to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

My son has a longer commute than that to get to school, most of the time walking.

Ameliablue · 28/06/2016 20:02

Good jobs are hard to come by and under an hour is not a long commute.

petitdonkey · 28/06/2016 20:03

I remember living in Chester and a job came up in Warrington, I said 'no way am I travelling 45mins to work every day'…. then I moved to London and it was an hour!! Anything under an hour in London is brilliant.

We now live in Kent and my DH works in Newcastle….

XiCi · 28/06/2016 20:05

Some people are just never happy, either that or expect everything handed to them on a silver platter. I imagine the majority of people in the UK have a 50 minute commute. And a 15 minute walk is not far from the station. Christ, there are some lazy fuckers around.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/06/2016 20:05

Looks like a pretty unanimous YABU. Be glad you don't have to drive so you can use the time wisely. DH commutes 1.5hrs each way (Surrey to Shoreditch) and reads, podcasts, watches shows I don't like, works etc, that way it is not wasted time.

PurpleRainDiamondsandPearls · 28/06/2016 20:05

That's very standard for most people in my town which has recently become commutersville. I think 45 mins to an hour is standard. YABU IMO.

Sallystyle · 28/06/2016 20:06

50 minutes seem long to me, but it takes me 10 mins max to drive to work or a two minute walk to the bus stop.

jobrum · 28/06/2016 20:06

My morning commute takes 30 mins, 45 if I'm taking dd to nursery and my return home 50. Few minutes to the bus, 20 minutes walk from bus to office. If the journey is a hassle fair enough but its a pretty averagectime.

BurstMyBubbles · 28/06/2016 20:07

Get a cheap bike you can leave locked at the station for your last bit & that could cut ten mins off?

ApocalypseSlough · 28/06/2016 20:08

My children have a longer commute.

Cheby · 28/06/2016 20:08

YABU I'm afraid. Anything sub 60 mins is basically living the dream in London. I used to commute 75-90 mins each way on public transport with a baby/toddler in tow.

If you can find something closer that you like then great, but 50 minutes is not a long commute. Make the time your own; read, listen to stuff. I have a friend who learned two foreign languages during her commutes over a few years.

NewLife4Me · 28/06/2016 20:10

I can't imagine having a job that takes that long to get to. It's almost 2 hours on top of your working day.
I know some people spend all day working and travelling to work, but they're nuts. Grin
If it's not for you, no matter what people say it won't help.
Couldn't even begin to imagine this in winter, so bleak.

blueskyinmarch · 28/06/2016 20:11

That is nothing for a commute anywhere, never mind London. Get a grip OP!

RuggerHug · 28/06/2016 20:13

My commute is 50 mins to an hour, for barely above minimum wage, not even in the UK so nowhere near London. Leave if you want but I wouldn't expect any sympathy from people if you tell them why.

PinkBuffalo · 28/06/2016 20:13

50 mins is great for London!
I'm often over an hour on what should be a 40 min drive!

PinkBuffalo · 28/06/2016 20:13

And should add I'm definitely not in London

FWIW my DD lives in London and CHOOSES to walk 45 minutes to her work (then back again) rather than getting the bus. Good for her health/fitness and time to think and reflect. Maybe try to use your commute productively?

Ondasp · 28/06/2016 20:14

I am sorry if I offended anyone with my post, I did not think it would be such a sensitive topic.

No this is not a reverse nor a wind up. I genuinely think spending nearly 2 hours of my day commuting is quite draining. I am not from London so perhaps I am not used to this idea yet. I think IDEALLY up to 30 mins commute would be pretty good, 40 mins would be okay but anything over 40 is a bit too much. Of course we don't live in an ideal world and we must accept some compromises.

A good chunk of my commute involves extremely crowded trains, perhaps that is why I find it so unpleasant.

lenibose · 28/06/2016 20:14

DH commutes within London with one Tube change and we live/work pretty close to the Tube on either end and even then door to door it's 40 minutes.
My commute: 5 mins walk to the bus. Wait for bus to take me to the nearest rail/Tube station (I take the commuter rail out of London). So all in all a good 15-20 minutes. Then what I think is a quick 20 min train journey and a 5 min walk. So about 45 minute commute and I think it is absolutely fabulous! And I have a child who goes to school as well. I think you're in for a world of pain if this is too much now.

YABU - that's London for you. I used to have a 50 minute commute when I lived in London. I now have a 10 minute cycle ride. I really miss being able to read on the Tube! The was real me-time.

MargeryFenworthy · 28/06/2016 20:15

Man up. That's an easy journey.

whois · 28/06/2016 20:15

Ah ha ha ha HA!

50 mins door to door is a fab commute!

Anyway, there has been some research that anything up to an hour is actually a good thing - something to do with work home separation and thinking time.

Libitina · 28/06/2016 20:16

In rush hour my commute, by car, is around the same length of time as yours OP. This is going across a small Midlands town.
