Just got kicked off a Facebook group....was I unreasonable?

I was on a teacher training group (the one where I posted an AIBU about the trainee who could not add a quarter and a half).
Most of the posts are, IMO, a bit vacuous. Fashion advice for trainees etc
Anyway one woman posted a photo of her new £34 planner last night with the caption "look at my £34 planner...cannot wait until September soooo excited!" and I posted "can people just stop bragging off". I was then dogpiled by a load of women who are soooo excited to start their training, so I blocked them and then got booted.
I think the main issue is I am not "soooo excited" about September. It looks like bloody hard work. I am looking forward to it, but not exactly doing cartwheels over all the hard graft I am going to have to put in.
Perhaps it is because I am older than the other trainees at 40. I dunno. Perhaps I am just a miserable grump.

Yabu

QueenofallIsee · 11/08/2016 11:31

I would have thought the same, but not said so - it was a bit harsh if she was merely excited to give her the brush off. Its not 'done' on Social Media to type exactly what you think!! You don't care for the comment, you ignore it.

Scarydinosaurs · 11/08/2016 11:31

You are, in your words, a massive grump. It was a really rude and unnecessary comment to make.

fruityb · 11/08/2016 11:31

Yes you are a bit of a miserable grump but I get where you're coming from. However as someone who gets very excited about stationery and books and bought a lot of stuff I never actually used before PGCE I get where they're coming from as well.

It is bloody hard work and at times completely and utterly overwhelming, but sometimes a planner and new stationery makes that a little better Smile and it is an exciting time - it's the start of a career. (In a job that will change so much in five years you'll wonder why you trained for it in the first place....)

Scarydinosaurs · 11/08/2016 11:31

Often blocking people in a group, especially if they're admin, will get you kicked out.

Queenbean · 11/08/2016 11:31

You were rude

And this is very identifying

scaryteacher · 11/08/2016 11:32

I used to love my planner, but teaching is hard work, and my PGCE and NQT year were the hardest things I have ever done. I did my PGCE at 35, having had a previous career and a ds, but because I had a hinterland and a family, so wasn't eating, thinking, breathing and shitting teaching 500%, as I had other claims on my time, some were Hmm with me.

Good luck, I Ioved it, but resigning to move abroad after 5 years was one of my better decisions.

mrgrouper · 11/08/2016 11:33

I think the problem is it was the umpteenth post about this type of thing. People posting piles of books with the "look what I have bought...cannot wait until September" caption.
I am actually quite happy to be booted as it was annoying me.

You are a miserable grump.

Sometimes fabulous office supplies can brighten up a shit job.

ElsaAintAsColdAsMe · 11/08/2016 11:33

You were rude, but it sounds like it's no real loss to you to be kicked off as you don't seem to enjoy being in the group anyway.

YABU. It's good that they are looking forward to training, right?
And maybe this girl is a stationery fan - there's a whole section of MN for them!

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 11/08/2016 11:33

It was rude. Social media is not MN! Grin

Ginkypig · 11/08/2016 11:34

I don't know you have every right to feel the way you do as its your feelings but so do they!

They are allowed to feel excited even if you don't so in that sense your being unreasonable.

I don't lik the pack mentality though!

To be honest after your last thread I think your better off out of the group, they are obviously "not your people" said in an annoying voice Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 11/08/2016 11:34

How dare someone be excited about something you're not! I hope you manage to accept different view points before you are in a class room with loads of kids with different opinions, likes and outlooks and you need to help mediate situations.

JenLindley · 11/08/2016 11:35

Yep YABU.

Know your audience Wink yes they were bragging, yes it's not nice to see but of course your comment was going to go down like a tonne of bricks! They're all excited, nervous, bigging themselves up, they don't need someone sticking a pin in their balloon right now. This group is not for you.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/08/2016 11:36

I think you were a bit...blunt, in your delivery.

Should have softened it up a bit "stealth boast! Glad you're looking forward to September but I'm dreading it after how hard last year was".

I mean, as a teacher I know it must be wearing having to be the best version of yourself 99.9% of the time (my husband is one, and finds it similarly wearing as much as he loves the actual teaching), but social media loses so much in tone at the best of times, being outright blunt is almost always going to go badly.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 11/08/2016 11:36

I'd have probably thought the same OP, but posting that comment on it was unnecessarily rude, grumpy and confrontational.

TheNaze73 · 11/08/2016 11:36

YABU, leave the group if it grinds your gears that much

carefreeeee · 11/08/2016 11:37

why were you even in the group? it does sound annoying - I would have booted myself off it

mrgrouper · 11/08/2016 11:37

I am just a bit overwhelmed by the idea of doing this training year. I really want to do it and feel I have the potential to be a great teacher, but it is one hell of a lot of work and this worries me.

OP posts:
acasualobserver · 11/08/2016 11:38

£34 for a planner?! Are the lessons already in there?

chickenowner · 11/08/2016 11:38

If you're worried about the training year being hard work maybe you should have a serious rethink about teaching at all!

SlinkyVagabond · 11/08/2016 11:39

You were rude about stationery and you were rude about her enthusiasm for a job she's trained hard for. (As you have) Time enough for her to be disillusioned without you bursting her bubble.
But mainly you were rude about stationery.

ElspethFlashman · 11/08/2016 11:39

But you didn't say any of that. You just accused her of bragging. What had she done to you, y'know???
