'You look well!' FAT FROM PRAWN COCKTAILS

Went to a family wedding at the weekend. Sat opposite my lovely elderly grandparents who I hadn't seen for about ten months. When I first saw them before the ceremony my grandad bellows 'You're looking VERY WELL!! We hardly RECOGNISED you!!'

We had prawn cocktail for the starter. I love prawn cocktail. I joked that I probably could eat it for every meal (I DO NOT) .

I got a little letter from my Grandma today who has written exactly this:

'I see your love of prawn cocktails has caused you to put on a fair bit of weight! We were surprised to see you looking so bonny!'

I bloody well tried to lose a bit of weight before that feckin wedding aswell.

For the record, I am now a 10-12 where I used to be a 6-8 through starving myself I am small boned so possibly don't carry it that well but I'm not particularly short, 5"5. A combination of health issues and getting mightily pissed off with denying myself carbohydrates day after day as put it on. I seriously used to eat hardly anything.

AIBU to think I'm NOT fat, and even if I was, it's not very polite to say I've stuffed my face with prawn bloody cocktails!

sorry. I just needed to rant. She probably thinks I'm eating prawn cocktails for breakfast, lunch and dinner Grin

I think your Gran may be my MIL!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/08/2016 15:35

Tell them you've changed your surname to Fruits de Mer.

Fancy.

MadHattersWineParty · 09/08/2016 15:36

Germgirl · 09/08/2016 15:37

I'm afraid "She's not Scottish, she's from Croydon" made me snort in a most unladylike way Grin

Buzzybee51 · 09/08/2016 15:38

This really made me chuckle!
My Nan always makes comments about how much wait people have put on etc!
Bonny is a nice term though. It does sound as though she meant it as a compliment - albeit a strange way to compliment!

Crunchymum · 09/08/2016 15:38

You of course need to send a thank you card.

May I suggest this? Grin

I love the photo :D :D

Lweji · 09/08/2016 15:39

I agree with others that they meant it as in you look better in their eyes.

Bonny is supposed to mean beautiful, attractive.

Reply to them thanking them. :)
And be proud of your extra weight.

She sounds like my nan. She always comments on dh appetite and his belly. She also bought me size 12-14 pj's and said "oooohhhhh I'd never say you were a 10!" Cheers nan!

Bambooshoots14 · 09/08/2016 15:41

🍤🍸there you go britex

Fairlyfullmoon · 09/08/2016 15:42

Surely she means you're looking better than before, more healthy? surprised to see someone looking' bonny' to me would mean prettier and better looking and a bit of healthy weight gain could come under that

Marie-Rose Fruit de Mer?

There has never been a more elegant name! The OP should only wear marie rose coloured clothes too.

Sounds like my nan. If I was too thin then I needed meat on my bones and if I was on the chubby side then I had let myself goConfused

I was never bigger than a 10/12 when she was aliveHmm

WhereDoAllTheCalculatorsGo · 09/08/2016 15:44

now I want a prawn cocktail, sigh

LadyFarnborough · 09/08/2016 15:45

I'm sorry, I laughed too.
Your man could be related to my mum. I'm 25 weeks pregnant and she looked at me on Saturday and said 'You don't have much of a bump yet. You've just put weight on all over.' Thanks. Thanks a fucking lot.

Oblomov16 · 09/08/2016 15:46

Ha ha. They sound a right pair!!

peaceloveandtwirlywoos · 09/08/2016 15:46

Please ensure you are eating prawn cocktail crisps next time you see them.

wherethefuckisthefuckingtuna · 09/08/2016 15:48

bunty what an elegant gown!

Her beau, one Sebastian Moules-Mariniere will be arriving shortly to escort her to the Under The Sea ball.

bigTillyMint · 09/08/2016 15:49

Bonny is a Northern/Sottish compliment, particularly if you were too skinny before. But she comes from Croydon GrinGrinGrin

10/12 is NOT fat. Is she a scrawny size 6/8?

Lindy2 · 09/08/2016 15:50

I've never known anyone from Croydon say bonny (unless they are originally from Scotland). I'm actually laughing more at that than the prawns. I think she probably meant bonny to mean looking healthy, radiant etc. I'm from near Croydon and although bonny doesn't feature much in my vocabulary I did always believe it to generally be a complement.

LightTripper · 09/08/2016 15:51

Yes I was imagining a lovely Scottish Granny who just meant you looked lovely and she was pleased to see you had filled out a bit (which is still a bit inappropriate if you ask me as it's a bit of a judgement on how you looked before, but at least well meant). But you know her so you will know best what kind of Grandma she is!

BuntyFigglesworthSpiffington · 09/08/2016 15:51

Sebastian Moules-Mariniere will be arriving shortly to escort her to the Under The Sea ball.

Grin

I'm so jealous of the OP's elegant shellfish lifestyle. I hope she doesn't change her name when she gets married. Marie-Rose Moules-Mariniere-Fruits de Mer just sounds so zhuzzy.
