Good cheap wine

We have visitors at the weekend, and will need a shed full of wine. Can anyone recommend where I can buy good wine, that won't cost a fortune? Red or white.

Eh? Barefoot is absolutely minging. Maybe a box would be economical? (Not a box of Barefoot)

Bestthingever · 10/08/2016 22:07

I can't believe how many people are recommending Aldi. I wish we lived near a branch 🙁

Notmoreantihistamines · 10/08/2016 22:24

I have much hands on sampling exoerience of a vast variety of wine, only through pure enthusiasm.

Aldi/lidl very limited range, not very complex flavours, no length (residual flavour).

Sains good selections but at the lower price range not so much. Either too sweet of too high in alcohol. 14% is almost port strength. You will really siffer the following day.

Waitrose own brand eg ordinary claret quite good.

M&S, if they have 20/25% off on six bottles or more you can also combine with reductions, eg, Petit Chablis reduced £12 to £8, 25% for 6, got it for £6.

My favourite is the Co Op, the price point, free trade and varietal range is deceptively good. Their fairtrade wines, their chardonnay, viognier/ chenin blend, malbec, carmenere (lost grape of bordeaux) and pinot rose, all stunning and under £6.

Obvs, you will have to buy one of each and pick you favourite. Tough job, good luck. Wine

You're looking for value. I find the (not their cheapest) Aldi wines VGVFM.

Sometimes they email a special buy to order online, I had a mixed case, was surprisingly good. When they have oddments that are not their usual bulk-buys, in my local branch they put them in a different aisle. I suppose they will be bin-ends or special buys. I would look for a Sauvignon Blanc for a grown-up dry white, Malbec (red) if you see one, Shiraz for a sturdy red, Merlot for a soft one. For VFM I find Argentinian and Chileans good. Some people like Chardonnay (white) which is usually too soft for me.

Aldi also have a good value simple Champagne, Veuve Monsigny, or I have hear their Cremant de Jura is a fair fizz.

If you have time to order online, look at www.aldi.co.uk/wines/c/wines which should include mixed cases. Beware delivery charges, unless you can get an introductory offer.

I cant find a cheap wine I like. I like dry white, full bodied red and crisp rose. I end up buying a £10-£12 bottle because all the cheaper ones I try, I don't like.

This won't work for you this weekend, but we make our own from a Beaverdale kit bought online and it really is delicious. It works out at £1.10 a bottle. You have to buy a bucket thing to make it in, and a few other bits of kit, but they are fairly cheap. We have 2 buckets bubbling away usually, one to drink and one 'cooking'. We don't even bother bottling it, we just siphon it into a decanter.

Marks and Spencer do litre bottles of Italian wine which are nice, and I think £6.99. I usually get that if we run out of homemade.

alexandragimenez · 11/08/2016 11:50

I think Lidl is okay with cheap wines (personal experience, cheapest getting drunk ever!) Wink

dotty2 · 11/08/2016 13:00

I don't think anyone up thread has yet recommended supermarketwine.com

They collate all newspaper reviews by supermarket so you can just look for where you're going and see what's been recommended lately and are a great source of bargains - as well as treats. I get nearly all my wine from their recommendations.

CordeliaScott · 11/08/2016 13:48

I like this one:

www.waitrose.com/shop/DisplayProductFlyout?productId=224818

They regularly have offers on the wine and I tend to buy a case of this every time it is reduced

TeamEponine · 11/08/2016 13:55

Tesco do a great prosecco for £5. Both the white and the rose are lovely.

HooseRice · 11/08/2016 13:59

I get a sauv Blanc from asda called Fat Bird, it is six or seven quid a bottle and very good.

I also rate Co-op Fairtrade wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is one of my favourites at £5.99 a bottle.

JockMonsieur · 11/08/2016 14:00

aldi exquisite collection is worth looking at
the Cremant du Jura sparkling Chardonnay is better than most supermarket champagnes
the Limoux Chardonnay is lovely as well - creamy and fruity

Iwantamarshmallow · 11/08/2016 14:00

Asda La Moneda Reserva Malbec is £4.37 a bottle it won a Decanter World Wine Award and it taste amazing. I don't think anyone would guess who much it cost.

KittyKrap · 11/08/2016 14:11

I ruddy well love Malbec! Wine

Hippychickster · 11/08/2016 14:15

Not read the whole thread so apologies if these have been mentioned, but Aldi Freemans Bay Sauvignon is my favourite wine. I think it's £5.50 or something. My daughter says the Pinot is also really good. Grey label, about £2.99

2kids2dogsnosense · 11/08/2016 21:48

Barefoot Wines are LOVELY! I particularly recommend the Merlot. but I haven't tried any I didn't enjoy. Barefoot are the only red wines that don't give me a headache, but the whites and roses are superb, too.

Between £5.50 and £7.00 a bottle - obtainable just about anywhere, I think.

Statelychangers · 11/08/2016 22:47

We always buy wine in bulk from majestic - their wine buyers are excellent, rarely have a bad bottle. Remember to allow red to breath at least an hour before serving - when guests have had a few they won't notice so much if you haven't, if you don't have a decanter use a jug.

FunnysInLaJardin · 11/08/2016 23:00

OP I am Shock that you are snobbish about how boxes look on the table. Decant them if you or your guests are really that bothered. They really are one of the best and most economical ways to buy wine.

Most of southern France buys their wine like this. Turn up at the Chateau and buy a vat load. Who cares what the bottle looks like.

I mean literally a vat, some friends of mine buy it by the casket, the most delicious provencal red you would ever get to taste!

bettythebuilder · 12/08/2016 00:16

Be warned if any of your guests have allergies/intolerances, a lot of Aldi wines contain milk.
I know, I thought wtf as well, but having shopped at our newly-opened Aldi today I struggled to find wines red or white that didn't say they contained Sulphites, Egg, Milk on the label. It was a very traumatic shop for me Smile I had to buy lots of cider instead and plan a trip to lidl.

sportinguista · 12/08/2016 06:05

Tagus Creek from Asda, their Dao is great too and inexpensive. Tesco Douro is nice too. They are all red but we don't really drink whites, a good Vinho Verde is great chilled and quite an easy drink.

cheeseycharlie · 12/08/2016 09:28

The Wine Society
I know I know you probably think it's just for poshos and connosoieurs (I can't even spell connosoieurs !) but they have really well priced bottles and do great mixed cases that can come in at under £5 a bottle. I've literally never had a bad bottle of wine from them, and believe me I get through a fair bit! Plus people are always really impressed with it. And bcos it's the 'proper stuff' you don't get a hangover like with supermarket wine.
You pay £40 to become a member but you immediately redeem that against your first order so it doesn't actually cost anything.

cheeseycharlie · 12/08/2016 09:29

It's all online just google the wine society

Tatlerer · 12/08/2016 12:57

Yes cheesy wine society is great!
