to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

YANBU if it doesn't work for you, but 50 is not a long commute!

A1Sharon · 28/06/2016 19:15

Holy shit!
That's not a commute, that's just going to work.
15 min walk? A whole 15 mins or do you need rest breaks?
Toughen up!
Genuinely cannot believe you think 50 mins is hard.

Sounds pretty reasonable for a commute into London! I used to have that within zone 2 (Putney to Great Portland St).

MrsPatterson2014 · 28/06/2016 19:17

50 minutes isn't really long in London.

50 minutes lol

A1Sharon · 28/06/2016 19:18

I've actually had to re-read your post to check I wasn't getting it wrong.
Do you walk anywhere OP? The way you say it is so faaaarr from the nearest tube-15mins!!
Here was my trip aged 18 to my job. At 6.30 am.
Walk 10 mins to bus.
Bus 30 mins.
30 min walk.
It never occurred to me to think that was hard.

DerelictMyBalls · 28/06/2016 19:18

50 minutes is not a long commute.

MatildaTheCat · 28/06/2016 19:19

Confused Unless you can secure a job which includes a London waterside penthouse I would suggest that 50 minutes' travel is a very, very reasonable, indeed easy commute for a job you love.

Have you asked your mum for a lift? Hmm

HairyMoose · 28/06/2016 19:19

I would find that a very long commute especially using public transport. The walking isn't too bad as its good exercise but would be too much for me in winter. It would be very cold. But you are earning well so it seems a good compromise I guess.

EasternDailyStress · 28/06/2016 19:19

I live in a small village and have to commute into the nearest city to work. Mine is a 25 min drive then a 25 min walk. I don't even consider that very long. Is it just the Tube element that's bad? If so, why not look for a comparable job that you could get to by overground/bus instead.

Lovelongweekends · 28/06/2016 19:19

A 50min commute is nothing - it used to take me longer than that to get to school!

nonline · 28/06/2016 19:19

I was thinking it sounds long, but in reality my walk to work is half an hour and I used to have a 40min bus ride plus walking to and from bus.

If Tube is regular (so you are not waiting for ages for a train) it doesn't sound so bad.
My OH has a fifteen minute drive, but of course it's much longer than that in rush hour.

Do you have something to occupy you on train? Can you cycle (even to/from work station)?

Hensintheskirting · 28/06/2016 19:19

What they said. 50 mins in London is a good commute.

Misnomer · 28/06/2016 19:20

It's really not a long commute at all, especially not for a well paid job that you really like.

Gardencentregroupie · 28/06/2016 19:20

Agree with everyone else, 50 minutes into London is nothing at all unless you've forgotten to tell us you have mobility issues and 40 minutes walking a day leaves you in agony unable to function (serious not sarcastic, if you do have issues then fair enough). Boris bike or folding bike to the office would cut down the last leg to about 5 minutes anyway.

Squiff85 · 28/06/2016 19:20

The 50 minute commute is all relative.

I wouldn't want to commute 50 mins, my job is 10 minutes from home and suits me perfectly. Much more than that and it wouldn't be worth my time/the money - I work around school hours.

If you hate the commute OP then perhaps can you look for something nearer home?

ohidoliketobe · 28/06/2016 19:22

I don't live in London. I don't consider myself to have a long commute. I can do it in 25 mins no traffic, up to 45 at rush hours (flexible working) plus 10 min walk from car park to office. And that's driving, at least on the tube you can read a book/ websites whatever to pass the time.
From what I've heard from friends living there I think 50 mins door to door is brilliant for London!

iwouldgoouttonight · 28/06/2016 19:24

While I agree with others that 50 mins isn't a long commute, especially in London, I also hate commuting so I get where you're coming from. I actually moved out of London for this reason as I didn't like having to travel so much to do anything.

I'm very lucky that I now live near a city and have a 15 min cycle to work, but I realise that is very unusual. I know people who do 1.5 hours drive each way every day. I couldn't do that personally.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 28/06/2016 19:24

50 minutes is not long. I do a 90-odd mile a day round trip in the car, so I don't even get to read on a train! I love my job though, so to me it's worth it. I've done longer commutes where the job wasn't worth it; those were soul destroying.

You could get a bike for the bits where you're not on the train I suppose. Have some good books/crossword/episodes on your tablet etc.

KC225 · 28/06/2016 19:25

1.30 hr (without tube delays or traffic, roadworks etc) last full time job in London pre kids. 50 minutes is good for London and worth it for a good job

Destinysdaughter · 28/06/2016 19:25

FFS an hour plus commute is normal in London!!

oldlaundbooth · 28/06/2016 19:26

Short commute, really OP.

ThisisMajorTomtoGroundControl · 28/06/2016 19:27

50 minutes is nothing. Takes me an hour just to get the kids to infant school before I think about getting to work.
