Not a discussion on Leave v Remain. That s been done to death.
Now that the decision has been made, and our economy is going to take a massive hit, do you think it is reasonable to ask people to support our own economy now and buy goods which are actually manufactured in Britain?

OP posts:
JassyRadlett · 29/06/2016 22:39

I simply posted a comment to the op.

The thing is, the simple comment was about other posters on the thread. And it's not a terribly long thread, so people might assume you'd read it before posting to belittle those who didn't agree with the OP. And regardless, your comment was pretty nasty about people who might have valid reasons not to be terribly happy with the current situation or OP's suggestion.

I'm assuming where MrsS is from given her comments on this thread only.

user1467101855 · 29/06/2016 22:39

And on a thread about buying British, local means actually Polish?

Ok, so OP meant local French cheese, and local German cars. OF course.

Pull the other one, its got bells on.

HoneyDragon · 29/06/2016 22:40

I will buy British if I think it's the best or best value available. Otherwise no, I won't

Best policy right there.

Apart from MrsS obv, who would be doing Irish.

And Stripey, who shops via constituency.

But in all honesty I don't care as long as you are out shopping, even if your spending less your spending.

Yep, it was OTT, I'd agree with that. Hence my response to you.

But let's not pretend you weren't intending to belittle and insult other posters even if you didn't use their names, eh? Insults everyone's intelligence. Smile

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 22:47

Honestly, it was meant light heartedly towards the OP because I felt sorry for the onslaught she got after trying to be positive.

Oibeer · 29/06/2016 22:50

OP that's not how 'the market' works.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2016 22:52

Ah, I see. Well, I guess the side effect of being lighthearted/cheering someone else up by being quite sneery about other people is that they might get pissed off.

Now, can anyone figure out what the poster talking about the Commonwealth was on about? This Commonwealth citizen wants to know how buying the goods of my homeland will help Britain through economic uncertainty.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 29/06/2016 22:57

Mango, to be called a goody fucker by one poster on one thread may be regarded as a misfortune, to be called a goody fucker by two different posters on two different threads begins to look like carelessness!

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 22:59

What?!
What other thread?

Headofthehive55 · 29/06/2016 23:08

So early indications suggest there was a decrease in retail activity after the result of approx 5%

Clearly people are are holding off spending.

Oibeer · 29/06/2016 23:09

"In the middle of doing cosmetic work to my new house, and have hired local tradesmen for all jobs - all recommended through word of mouth and/or local advertising"

Isn't this what everyone does though? I can't think of anyone who'd hire workmen to do up their house who were located in a different region? Not sure how this is noteworthy in term supporting British business unless user had the right idea.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 23:12

Other user didn't have right idea, so please don't further their agenda any more.

What I meant was local to our local town & surrounding small villages rather than going for the bigger trade companies in the neighbouring cities.

Which country is this sunny spot?

England? Wales? Scotland? Northern Ireland? Gibraltar?

Which wee country are you talking about? I bet it's England!

I'd rather leave you to your own devices, checking labels and buying Japanese cars, as my country voted to remain.

Oibeer · 29/06/2016 23:22

"rather than going for the bigger trade companies in the neighbouring cities."
Either would be British so maybe it's the example that didn't quite fit with what the OP meant. Sourcing local workers is great though. We had an Aussie guy, several English blokes and a couple of brilliant Polish craftsmen working on our house, It had never really occurred to me to think of them in terms of their nationalities but on reflection they were a global, local bunch.

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 23:26

That is exactly what I meant Oibeer.
Thank you!

MangoMoon · 29/06/2016 23:46

MrsSpecter, I'm sorry for my comment earlier which upset you & possibly others.

I genuinely didn't mean to be sneery about people's feelings, including yours.
I was just responding to the OP as I thought she'd had a hard time of it.

I can see how my comment was easily misconstrued and I apologise.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 29/06/2016 23:55

Well done for apologising Mango - very pleased to see you following my example.

BMW6 · 30/06/2016 00:07

Chin up Mangomoon - you are not alone Flowers

TaraCarter · 30/06/2016 00:09

I think the Commonwealth comment may be a purchasing philosophy built in order to justify a taste for New Zealand Pink Lady apples. Grin

Making decisions on counties is fucking ridiculous. Have you folks never heard of "divide and conquer"? You are living examples!

How can you decide someone is unworthy of your business based on the political tendencies of their region? That's as morally weak as any other form of employment discrimination on sex or nationality.

Would you refuse to employ a female taxi driver because you'd read that 60% of female taxi drivers in one sample of taxi drivers couldn't parallel park?

JassyRadlett · 30/06/2016 00:13

Well played, Mango.

Speaking as an Australian we're more than happy to flog you lot some more beef and lamb and minerals. Please buy the minerals.

Just5minswithDacre · 30/06/2016 00:21

Thanks Giddy but the anger is making me feel physically ill.
I just want to DO something constructive - negative emotions just eat me up.

Yes, me too.

Good idea.

LisaMed1 · 30/06/2016 09:50

Sorry, Commonwealth was a bit of a weird one by me based on sleep deprivation built on woolly thinking.

I think my train of 'thought' came from remembering a piece that things like sugar and bananas, produced in Commonwealth countries, were bought at a higher price from places outside the Commonwealth because of the trade rules. If we are going to be in a trade association, I suppose why not be in one that's more diverse and has more links?

I usually think more clearly, I apologise for any offence, I'm normally a clearer thinker, and I'm off to netmums.

MrsSpecter · 30/06/2016 10:24

Apology accepted and one extended to mango in return. Emotions running high.

Yes i'm in NI.
