I have seen so many messages on FB saying that the poorer members of society shouldn't have been allowed to vote.
Because apparently, some members of society aren't capable of making decisions for themselves.
How disgusting and patronising is that?

This is talk from people who are supposedly for the best interests of ALL people.

So how does the labour/lib dem 'ethos' work exactly?

It's good to help people.
As long as you don't ever give them any choice?

Hmm

It's important to stick to facts rather than get caught up in hyperbole. People are becoming hysterical about things that probably won't happen.

YANBU. Working class people have bern told immigrants are to blame for poverty, joblessness and declining standards of living, they believed thay so we valled them racist and ignored them. Last night they punished us for it, and what we need ro do is not become more insulting, we need to build bridges and start addressing the real problems of poorer parts of the country.

As I said up thread I don't believe that Leave voters are either racist or stupid (some of them may be of course, but those that chose to vote that way are a far from homogenous group).

Slightly off topic, what I do find both worrying and depressing is the lack of knowledge that many voters have about the electoral system or about how elections are run. It is clear that many people voting yesterday were completely ignorant in this respect (I'm sure that they were from both sides of the debate). This ignorance appears to have lead to a deep cynicism about the integrity of the ballot but also to some people casting a 'protest vote' which in a straight yes/no poll such as the EU Referendum is ill advised at best. Such lessons should be mandatory in all schools.

Funny, I've seen the opposite - been accused of being a wannabe middle class because I voted Remain!

Splandy · 25/06/2016 10:40

I've found a video of local people's reaction to the news. I can't link it, but if you search bbc Midlands today 'best day of my life' Black Country, it'll come up. They interview four people, each of them mention immigration. 'Best day of my life', 'they'm everywhere now, the poles and that', 'immigrants am taking over' and I think 'go back to their own country' is what the last woman says, I couldn't quite make it out. They are very representative of the people who live here. A lot of the people I know made this decision based on stupidity and racism. A lot of the 'outraged on behalf of the working class' would like this to not be true, but it IS true. Plenty of people chose for exactly those reasons.

I'm as working class as you can get, born to teen parents, lived in a high rise block of flats, became a single, teen parent myself and lived on benefits for a while. I dont sneer at the poor, working class, because that is exactly what I am. People shouldn't pretend that these voters had noble reasons so they can pat themselves on the back for being so liberal and for standing up for the 'salt of the earth' types. It's not sneering to point this out, it's just an uncomfortable truth.

Splandy · 25/06/2016 10:45

I don't think I'm getting my point across very clearly. I'm not wording things well. Middle class people are desperate to try to stand up for the poor, working class, to be seen to be doing the right thing. Most of the people in this area are happy to admit that those are the reasons they voted. They're pleased with what they've done. I actually find the responses which are outraged on their behalf to be far more offensive. It's patronising. They're adults who have vile opinions. They don't get a free pass on that because they're poor.

frothing swivel eyed Remainers

Sorry we can't be cool cucumbers like you and Nigel Farage. Do you trust pencils again now?
