At the beach today with ds. It's fairly busy, lots of kids running around.
I am surrounded by people smoking. 2 people behind me are smoking and a woman in front of me. Plus a group of people just down the beach a bit who are all Smoking. It stinks.
I know it's an open space so they are entitled I suppose but it's horrible and there are kids running around etc. You can't help but smell it etc!
Just wish beaches were smoke free zones. Plus all of them are putting the cigarette ends in the sand!
Aibu to be annoyed?!!

Move upwind of the dirty stinkers. Dumping the dog ends is filthy but that's people for you.

YANBU. Why don't you lobby your politicians and work on that. I'm in BC/Canada and smoking is banned in ALL public places.

I hate being near moaning cows on the beach, they spoil it for everyone, especially when kids are around.
Who wants to see sour faces?

So it was a conspiracy m0ther? All the smokers 'surrounding' op concealed their cigarettes/lighters/whiffiness UNTIL she got comfy and then started puffing away? All of them? Okay then Grin

I love this thread Grin

Normally I smile when someone whinges about a tiny bit of outdoor cigarette smoke on the breeze.

But this takes it to a whole new level, given how massively wide open the surroundings are next to the sea.

It probably blows away quicker than a fart.

And no I don't smoke, before anyone assumes I do.

cigarette butts on the beach are annoying but so is the rubbish left behind by other beach goers, as an ex smoker i don't like second hand smoke, makes me want a ciggie Grin so i have the options of putting up with it or moving, i usually move, but then smokers aren't usually chain smoking so the smell will disperse.

I wish smoking would just be banned in all public places.

Blondie I'm another one who feels sick at fag ends, they ruin the beach.

People are allowed to smoke in wide open spaces

OP doesn't deny that. She reasonably expresses a wish that that wasn't the case in spaces such as beaches where children are likely to be. And I have to say I agree with her. Yes, people can move. But should they have to move from somewhere they have settled down just because someone has chosen to come and sit near them and blow smoke over them? Maybe smokers could think about the wind direction and smoke somewhere where the smoke drifts away from other people, not towards them?

As for "poor, picked on smokers" - who exactly forces the poor little flowers to smoke?

As I said in my OP I was here before the smokers! I didn't CHOOSE to sit next to them!

I think the smokers should be more considerate of their surroundings & the impact their disgusting drug habit has on others. YANBU however, there are ways & means of doing this. There was a door in town, of an office, Liverpool St way & the usual crowd of smokers were huddled. A rather snooty looking lady, did that pathetic fake cough thing & hand waving of smoke, made an acidic comment & was so concerned about her performance, she walked straight into a post. Was so funny.
I agree though OP, YANBU however, diplomacy is key here & when you think about it, should something that can kill people second hand, be allowed in public, well of course the answer is no.

No but smokers generally don't chain smoke on the beach so it's not always obvious.

My comment re walking behind a smoker and the response proves my point - completely oblivious to how your stink affects others. I don't want it in my hair and I don't want to smell it any more than dog mess - equally as revolting. Do it at home. How anyone thinks non smokers pandering to smokers is right is beyond me but by all means defend your rights but I'm not going to suddenly be okay with the smell because I "need to chill".

FGS. Sick of it. Let's ban fat people too, especially in bikinis, they're such an eyesore.

I bet most smokers take their fag butts away with them when they leave. All the smokers I know do. Sand is great for putting out a fire of any sort, so best way of putting a fag out. Most people dig 'em out and take them with them and put in the bin with their other rubbish.

I hate having to smell smoke too. YANBU. Why should they inflict their filthy habits on everyone else? If they need a puff on their cancer stick, they should get up and do it away from everyone.

Report
Babyzoo · 12/08/2016 15:29

Judging by the amount of fag ends littering everywhere I doubt that most people do take them with them.

Yes I could move. And they could think about their 2nd hand smoke and the kids running around. And yes I can smell it. It's hard not to!! If I couldn't smell it it wouldn't be an issue would it?!!
But I can yes, even on the big open beach you assume I'm on ( which I'm not -I'm on a small enclosed cove!)

Dog ends in the sand is manky, wouldn't be impressed with that. But I can't believe the smoke was that bad, in one of the windiest places around - how many of them were there that the sea beeeze couldn't blow the smoke away!

I've never smoked, hate it but you can't ban everything. I think smoking out in the fresh air is pretty inoffensive in the great scheme of things.

I hate the smell of cigarettes but on a beach in the open air I wouldn't get wound up by it.

As a PP said there's usually a good breeze by the coast.

I would ban people setting up a massive windbreak fort complete with tents taking up loads of beach. And people that bury nappies.

I have an Australian relative who smokes. Last time she came to visit, every single time she finished a cigarette, she would stub it out and carefully put the butt into a lidded metal box she carried round.

As she explained it, this sort of behaviour is drummed into Australians due to the many bush fires caused by fag ends. The bonus side effect is that of not littering either.

If only we could be so civic minded here.

No-one as far as I'm aware.

But obviously addiction is a complicated thing.

Hence why it's not a good idea to be nasty about anyone struggling with an addiction.

CakeRattleandRoll · 12/08/2016 15:34

Here in Western Australia, it actually is prohibited to smoke in the area between the lifesaving flags on the beach. (As well as within 10m of any children's playground equipment and in a car if a child under 17 is inside.)

Australian anti-smoking regulations in general are some of the toughest in the world, and consequently our smoking rates are some of the lowest, and continuing to fall. For a non-smoker like me (and the vast majority of the population) it is great not to be subjected to unwanted passive smoking, or to have to move somewhere else because a "poor picked-on smoker" needs their nicotine.

FGS. Sick of it. Let's ban fat people too, especially in bikinis, they're such an eyesore.

Fat people don't blow smelly smoke at other people, including people with asthma, nor do they cause other people's clothes and hair to smell.

Hence why it's not a good idea to be nasty about anyone struggling with an addiction.

What is nasty about asking people with that addiction to exercise it somewhere where it doesn't entail blowing smoke over other people? There's nothing about an addiction to smoking that requires you to do it on a beach where other people are trying to enjoy the sea air.

I'm a smoker myself, but I agree with everybody. Each cigarette ends up in the sand which to me is not only harming the environment, but is an extremely ugly activity. Not to mention that we annoy you, non smokers who went to the beach to have fun with their kids. I think we should split like: smokers to the left, nonsmokers to the right Grin

It's odd that people view the great outdoors as though it should be subject to the same rules as some indoor city venue. Weird attitude and mustn't be allowed to catch on Smile

Judy I'm talking about the nasty, flippant comments that are always aimed at nicotine addicts on MN.

Not just those who impose upon others.
