to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

hahaha my dad used to do a 2 1/2 hour each way commute before they electrified the lines down here, including 20 mins on a bike to the station

redexpat · 28/06/2016 20:17

Could you cycle? Are there less obvious routes that might be easier?

Shouldwestayorshouldwegonow · 28/06/2016 20:18

You can't call 50 mins a commute you lunatic! Grin

Good grief most people travel that far and further to work am sure.

You are very lucky

GerdaLovesLili · 28/06/2016 20:18

Yup! That's normal.

PinkBuffalo · 28/06/2016 20:21

OP, I think if youve only been doing it a couple of months and you're not used to it, you need to give yourself a bit longer to adjust to this new routine.
You love the job, so give yourself a chance to get used to it a bit more and then re-analyse. When I have started somewhere new, it is always tiring so you maybe feeling it more anyway Smile

honeylulu · 28/06/2016 20:21

1 hour 40 mins commuting a day is nothing! Wait until you have children to fit into the equation.

My commute is 1 hour 15 mins each way. I love the chance to read and daydream without small people climbing my legs.

Tiredbutfuckingfine · 28/06/2016 20:21

It's not that long to commute in London- but the route you take can affect your happiness and wellbeing!
I used to have the misfortune of taking the central line to work. It's too busy to get on for a few trains, it's a scrum to then get on, you're pressed up against strangers, it's sweaty, aggressive. I had to get it last week in rush hour and I wanted to cry.
Even if it makes your commute longer I'd suggest trying a different route. Also if you had a massive payrise, can you get a taxi!?

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 20:22

I could cycle the last bit to the office when the weather is not horrible I suppose. That would bring the commute down to 40 mins I reckon.

I live in a village and drive 40 mins to work I think that is a dream - another 10 mins wouldn't bother me at all
Some days when I am out and about visiting clients I start off my day with a drive of up to 90 minutes often followed by a 10 minute walk depending on parking
ExDH had a 2-2.5 hour commute every day once - that I could not do as it meant leaving home at 5.30am and not returning till 7.30
Only you can decide though

Dontanalyseit · 28/06/2016 20:23

I don't live that far from work but it takes me up to 50 minutes because I drive across a city in rush hour.

I used to live in London and the average commute was way longer than that.

I am amazed at the long commutes some people have to my place of work especially when we have a late night but some people don't seem to mind. It depends on your perception and what you're comfortable with I suppose.

greatbigwho · 28/06/2016 20:24

A sub-1 hour commute in London was always my dream.

My worst was almost an hour on the picc line, Heathrow branch. Never got a seat and had to fight with suitcases.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 28/06/2016 20:25

It takes me 10 mins to the CM for the kids, then 50 mins from there to work so an hour each way, sometimes slightly longer with traffic and we are in rural East Anglia! 😂

EllsTeeth · 28/06/2016 20:26

Under an hour for a London commute is great OP. Presumably the job is in Central London and you couldn't get similar nearer home? My commute into central London takes around 1h 15 mins (admittedly part time now) which is considered good to average by most of my colleagues/ friends. If it's a great job you just need to get used to it I think. I used to have a 5 minute walk commute when I lived in central London but gave that up when I swapped my flat for a family house! I don't love it but it's normal!

Acornantics · 28/06/2016 20:27

It's under an hour, so not too long by today's standards, but if it's not suiting you then it's absolutely fine to express that.

I gave up a long commute when DCs were born, often 22 miles by car took 2 hours in the morning and 40 mins home after a 10hr shift.

These days I work less than a mile from home in a job I love...happy days!

Mov1ngOn · 28/06/2016 20:27

I'd hate it
More than about a 15min drive and people tend to move closer to work (or did when houses were cheaper here!). 45 mins would be the next county and several towns across so I know v v few people that would go that far.

However that's outside of London
Its one of the reasons we moved out of London as I consider 2 hours a day commuting ridiculous. Depends on he package tbough-if it's amazing job you wouldn't get outside of Londonderry it may well be worth into you!

BeardMinge · 28/06/2016 20:27

You have a pretty standard London commute. Alternatively you could sign up for free cycle training, get a bike, and ride. That way you get a decent amount of exercise, save money, and avoid a packed tube.

I am almost twice your age and cycle from Tottenham to Westminster. It takes the same amount of time (40mins) as public transport but has all the benefits I mentioned above. I also have to factor in dropping off dd at the childminder. I don't feel hard done by or that I have a tough commute at all.

AppleSetsSail · 28/06/2016 20:28

Not to pile in on you OP, but 50 minutes is great for London. Our house is 40 minutes to Canary Wharf and this has the estate agents falling over themselves with glee.

But, the tube is truly horrible. I suggest you try to work staggered hours so you can avoid the crush. Ugh.

Queenbean · 28/06/2016 20:28

I do about the same which is remarkable for London!

EllsTeeth · 28/06/2016 20:32

Forgot to mention I have a folding bike so cycle both ends of the train. Could you get a folding bike and cut down the length of your tube journey? I'd far rather cycle than get the tube (which is why I bought the bike).

foursillybeans · 28/06/2016 20:32

50 mins commute is nothing I'm afraid. I can see why it bothers you when you finish at 6pm though.

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 20:33

applesets my house is 5 mins away from Canary Wharf and I really wish I worked there but there are no jobs in my field in Canary Wharf (creative industry).

Sad

A 50 minute commute, a job you like and a home you own is like the London holy grail isn't it?! I'm sorry OP, but I think you've got it made.

parallax80 · 28/06/2016 20:33

Paradoxically I stayed in London to cut down on commuting because I have to rotate around different hospitals for several years and the density is so much higher in London. I can cycle most places in under an hour and I hate the tube with a passion, so I usually still have the motivation even if the weather is pants.

parallax80 · 28/06/2016 20:33

Er. So, YABU - get a bikd

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 20:33

(sorry I meant my place!)
