table - he was quite put out when I asked him not too.
Smoking is a horrible stinking habit & thankfully is becoming less socially acceptable.
I smoked for years & still get the odd craving but will never smoke again & the "poor put upon smokers" need to realise passive smoking is a real thing.

I hate being surround with secondhand smoke. I'm so glad that it's banned on beaches over here, and within 15/30 feet of doorways. YANBU

I am an ex smoker and now I am a vaper.
I ALWAYS put fag butts in a bin especially if i am at a beach and dont like finding other peoples ends in the sand. In fact i had a portable ashtray which sealed shut and never dropped them in the street either.
Neither do I like finding the plaster that someones child has left behind when it has fallen off, used tissues, baby wipes, cans, wrappers, chip papers etc etc etc It annoys me when 'all smokers' are tarred with the same brush

As a smoker I tried to be considerate and would smoke in smoking areas but on a beach I would smoke but always aware of who was around me. I did chain smoke and breathe it over everyone and frequently would walk away to an empty spot to support my habit.

Now I vape. My e-cig lets of very little vape and when i exhale hardly anything comes out. It does not smell and this has been confirmed my my very anit smoker/vaper mother who can smell everything a mile off and all my friends and family. Yet still I treat it like a cigarette and would not do it in a no smoking place.

It doesnt matter what you do to be considerate to others though. frequently i have moved away from groups of people to smoke or vape only to have people move near me and moan about it. Yes i wish i didnt do it too which is why i am trying to stop, yes its not nice for people to breathe in my smoke. On a beach though how long does the smell linger and how much does it really get caught in your clothes and hair (serious question as i cant smell it as a smoker and now i dont smoke have never noticed it on my when in a similar situation)

Exactly and it doesn't matter what size the beach is.

It's still next to the wide open sea.

Pushing it is an understatement...

If I couldn't smell it it wouldn't be an issue would it?!!

Somehow I doubt it; even the action of smoking seems to be enough for the hysteria to kick in for some Hmm

As an ex smoker, sometimes the whole issue seems like a peculiar and rather disturbing need to control, rather than a problem with the actual smoke ...

Actually, I never drop cigarette butts on the beach, in parks or in the street.

If there isn't bin available, I take them home, just like any other litter.

They could get up wen they need to smoke, on the promenade or something, away from people playing in the sand.
Then come back when they've finished their fag.

I don't think smokers realise just how horrid the smell is or how far away you smell it. It lingers. Yes even when it's windy. I was on the football pitch yesterday, one of the mums lit up so I moved away. She only decided to move towards me again as I think she though I'd moved for a better view! Gah. Had to move again. By now I'm thinking I look like I'm being very unfriendly. ( only a few there) I am too polite to say go away you smell!

As a very militant smoker, now ex-smoker.... I am shocked by the arrogance I had in the past. Smokers stink, I stank. I am ashamed of smoking outside my local pub and making people walk through my group's smoking circle to get into the pub. Properly shocked now by how righteous I was. Pubs should ban smokers from their entrances because it makes them look bad. I now live in Australia and you basically can't smoke here: this is good. I could not have been a 20-a-day smoker here because I'd have been constantly looking for somewhere to smoke It's not worth it. I now vape.

I don't think I'm controlling as a pregnant asthmatic for not wanting to breathe in someone else's toxic fumes, it is mostly the children that I feel for on a beach the has smokers or anywhere in fact, people are addicted to all sorts of things but when it impacts someone else it isn't fair. I think smokers and arrogant to think they aren't having an impact on others.

Why do people ALWAYS drag in the non-argument about pollution from vehicles on discussions like this? (a) Vehicles are necessary, smoking isn't; and (b) even if that were not the case, how does the fact that some pollution exists conceivably justify adding to it unnecessarily?

I hate the smell of smoke but I don't think I could dredge up a fuck to give about people smoking on the beach litter issue notwithstanding obv.

I think you have to have taken up offence as a profession for that to bother you.
