If I am expecting a vulva and in a private room am met with a penis...

I don't have to touch your penis, surely?

Yes.

"Help, help. I'm being oppressed"

Karen reportedly told the salon she was a transgender woman. The salon admit they assumed she was post operation. A misunderstanding occurred based on this assumption, but was handled entirely reasonably by the salon IMHO.

Waxing genitals (male or female) is obviously a very delicate process. I wouldn't particularly want someone with no relevant training to wax my sensitive parts! I'd much rather the salon politely told me that they had no one trained to do it. They also offered Karen any other form of waxing she wanted - they just couldn't wax her penis for her!

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:08

Japanese

If she did not explain that, in her case, she had a penis and testicles, then how is anyone to know?

I does not state in the article that she specified that she was a pre-operative transexual

venusinscorpio · 22/07/2016 15:08

people LOVE getting wound up about transgender people speaking up for themselves

people like you LOVE getting wound up about women speaking up for themselves.

When people say they are transgender, the vast majority of people assume that means they have had gender reassignment surgery i.e. a trans woman will have a vagina. So if Karen wasn't clear on the phone that Karen has male genitals it's possible that no one would have necessarily have thought to ask that because they thought they were dealing with a transsexual not a male bodied person. This is all such utter bullshit.

And women should not be put in the position where they have to deal with men's cocks against their will. Of course she was horrified.

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:13

Can I ask whether it's normal to assume that when someone tells you they are transexual, that they have a penis?

JapaneseSlipper · 22/07/2016 15:13

"people like you LOVE getting wound up about women speaking up for themselves."

Yes, you're right. Self-hating woman, that's me. Just adore all women to sit quietly at home, not saying anything, ever. You've seen right through me!

"When people say they are transgender, the vast majority of people assume that means they have had gender reassignment surgery i.e. a trans woman will have a vagina."

If I were the receptionist at the salon, I would have made sure it was all very clear before I took the booking.

"And women should not be put in the position where they have to deal with men's cocks against their will. Of course she was horrified."

That is the salon's fault, for not asking, and not passing on the relevant information.

JapaneseSlipper · 22/07/2016 15:15

"Can I ask whether it's normal to assume that when someone tells you they are transexual, that they have a penis?"

It's totally not clear. There are no rules.

So if I worked in a salon, and someone called and said "I'd like a wax please, but I'm transgender, will that be ok?" I would ask for more detail.

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:15

Japanese

If the client mad a point of saying they were transgender, then they could have been brave enough to speak up and say they still had a cock and balls

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:17

X post

Ah OK

Glad there are no rules

So you can see how misunderstanding occurs which stirring up a big old fuss about does nothing to rectify

JigglypuffsCaptor · 22/07/2016 15:19

So Japanese you feel now all persons who identify as trans should be asked a specific set of questions when booking appointments? So you expected small businesses to train up their staff on how to interrogate individuals about their genitals over the phone.

Ok then....

Dontyoulovecalpol · 22/07/2016 15:19

It's bonkers to expect the person who makes bookings in a salon to be up to speed with trans issues. Someone booked a Brazilian. Brazilians only happen on vulvas. So what if she said she was trans? Why on earth would the person on the phone know to ask whether that meant she has a penis?

venusinscorpio · 22/07/2016 15:21

If I were the receptionist at the salon, I would have made sure it was all very clear before I took the booking.

Oh you would? How exactly would you do that, without ""humiliating" Karen, because Karen believes that Karen is female and has female genitals? (you might have grasped that I don't) And is unlikely to want to be quizzed about it?

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:22

Is a male Brazilian called a Brazilian anyway?

Thought it was a sack and crack?

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:22

Sorry, not a male Brazilian.

I meant a pies and scrotum Brazilian

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:23

penis, not pies

venusinscorpio · 22/07/2016 15:26

It's idiotic to book a specific female beauty procedure, which is only done on a female body, and is not the same thing to do on a male body, and not clarify that in fact it would need to be done on male genitals.

Which is why I think that Karen set this up deliberately given that Karen then made a claim for compensation. I don't buy the good faith explanation.

KatharinaRosalie · 22/07/2016 15:28

I really don't see how the salon can win, if someone calls and ask for appointment, specifying they are trans. If they assume this means post op, Karen is not happy. If they start questioning their customers about the lack or presence of cock and balls, I bet the next customer makes an issue out of that.

LurkingHusband · 22/07/2016 15:29

pies and scrotum

Is that the new Netflix and chill ?

WibblyWobblyJellyHead · 22/07/2016 15:30

I've just googled the salon. It has a whole pile of 1 star reviews based on this incident. And loads of 5 star reviews from happy, regular customers.

How is it transphobic to not perform a solely female procedure on a male body? It beggars belief.

venusinscorpio · 22/07/2016 15:31

Exactly.

PinkyofPie · 22/07/2016 15:36

Without a doubt one of the most depressing parts of this article is the transwoman saying "I have feminised myself", and then believing that makes him a woman therefore everyone else should pretend his genatalia is female. It's such a male entitled attitude - "I say, therefore women obey!"

In about as feminine as Arnold Schwarzenegger today. Does this make me a man?

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:38

So, from my extensive research just now, I saw male total genital hair removal referred to as a Bikini wax?

I am very confused

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:39

I have no idea why there was a question mark in there

venusinscorpio · 22/07/2016 15:39

But more stories like this - all to the good.

More and more people will get their heads round the fact that transgender doesn't mean what they thought it did. It now means in practice anyone who fancies themselves to be a woman or wants to pretend to be one for whatever reasons, such as accessing women's space whenever they feel like it.

NotYoda · 22/07/2016 15:40

venus

That is true
