I was on a teacher training group (the one where I posted an AIBU about the trainee who could not add a quarter and a half).
Most of the posts are, IMO, a bit vacuous. Fashion advice for trainees etc
Anyway one woman posted a photo of her new £34 planner last night with the caption "look at my £34 planner...cannot wait until September soooo excited!" and I posted "can people just stop bragging off". I was then dogpiled by a load of women who are soooo excited to start their training, so I blocked them and then got booted.
I think the main issue is I am not "soooo excited" about September. It looks like bloody hard work. I am looking forward to it, but not exactly doing cartwheels over all the hard graft I am going to have to put in.
Perhaps it is because I am older than the other trainees at 40. I dunno. Perhaps I am just a miserable grump.

you have to ask yourself, would you have said the same thing to her face? or would you have smiled sweetly then inwardly groaned and rolled your eyes.

80schild · 12/08/2016 20:59

Stationary is a weird thing to get excited about. I would be far too Hmm to comment about it. So yes OP you are YABU, if only because she is clearly very odd.

Groovee · 12/08/2016 21:03

Yabu. You were rude, blocked people then were rude to people on here. Depression is hard but it never excuses rudeness.

Maybe social media isn't the right place for you. I wish you well in your training.

CandODad · 12/08/2016 21:04

OP the FB cycle for my PGCE group went as such:

Start-Oct - "oh my god this is all so much fun, we will all be besties etc. etc. (remember you will prob be in Uni for all of 12 weeks) Starting number 198
Oct - Dec - "The Uni won't change my placement, my mentor is evil, I have so much marking to do plus assignments" (When spending time in Uni you will notice those that thought it was just a year of shits and giggles are disappearing fast)
Jan - March "This Uni work just isn't fair, can anyone help with references for xxx, this isn't what teaching is, blah, blah blah (Meanwhile you will notice some just didn't make the grade on first placement and have slipped away. (and by the way this is the point where some start looking for jobs)
March - June "This is not the same as my first placement, my mentor is sooo mean, whats the point of x,y,z? I am so sick of traveling (add to this "yay I got a job" annoyances)
June/July - My god we all survived, lets get ratted Final number 106

The overriding thing is for you to remember you will need these people and be working in groups so prob best to learn to bite your tongue, nod and smile. (While mentally stabbing them in the neck with your purple pen)

It's really not. That's why it's a popular gift and gift shops have so much of the stuff.

pictish · 12/08/2016 21:44

80s - google 'stationery porn' and see just how popular stationery is!

Gabilan · 12/08/2016 21:57

Please make sure you google stationery porn not stationary porn. They're quite different. Apparently.

stationary porn

Stationary porn must be pretty boring.

Not much action.

Maybe for the starfish type of sexual partner?

BetweenTwoLungs · 12/08/2016 23:11

I bet it was a pirongs personalised one, you can customise what's on each page - www.pirongs.co.uk

I think when you're nervous or worried about a course buying things can seem like a proactive way to prepare for some (even if in reality it's not!)

CloudyLemons in all honesty I think a planner might not get used... One of those things that seems nice to have but hard to know how useful it will be.

My go to present for would-be teachers/student teachers I've had is a personalised stamp from here - www.primaryteaching.co.uk/allstampers?f3=Personalised

Something like Mr Smith Loves This or similar will get used a lot. You can also get some personalised stickers from there too. Good service and comes quickly!

BetweenTwoLungs · 12/08/2016 23:12

That said I suspect secondary may use a planner more.

Smurfnoff · 12/08/2016 23:20

Why do you give a shit? It's a group you're not interested in making comments you don't like - stay away!

Cloudylemons · 12/08/2016 23:26

Thank you for that, BetweenTwoLungs I'll look at those stamps.

NapQueen · 12/08/2016 23:29

Well I know which of you I would prefer teaching my dcs.

IAmACraftyTeacher · 13/08/2016 00:44

My planner cost more than £34! I use it every day as it is the only way for me to manage real life and teaching! It is an A5 six ring Kikki K. I make inserts for it to manage everything.
I also have stickers and pens and washi tape to match everything.
I love stationary.
Don't be so rude about other peoples likes and sanity props!
(Oh, and after 12 years I can honestly say that teaching NEVER gets any easier...)

robinia · 13/08/2016 00:59

How on earth can a planner cost £34?
YANBU op, though perhaps a little tactless. But no more tactless than someone who brags about the price of their planner. By all means get excited about your lovely new planner - I can do that too - but why mention the price?!

OneOfTheGrundys · 13/08/2016 06:42

They were not being U about the planner. When the stationary pack arrives in my sweaty paws I stroke it a bit. Smile

You've got a more realistic picture of teacher training that's all. You're out of kilter with the group. There are more to join, maybe as the year goes on.

All the best for September.

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 13/08/2016 09:39

Teacher planners are expensive! They are also very exciting when you are starting your NQT year. I filled mine in with as much as I could straight away.

IAmACraftyTeacher · 13/08/2016 09:43

Now that's one of the things you do learn fairly quickly - put everything in pencil! There is no other job that I have ever had where plans change more frequently and class list are rarely stable for the first few weeks.
I joined teaching late and I still think 'ah, bless' when I see a fresh faced 20 something arrive. But I don't take the piss and I do make them tea and feed them chocolate at the end of the day...

MuffyTheUmpireSlayer · 13/08/2016 09:44

I learnt that very quickly Crafty Grin my planner was a mess by the end of the year, with all the crossing-outs!

Rrross1ges · 13/08/2016 09:49

Well I know which of you I would prefer teaching my dcs

For sure.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/08/2016 09:56

Op as a soon to be teacher you should get used to the fact that the only good thing about September is new stationery. Pop yourself down to smiths.

Can't understand how young people would want a paper planner??

They might be coming to my child's school which has very poor wifi in the sheds terrapin classrooms!

Scorbus · 13/08/2016 22:10

A planner is useful for staff meetings. I am notorious for losing bits of paper so my planner is essential!
