EveOnline2016 · 21/07/2016 00:56

Dh has had the snip 6 years ago. I am 10 days late.

Ok I am never late.

I know I'm not pregnant.

OP posts:
UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 22/07/2016 16:46

"Espoused" in this case meaning engaged afaik.

youshouldcancelthecheque · 22/07/2016 16:56

Where has the OP gone?

caroldecker · 22/07/2016 17:00

Sex is a sin whoever does it, being married does not stop it being sinful, which is why babies are babtised at birth.
Adam and Eve ate from the tree of (sexual) knowledge and became aware of their private bits and covered them up. That is how God found out about the apple eating.
It is important that Mary was born without Original Sin, so she could bear Jesus.

caroldecker · 22/07/2016 17:01

It is also why the Catholic church are against contraception because sex can only be performed for procreation, and contraception admits it is for fun other reasons

pegomassive1 · 22/07/2016 17:04

Op has disappeared to do a test me thinks

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 22/07/2016 17:08

That'll teach me to skip pages 2 & 3. Going from "Vasectomies can reverse themselves" to Bible study.

AdjustableWench · 22/07/2016 17:12

Just to add to the derail, in Roman Catholic doctrine Mary remained a virgin even after giving birth to Jesus.

In the Bible, in the original Greek, she's described as a 'parthenos' (Luke 1:27) which is usually translated 'virgin'. Matthew's gospel uses the same word in a quotation from the Old Testament (Matthew 1:23). The Old Testament quotation is from Isaiah 7:14 and uses a Hebrew word that is usually translated 'virgin'.

Whether these Greek and Hebrew words mean 'virgin' in the same way we mean it... well, people seem to debate that. The words might just mean 'young woman'. If so, that's a lot to derive a doctrine of miraculous birth from.

(I'm a bit overinvested in social constructions of virginity.)

And OP: I hope you have resolved things with your husband.

MrsKoala · 22/07/2016 18:07

Sex isn't a sin in marriage tho is it? I am s cultural Protestant and spent a LOT of time being dragged to an evangelical church in my youth and it was very much described as a joyous act between a married couple (and God - how's that for a creepy ménage a trois, perhaps that's why people say oh god oh god?) to celebrate the bodies that god gave us.

Smidge001 · 22/07/2016 18:13

Best thread ever! Grin

Thanks for helping with the explanations. I particularly liked the 'because she was special' and the foetus being 'really holy' remarks. Smile

caroldecker · 22/07/2016 18:13

All sex is a sin to Catholics. Churches allowing contraception allow 'recreational' sex within limited boundries

springwaters · 22/07/2016 18:15

SO. OP HAVE YOU DONE A TEST AND ARE YOU PREGNANT

Immaculate or otherwise

Starwarsorbaby · 22/07/2016 18:19

Shameless place marking Smile

Loving the derailment Grin

MrsKoala · 22/07/2016 18:26

Even the having a baby sex?! Shock how is the population meant to carry on? That's not very sex positive and uplifting is it? It's as tho you should feel guilty all the time. Grin

emotionsecho · 22/07/2016 18:30

This thread is why I love reading Mumsnet - the quantum leap into light hearted discussions of religious doctrine surrounding the Immaculate Conception and Virgin BirthGrin.

Both of Mary's parents were Saints weren't they? Is that part of her specialness?

DoinItFine Ha, you rogueGrin.

TwentyCupsOfTea · 22/07/2016 18:33

The Carol of The Cherry Tree might have something to answer for all the confusion I think!

caroldecker · 22/07/2016 18:34

She is a Saint because she is special, not the other way round. To become a saint, you must perform at least 2 miracles which are verified by the Vatican.

MrsHathaway · 22/07/2016 18:36

CofE

We had "joy of their bodily union" in our wedding service iirc. Best of the three possible liturgical options at the time. Cringed until my ribs met to hear that described in front of my granny though.

AFAIK Catholicism is all about guilt. You're not allowed to do anything without feeling guilty about it. That's why there's enough to confess every Saturday.

emotionsecho · 22/07/2016 18:44

Just looked and apparently, though open to debate, Mary's parents were St. Anne and St. Joachim (never heard of him).

DesolateWaist · 22/07/2016 18:46

Mary's parents were Saints weren't they? Is that part of her specialness?

You can only become a saint after you have died, so I understand. They were made saints because they were Mary's parents.

AdjustableWench · 22/07/2016 18:47

Back in the garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were created to be able to have sex without concupiscence (sexual desire). But all that changed when they ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Their act of disobedience lost them their holy nature and after that, all sexual acts were tainted with sin.

So yes, all sexual acts involve the sin of sexual desire (even for procreation) but penetrative sex within marriage with the intention of procreation has a good moral object and this sort of cancels out the sin of sexual desire. (All other sexual acts in any context are unnatural and therefore immoral.)

This is a paraphrase of the official Roman Catholic position, but it's not too different from many Protestant ideas. However, most mainstream Protestant churches allow contraception, which involves complex moral arguments about what outcomes are better for a woman or family.

(I'm also over-invested in how social institutions police sexual behaviour.)

I do hope the OP is all right, and only pregnant if she wants to be.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 22/07/2016 18:47

Love the turn this thread has taken. Especially the 'bottom hat' Grin

Rrross1ges · 22/07/2016 19:08

I can well believe that Mary remained a virgin. I went to see the mystery plays and Joseph was 3 times her age and proper creepy. Also Gabriel and his henchmen were scary fuckers.

emotionsecho · 22/07/2016 19:09

Thanks Desolate, a little reward from God for producing the child who would give birth to his son then.

emotionsecho · 22/07/2016 19:11

The Angels in the old religious paintings always look huge and rather scary.
