to think a great job may not be worth a 50 min commute?

I started a new job in London a couple of months ago. The job is great, fantastic company, great office, awesome team, really good money (+60% compared to my last position), nice benefits. A dream job.

The only downside is that it takes me 50 mins to get there from where I live Sad

The commute is: 5 mins walk - 30 mins on tube with one change - 15 mins walk (the office is faaaar from the closest tube station).

I work ft Mon to Fri 9-6, regular hours. I am in my late 20s, own my place with DH (so I can't move) and I don't have DC yet.

I really dislike this commute. I love the job but I am starting to think it may not be worth it.

AIBU to doubt whether a great job is worth a 50 mins commute?

OP posts:

I live in a town and to get a decent job needed to travel to the next town, across country. 20 mile drive took 40 minutes in the morning, early start but upwards of an hour in the evening, through rush hour. Getting stuck behind a tractor or cows could add 10 minutes or so. It's normal, OP.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 28/06/2016 19:42

I didn't like doing a 50 min commute but that was a fairly rural drive. I kept thinking of the hours it added up to. My life is nothing like yours though. I live where I grew up and everything seems to be done in a smaller scale (Including pay!)

FurryLittleTwerp · 28/06/2016 19:44

What do you dislike about the 50 minute commute in particular?

I must admit I would find getting home at 7pm every night a bit much, as I do all the cooking. When I have had late finishes I've tended to use a slow-cooker, or reheat stuff made another day.

RubyGoat · 28/06/2016 19:45

I "commute" (specifically, I walk) 30 minutes to a job I really don't like. For only slightly above minimum wage.

sparechange · 28/06/2016 19:45

Is this a reverse? Someone you work with is kicking up over a perfectly normal and easy commute?
DH and I both have an hour commute and we consider ourselves relatively lucky because it is a 25 min walk and a 35 min bus (me) or tube (him)

Buy yourself a Fitbit and you'll start viewing the walk a lot more positively

1Potato2 · 28/06/2016 19:45

It's quite reasonable for London

MurphysChild · 28/06/2016 19:46

FFS are you serious? At least an hour was a normal commute for me in West Yorkshire which was walk to car on drive, drive to city, get out of car and walk to office two mins away. DD walks 20 mins to station, 25 on train, 25 walk at the other end. Eight hour shift in her feet then the same in return. This is North Yorkshire, not the city of London.

Get a grip.

Figgygal · 28/06/2016 19:47

That is not a long commute for a great job!!

Flashbangandgone · 28/06/2016 19:47

Yabu.... Unless there are issues that make the 50 minute commute impossible or genuinely unbearable, you'd be crazy to give it up. I suspect it's a reverse too!

228agreenend · 28/06/2016 19:48

My son has a shorter commute to school.

You will find the more you do it, the quicker it will seem.

That's not a commute to London, that's a commute within London, ff!

Buy a step tracker and think of the benefits of a 20 minute walk every morning and night.

OP, you are far too young to be talking like this - my mum's 86 and she wouldn't think that was a long commute!

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2016 19:51

50 mins commute, 9-6 regular hours for a well paid London job that you like and own your own home in your late 20s within reach of your well paid London job that you like with regular and reasonable hours?

You have it very easy compared with almost everyone and would be extremely lucky to find anything with shorter home to office travel and similar pay and benefits. The only thing I can suggest is that you get a grip see if it is possible to work from home one or two days per week to reduce the number of times you have to do your epic commute.

Runningupthathill82 · 28/06/2016 19:52

This must be a reverse! I used to do a 2hr commute each way, which was a bit much, so my next jobs were both an hour's commute each way. Which didn't feel like much!
All Oop North too, so I can't imagine why on earth you think 50min is a lot in London. Most of us who use the m62 each day sit in unmoving traffic for far longer than that, I'm sure!

ImperialBlether · 28/06/2016 19:52

I met a woman who lived in Cambridge and cycled to the station (a few miles) then got the train to London and wrote a novel while she was on the train, too, then cycled to work when she got off. And she was older than you! Get a grip.

WinniePooh101 · 28/06/2016 19:52

Is this a wind up??

A 50 minute commute to London is a GOOD commute!

I live in Surrey, can't afford London and my commute door to door is 1hr 45 mins each way! I hate my commute but I enjoy my job, need the money and need stability if I'm ever going to get on the damn property ladder. I work with lots of people who have 1-2 hour commutes each way. Iy's an accepted norm in London, everyone hates it, but everyone does it.

HermioneJeanGranger · 28/06/2016 19:53

Oh come on, 50 minutes in London at rush hour is nothing!

I'm very lucky - I work five minutes down the road from my house, but I appreciate I am VERY lucky to live where I do. I have co-workers who commute 1.5 hours a day to get to work. In a shop. For just above minimum wage.

Are you the manager and a colleague is whining about their commute?

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 28/06/2016 19:55

Must be wind up.

FolderReformedScruncher · 28/06/2016 19:57

Put headphones on and learn a foreign language on the journey op.

Orwellschild · 28/06/2016 19:57

I'm very lucky my commute is only 40 mins. My last job was 1.25 hours on a bus then a 20 min walk. Which is pretty normal for a London commute. 50 mins is absolutely not a long commute. Op?

1frenchfoodie · 28/06/2016 19:57

As others have said 50 mins is good for London but if you resent the time lost it is worth figuring out how to best use it. Podcasts, your favourite magazines, a good book etc.

For what it is worth my comute to London is 2h each way - bus, train, 2x tubes, short walk. It is not a competition, but just saying.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 28/06/2016 19:57

People on JSA have to apply for jobs 90 mins commute away and I bet they can't say oh, only if it's a good one. 50 minutes is nothing. Read a book, do a crossword, look out the window at the dark tunnels. Plus the walk is good for you.

BigStripeyBastard · 28/06/2016 19:57

Yep, wind up or dickhead......

50 minutes is not a long commute. Especially so if partially on public transport so you can read/listen to music/generally relax. My commute is driving for roughly 1hr 20 in heavy traffic - still not a bad commute for a good job
