Just been announced that Michael Gove is not going to endorse Johnson and is going to run as leader himself.

I reckon Boris is going to be right pissed off.

Who would you chose to be leader?

This is all a big game isnt it? "Accidentally" leaked mails, surprise speeches. BJ and Gove have done a deal to get Theresa May in as they know she is the only one untainted enough by the Brexit fiasco to be taken seriously in the negotiations. No doubt cushty positions await them.

Lweji · 01/07/2016 08:37

That would only make sense if
A) Boris was a credible candidate
B) they were the only ones running.

That sounds likely.

originalmavis · 01/07/2016 09:17

Of course it's a game. It's politics!

Margrethe · 01/07/2016 09:24

I find it hard to believe that TM has done a deal with BJ and MG. Why should she? I'd be amazed if she stepped aside in 2020 to let BJ swan in. Frankly, I cannot see the electorate allowing it anyway. I would be angry, and I would find it illegitimate. Surely I am not the only one.

I don't think MG stands a chance, but at least he put himself forward. I don't understand why BJ couldn't keep running even if MG was going to run against him. If BJ pops back up when the job looks "easy," I will remember that he ran when it looked tough. I think BJ knows that too.

CFSKate · 01/07/2016 09:25

Margrethe - I can't see why May would accept a deal like that and indeed the article says she immediately dismissed it. Maybe just desperation from the Johnson supporter, to try anything.

Margrethe · 01/07/2016 09:27

Ah thanks, I haven't read the article.

ZansForCans · 01/07/2016 09:32

Yes it's all a game, but totally shafting the entire country as collateral damage in your jostle for power is taking it a bit far...

Theresa May is the polar opposite of BoJo in every way – I can't imagine she'd strike a deal to stand down to make way for him (and hey, look how well that ended last time). Though I guess she might have done a deal with Gove – he shafts Boris and gets him out of the way, she gives him home secretary.

Milanisabadman · 01/07/2016 10:19

Arsene Wenger...contract with Arsenal permitting

Milanisabadman · 01/07/2016 10:23

Sorry, getting my Europe exit scenarios mixed up...

areyoubeingserviced · 01/07/2016 10:24

Truly don't believe that TM had a deal with BJ.

AdrenalineFudge · 01/07/2016 11:03

I also doubt Theresa May made a deal with Boris - there's nothing in it for her. Yes she's probably the least covered in shit at the moment but it's no secret that Gove is viewed by many as less than vermin. The road to Number 10 for her is practically paved with diamonds and unicorns. She also comes across as quite a formidable woman. More power to her shoulder pads imo.

Thymeout · 01/07/2016 11:05

No - he WANTED a deal with May, but she turned him down. It's only a rumour. I don't believe it because why on earth would she agree to step down?

The Gove camp say he was offering jobs in his future cabinet in return for support. 100 jobs and he'd promised them to 300 MP's. He promised Angela L she would be Chancellor. She wanted it in writing. He 'left behind' the letter he was meant to give her in his office - oops, silly me - so she declared she would stand for the leadership herself.

upthegardenpath · 01/07/2016 13:04

Oh god.

NewLife4Me · 01/07/2016 15:08

God help us all.

JudyCoolibar · 01/07/2016 15:17

This is gettiong more and more like a House of Cards scenario. The trouble is, Gove comes over as infinitely less competent a politician than Francis Urquhart, infinitely less charismatic, but just as twisted and dishonest.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2016 15:41

The energy & resources of both major parties are 100% occupied with their Game of Thrones / fighting like rabid ferrets in a sack.
They have no idea what else to do.

Because of this gross dereliction of duty, there is a very dangerous political vacuum which lets the thugs on the street feel they can do what they want.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 01/07/2016 15:48

You know the opposite of nature abhors a vacuum?

It's the far right adores a power vacuum.

This is how dictators get elected. They promise to put an end to this sort of shit.

rookiemere · 01/07/2016 16:00

I can't believe it was only a few weeks ago we were laughing at those funny Americans for having Trump as one of their candidates.

Now look at us, we must be the laughing stock of most countries, both main political parties in the most ridiculous and public forms of disarray , one of the Great British countries off trying to negotiate separate terms with the EU whilst still in GB. You couldn't make this stuff up.

And yes meanwhile apparently zero interest from the main parties in addressing the root cause of what got us here in the first place and what's leading to civil unrest on the streets.

pigsDOfly · 01/07/2016 16:34

I'm still at the stage of sighing with relief that Boris Johnson is not going to be our next PM, but Gove? Please not him.

And oh look, on the other side of the commons there's Corbyn, the slimy racist toerag clinging onto his bit of power by his fingernails and refusing to budge back by a bunch of thugs.

Back stabbing in the (not) government, overt racism being tolerated and encouraged by many on our streets and condoned by certain MPs. No one is making plans, the country is rudderless, we're in a bloody awful mess and there's nobody in government with the wit or intelligence to sort it out; and anyway they're all too busy infighting and trying to get a foot hold on the power ladder to worry about actually running the country.

We're up shit creek and some idiot's lost the paddle. It's like the last days of the Roman Empire.

You're right NewLife4Me. God help us all.

pigsDOfly · 01/07/2016 16:38

*backed by a bunch of thugs

daisychain01 · 01/07/2016 17:41

Incredible to think that we can't even rustle up a credible government, from a UK population somewhere north of 66 million people Grin

Destinysdaughter · 01/07/2016 17:46

Makes me feel like it's easy to understand why people want a strong leader at times like this and that's how demagogues get elected.

Lweji · 01/07/2016 19:15

Incredible to think that we can't even rustle up a credible government, from a UK population somewhere north of 66 million people

Mostly because the non-narcisist types don't put themselves forward, maybe?

ForalltheSaints · 01/07/2016 19:18

Still delighted Boris cannot be Prime Minister in a few weeks time.
