We have visitors at the weekend, and will need a shed full of wine. Can anyone recommend where I can buy good wine, that won't cost a fortune? Red or white.

5 litres of southern french red is your best bet at 7 Euros a box. The one we are drinking is from Bergerac. Mind you you have to just have been there on holiday. HTH Grin

Otherwise Co-op own brand or Waitrose own brand are very good and usually about £4-5

SaucyJack · 09/08/2016 22:39

Get this one from Tesco.

It's very sweet- tastes like strawberry juice- but if that's one's cup of tea then you won't find better for the price.

FunnysInLaJardin · 09/08/2016 22:39

oh and yes to box wine. Tis all I mostly drink. You can get 10 litre boxes in France but we didn't have the room Sad

onlyslightlyinterested · 09/08/2016 22:41

I'm not keen on a box. Looks a bit crap on the table

Tesco: picpul, pecorino and vina sol when on offer for whites all around £6.

Reds: there are a couple of Spanish reds at £4.00 ish. The Tempranilo is drinkable. But I would go for their simply cote de Rhone for party quaffing.

Claireabella1 · 09/08/2016 22:42

Onlyslightlyinterested - definitely not true! Found it in Morrisons and Sainsburys too. It is yum, also has a nice label, so gives the impression it's posher than it is!

purplepaisley · 09/08/2016 22:44

Whale Caller South African white / red from Waitrose or Ocado is good at £5 per bottle. There are usually vouchers around for £20 off your first shop if you don't shop there already.

Thanks will go tomorrowSmile

Another vote for Aldi's Argentinian Malbec. Cheers. Wine

purplepaisley · 09/08/2016 22:48

Google tells me that Aldi deliver wine by the case for free. Might have to order some in the name of research, based on reviews on this thread. I don't have Aldi near me so don't know their range (yet).

onlyslightlyinterested · 09/08/2016 22:54

Thanks

Aldi Kooliburra red wines are better than Toro Loco IMO.

OP, get yourself a carafe for the table to decant your wine box wine into.

umizoomi · 09/08/2016 23:07

Love the Lidl Australian Chardonnay - a£3.99

As good as Oxford landing but not everyone likes Chardonnay

Tesco have a 2 for £9 offer on various big brands

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 09/08/2016 23:13

Aldi are doing free delivery on boxes of wine atm.

Tesco: Picpoul de Pinet £7 and lovely, lovely wine, they also do a Cotes De Gasgoigne which is £4.73 and actually alright.
Aldi: Prosecco is £5-£7 and all good, Cremant de Jura is £9, and their Gavi is about £5 and very nice. Actually you can't go far wrong with Aldi white wines tbf.

Magstermay · 10/08/2016 08:34

The Waitrose own brand as someone else said is really good at £5 a bottle, we drink it all the time

ClopySow · 10/08/2016 08:44

Morrisons own brand wine is good and cheap as chips, as are some of the sainsburys whites, reds not so much.

MissRainbowBrite · 10/08/2016 08:50

Asda Three Mills rose is £3 a bottle and one of the nicest roses I've found. Easy to drink but might be a bit sweet for some tastes. Worth a try at £3 though.

soupey1 · 10/08/2016 08:53

Hardy's Crest when on offer at Tesco for £5'ish a bottle. Or Majestic Wine Astronomer at £5.99 a bottle if you buy six or more. Both come in red and white.

loona13 · 10/08/2016 08:56

I love Tesco's Bella Cucina Prosecco £5.50 mixed with Bitterne Orange Prosecco (they also have watermelon and cucumber) £4. Very summery Wine

Most Chilean reds. Someone Spanish in Oddbins once gave me a detailed explanation why, but I don't remember it. Something to do with the soil and the water and the temperature and the altitude. He said it didn't work for whites, and he was right there too.

But cheap means between £7-£10.

ProfYaffle · 10/08/2016 09:20

Aldi Freeman's Bay NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Under £5 and very good.
