Good cheap wine

We have visitors at the weekend, and will need a shed full of wine. Can anyone recommend where I can buy good wine, that won't cost a fortune? Red or white.

My regular buys are from aldi- all under £6 and all liked by guests so far:

Standard prosecco - think it's called Belletti
Pinot Gris
Exquisite collection Malbec - a firm fave in this house

I've tried a few others but always come back to these.

MrsJayy · 10/08/2016 09:52

Aldi wine always gets me really drunk 2 glasses and im zonked Blush I avoid it now.

helenatroy · 10/08/2016 10:04

Lidil do a Sauvignon blanc from NZ (cimaroza) which is great. They work a ratings system. Look for anything rated 85 or above as someone from decanter rates the wines.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 10/08/2016 14:55

it is Arfarfanarf - not that it matters, if you like it you like it! (I realise my post probably came over incredibly snobbish - sorry about that Blush)

Sciurus83 · 10/08/2016 15:19

Another vote for NZ sauvignon here, most supermarkets will have one on offer for around £6

Stickerrocks · 10/08/2016 15:47

The Knackered Mother's Wine Club recommended buying the supermarket own label, as their buyers know their stuff and have a great choice to be able to put their name too. I've done this ever since and love the Waitrose versions at £4.99 per bottle, Tesco Simply (but I don't get on with their Chianti) & the Sainsburys Whites.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/08/2016 16:02

Another vote for Aldi's Toro Loco...

cressetmama · 10/08/2016 17:36

Tesco's Telegraph Station Pinot Noir is a pleasant lightish red, that's rather good chilled slightly, at £5.50 which is the house red chez cresset. The equivalent white is also okay at the same price, but seems to have vanished from the shelf. For another white, I'd suggest the Lidl Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, at about £5.80.

cressetmama · 10/08/2016 17:37

Whoops, see that HelenaTroy has already suggested the Lidl Kiwi number, so seconding it.

Postchildrenpregranny · 10/08/2016 17:54

Yes Aldi ToroLoco and their Shiraz Cabernet with purple lizard on it (also £3.99)

pizzaeatingmonkey · 10/08/2016 18:36

Just been shopping and thank you to whoever suggest the Tesco Malbec , it's fruity goodness!!

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/08/2016 19:03

On eat well for less last week they swapped the usual prosecco for aldi cava & they thought it was champagne Confused

They were really shocked when they showed them it was cava

ilovejumpers · 10/08/2016 19:52

I second Tesco Picpoul, it's as good if not better than the one we knock out in the restaurant I work in. Reds...... Sainsburys morador Malbec at 7 pounds a bottle or cahors Malbec normally on offer at 5.50.

waitingforgodot · 10/08/2016 19:53

I love Aldi wine-particularly the Chilean Sauv Blanc. You can get some really good wines in Coop too. They have decent offers on most of the time.

FayaMAMA · 10/08/2016 21:21

Aldi have a couple of good ones, their fleurie is particularly good. Also premier estates are really cheap and their merlot/shiraz aren't too bad. 4 for £10 in my local off license... I always get them for dinner parties and decant them... I'm not one for cheap wine but this does it's job for me and I've never had any complaints. Their white wines are abysmal though, so stay clear.

As a child my parents always used to do day trips to France to stock up on good quality cheap wine, unfortunately with the high prices of ferry crossings these days it's not really feasible.

RJnomore1 · 10/08/2016 21:27

Some of the wines suggested on here are a bit nasty (barefoot for a start)

I can only really recommend white as we drink red rarely and share a bottle so I don't mind paying a bit more but for a White Tesco finest gavi, fiano or picpoul. All usually between £5-7 each depending what offers are on.

hugoagogo · 10/08/2016 21:39

Anything from asda extra special usually go down a treat.
Especially the Dao, the Malbec and the Prosecco.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/jan/18/aldi-lidl-best-budget-wines

Can vouch for the Chilean white Pedro Jimenez from lidl at £4.

footballwidow12 · 10/08/2016 21:50

Both Aldi and Lidl's prosecco is lovely. I also picked up a decent (by that I mean drinkable) prosecco today at morrisons for £6 xx

ghostyslovesheep · 10/08/2016 21:51

another Aldi Toro Loco fan here - and their Cava is lush

Tatlerer · 10/08/2016 21:52

I'm married to a bit of a wine nut (example- we're about to build a temperature-controlled wine room off our kitchen!) but we like Co-op 'Australian red'- won in a pub quiz once and we've bought it repeatedly since! £3.99 or £3.75. Billy Bargain.

lazybones77 · 10/08/2016 21:52

I like a dry white and am loving Wolf Blass Chard just now. It's £5 in Tesco. Co op deals are really good. Usually the wines reduced to £4.99 and on a reduced display are really nice. I'm really not a fan of their fair trade ones. My favourite in co op is Lime Tree. It's about £5.75 but sometimes you get it with a pound off.

lazybones77 · 10/08/2016 21:53

Isla Negra and Hardys are always a good bet too. Not 'white wine' ones but chardonnay/Pinot etc. Not generic white I mean.

Cary2012 · 10/08/2016 21:53

Tesco currently have a very acceptable Chardonnay at £3.95 a bottle, tastes more like an 8 quid bottle. Today they were selling a crate of six for 14 quid.

lazybones77 · 10/08/2016 21:55

I find the really cheap bottles are always weaker in alcohol volume and if you're like me, the higher the alcohol, the better.
