to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

It's really not that long. When I was your age my commute was 90 minutes each way. Use the time on the tube and the walk productively, get yourself some audiobooks.

freshmint · 28/06/2016 19:27

Just think, you are getting 40mins of cardio exercise every day as well. No need to go to the gym. Win win

NikiSaintPhalle · 28/06/2016 19:27

That's minimal for London. I no longer live there but my commute now from the country to the city where I work takes the best part of an hour - walk, bus, walk at other end - or about 25 minutes in the car and a walk of ten minutes. I have colleagues (we are academics) who commute more than two hours to our department.

EastMidsMummy · 28/06/2016 19:27

50 minutes for a GREAT job? YABU.

hotdiggedy · 28/06/2016 19:28

A few years ago my journey involved this: Get up at 6am, drop youngest child to childminder at 7.10am (leaving home at 7am) then walk/run to the bus for about 15 mins. Hope bus wasn't going to be late. Bus ride for around 20 mins then walk to work for around 30 mins. Repeat on the way home. each journey was a rushed and tiring journey of between 1 hour and 1hr 15mins. If I had a car it could have been done in less than half an hour. So I was out from 7am til around 5.30 pm. It was a killer. Your journey doesn't sound too bad really, especially considering you start at 9, are young and don't have any dependents.

JudyCoolibar · 28/06/2016 19:28

You'd have to be insane to give up a fantastic job with a good salary because of a 50 minute commute. Mine is 15 minutes walk to the station, train journey 30 minutes, bus journey 20 minutes, walk to office 5 minutes. I don't have a problem with it: the walk is a good chance to get some exercise, and I catch up with reading on the train and bus. I also love the bit of the bus journey that involves going over Waterloo Bridge, because the view is wonderful. Given that you must live in or near London, you'd struggle to get a decent job which doesn't involve some sort of commute of that nature.

If the walk is that dreadful, can you get a bus from the tube station to your office?

Zarah123 · 28/06/2016 19:29

I hear you OP. I did the commute to London for a few years (50 minutes on a good day) but now have a 10 minute commute.

It was necessary for me to do the commute jobwise and I do miss being in the hub of things every day, but I love my 10 min commute now.

I would say stick at it until you are ready to move on in your career.

PUGaLUGS · 28/06/2016 19:30

50 mins is not long.

SirChenjin · 28/06/2016 19:31

Short commutes are lovely, but for a great job and no drop off to childcare etc 50 mins is totally doable and well worth it imo.

Daytona79 · 28/06/2016 19:31

50 mins is nothing I live in ne Scotland and I'm at least 1.5 - 2 hours depending on traffic

JudyCoolibar · 28/06/2016 19:31

You may struggle to get an alternative job anyway. If I were your prospective employer, I would worry about your sticking power and capacity to work if you were prepared to give up on a fantastic job after a couple of months for this reason.

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/06/2016 19:32

FFS.

50 mins is really nothing to complain about.

choppolata · 28/06/2016 19:33

That is a very short commute for London! Do you honestly think you can get a better position with a shorter commute? Most of us commute because the jobs we want don't exist in the areas we want to live in.

hmmmum · 28/06/2016 19:34

A 50 min commute is normal, especially in London. Even when I lived in Edinburgh I commuted 45min to work. Many people commute that much and more every day to jobs they don't even like.
But some commutes are harder than others especially if you're in a very squashed tube. Do you have flexible hours so you could avoid some of the crush?

DropZoneOne · 28/06/2016 19:34

50 mins for a great job is absolutely worth it. I did a job for a year that had a 2 hour each way drive. That wasn't worth it.

Crikey, I live in the provinces and work from home and even I think YABU.

Lara2 · 28/06/2016 19:36

50 minutes really isn't a long commute, especially as you're getting a lot more money. I'm lucky to live and work in the same town, but if I have to go to neighbouring towns for training, just getting out of my town can take 30-40 minutes by car - longer by public transport. Then add on the journey to wherever I'm going. What is a 45 minute journey in the middle of the day can easily be almost 2 hours during commuter times.
You're only in your twenties - a 15 minute walk is nothing!

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 28/06/2016 19:36

I went for a job interview today. Minimum wage service role. If I get it my journey is going to look like thirty minutes on the train then a twenty minute cycle/thirty minute walk up a big hill. YABU.

TheClacksAreDown · 28/06/2016 19:36

That is a perfectly normal London commute

Goingtobeawesome · 28/06/2016 19:37

Better than a shit job with a five minute "commute." Hmm.

spankhurst · 28/06/2016 19:38

I commute 45 minutes to an only OK job.

oblada · 28/06/2016 19:40

It's a great commuting time! If you think this is long then maybe you need to think about working from home? As otherwise not many jobs will be nearer really. A good job with that commute is definitely a 'keeper' !:) my commute is about 45mins to 1hour drive and I consider it very reasonable. If I could walk in there itd be even better.

RiverTam · 28/06/2016 19:40

That's a perfectly normal London commute! Possibly because I'm used to it, but I would hate to live too close to work, I like the divide and the way the journey gives you a chance to move from 'home' you to 'work' you.

Herschellmum · 28/06/2016 19:41

Hey, I think if you are enjoying the job then it may be something you have to learn to love. How about reading on the tube, or if that's not possible, audio books? I actually learnt to love my driving to and from work because I would listen to audio books while travelling and couldn't wait to hear what happened next. Perhaps that is a bit sad, but try and find something you can do with that time so it feels more productive than just going to work.
