EveOnline2016 · 21/07/2016 00:56

Dh has had the snip 6 years ago. I am 10 days late.

Ok I am never late.

I know I'm not pregnant.

OP posts:
NuggetofPurestGreen · 22/07/2016 11:33

Jesus can't have been conceived the normal way because Mary and Joseph weren't married yet! He was annunciated into her by Gabriel.

Rrross1ges · 22/07/2016 11:37

About 7 years after the snip is the key time for it to reverse itself

DH was fixed five years ago. Maybe we should book him in for a service soon to check we're still OK. I do not want a baby for my 45th birthday.

WhatTheActualFugg · 22/07/2016 13:47

So do ladies with vacestemised (new word?) partners continue with other contraception? I sent DH off to be 'done' a few months ago as I thought it his turn as it were. The thought of being faced with another pregnancy terrifies me.

WhatTheActualFugg · 22/07/2016 13:49

Back to Mary, does the original bible (Greek? Latin?) actually, literally, say she was a pregnant virgin? It was that purely a convenient 'modern' translation a few hundred years later?

I came off it. I had been on contraception/TTC or pregnant since I was 18.

After a few months I was having problems and then got diagnosed with pcos. So have gone back on it.

Honestly I feel better for being on it. As I can't face another pregnancy. Dh did look into paying for a yearly test to make sure it hasn't healed. But that became pointless when I started taking contraception.

Between pcos (TTC took ages) contraception and his snip. I think we are covered Grin

In my case, it's because I'm an absolute hag on my own hormones. I started on the pill years before I was sexually active. It isn't just a contraceptive: the contraceptive effect was a useful side effect Grin

After about seven years on "natural" hormones (ha) during pg and bf, I take that lovely little pill like it's the elixir of life.

Smidge001 · 22/07/2016 14:58

I don't understand this immaculate conception thing or the virgin birth anymore. Confused Blush. I've read about it on Wikipedia and read the posts here but I still don't understand it. I feel I need a dictionary to look up most of the words in the explanation. That'll teach me for never having gone to church. I'm fairly bright in other respects, honest.

Can anyone explain it in words of 2 syllables (using words that aren't purely meaning something from the bible?).

PS - OP has vanished so I think we're fine to continue the thread derailment!

DesolateWaist · 22/07/2016 15:00

Sex isn't a sin.

Well that's taken all the fun out of it then.

MrsHathaway · 22/07/2016 15:02

I found this explanation quite useful. It focuses more on why the explanation was needed and where it came from, than any biology Wink

And it confirms my suspicion that it was a bit of an "um, well GOD DID IT" explanation to shut people up centuries ago, which doesn't exactly fit with my ideas of maintaining a questioning faith.

Goingtobeawesome · 22/07/2016 15:02

DH had the snip ten years ago. I still did three tests when I was nearly three weeks late.

Cross-posted, but this made me snort.

Goingtobeawesome · 22/07/2016 15:03

Hadn't cheated btw

DoinItFine · 22/07/2016 15:34

2 syllable word explanation:

Since Adam and Eve disobeyed God and were put out of the Garden of Eden, all people have been born in sin.

Mary was conceived without the stain of sin on her soul. Because she was special. Her parents did get to have a shag, but the foetus was very holy.

Jesus is God's son and was conceived when God put him straight into Mary's womb. Mary did not have sex with God.

DoinItFine · 22/07/2016 15:35

It's a sin if you're not married?

Or divorced?

Or gay?

Or using contraception?

Owllady · 22/07/2016 15:40

God was definitely involved with this. The posters name is even Eve, I'll bet my bottom hat her husband is called Adam

Owllady · 22/07/2016 15:43

My bottom hat...Oh dear! That's a cross between betting my hat and my bottom dollar

DoinItFine · 22/07/2016 15:49

Will you eat your bottom hat if you are wrong?

Owllady · 22/07/2016 15:51

:o I'll get Adam to do it

I don't. I figured the surgeon's rusty shears did enough damage. I'll just have to abstain until after the menopause.

DoinItFine · 22/07/2016 16:07

LOL

He will find easily on the hat tree of knowledge.

BastardGoDarkly · 22/07/2016 16:12

Disregarding Jesus's heritage.

Was he asking in a ... do you think the snips failed?...kinda way?

TwentyCupsOfTea · 22/07/2016 16:27

Ok I always thought that Mary and Joseph DTD and THEN Angel Gabriel told her she was pregnant with gods son? As in God's essence was somehow inside Joseph's sperm?
Always imagine Joseph being half pissed off/half grateful that Mary's dad wasn't gonna take him outside!

WhatTheActualFugg · 22/07/2016 16:36

I'm no historian (can you tell?!) but I just don't believe that whilst the Romans were buggering each other (and their children) all over town, that anyone would be at all bothered that Mary was preggers before marriage.

Surely this was made up / interpreted as such later on?

Have I completed misunderstood Mary Beard?

DoinItFine · 22/07/2016 16:44

Lads, there's a Protestant on the thread.

UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 22/07/2016 16:45

The bible (or at least the King James English translation) is pretty clear that Mary was a literal virgin.

"When his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost."
And when the news of her conception is announced to Mary.
"Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?"

Joseph does not sleep with Mary until after Jesus is born.
