I have seen so many messages on FB saying that the poorer members of society shouldn't have been allowed to vote.
Because apparently, some members of society aren't capable of making decisions for themselves.
How disgusting and patronising is that?

This is talk from people who are supposedly for the best interests of ALL people.

So how does the labour/lib dem 'ethos' work exactly?

It's good to help people.
As long as you don't ever give them any choice?

Hmm

All the Remain voters I have come across are simply in despair about how the poor and vulnerable are going to be hurt by this. I haven't seen any who believe that they shouldn't be able to vote. If you have, I suggest you have a good look at how you come to have cunts as FB friends.

TopazRocks · 24/06/2016 10:28

I and DH are 'poorer members of society'. We both have degrees. We both voted Remain. He is a 'grey voter' pensioner; I am ill and not currently working. We have 2 sons with disabilities.

It's possible we are screwed - especially as I had formed the impression my only hope of getting off the employment scrap heap was to use my degree in European languages in some way! But, heh, fortunately i am a sort of optimistic depressive and I will keep on keeping on.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/06/2016 10:28

Says something about your friends, not the remain voters. I've not seen anything like that.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 24/06/2016 10:29

This is from my FB:

Why? Why aren't people better?
I am ashamed of every other person (almost- turnout wasn't that high) that I share this isle with. I feel contempt for you whatever your reasoning, for you have plunged over 300 million people into darker times.
I cannot explain my anger, my hatred and my bitterness that I have to abide by your stupidity. But unlike you, I shall continue to trust that this one decision doesn't define you as a person and treat you in the same way as the next person. Whomever that may be.

Peppatina · 24/06/2016 10:30

Sssssh it make them feel better to pretend leavers are somehow less than they are.

My two cents:

God the threads on here are depressing.

Chavs, poor, old age, shit job, unintelligent, racist, xenophobic.

Leavers should be ashamed, shouldn't be allowed to vote without an IQ test...it's all over mumsnet.

How the fuck can you consider yourselves enlightened, liberal, tolerant, all these moral things you think you have over people (just because they came to a different conclusion to you.)

You know what? I give up.

But at least don't try to kid yourselves. You don't have the moral high ground here especially not with the attitudes I'm seeing here and on SM.

YOU should be ashamed of yourselves.

(NB- that isn't directed at all remain voters, only those that subscribe to the views above)

TopazRocks · 24/06/2016 10:31

I meant to add the DM did not ask me for my opinion.

MerryMarigold · 24/06/2016 10:34

Virtually all my many FB friends voted REMAIN (or are European) and I've seen none of that saying people shouldn't have voted.

I do think people have been massively manipulated though. And I don't really think such a political and economic decision should have been made by ordinary people, including myself. It's like a doctor saying, "You do the open heart surgery." I vote for people to represent me, people who know what they are doing more than I do. And even though the party I voted for wasn't in power, I trusted them a lot more than the 'general public' who don't know enough to make decisions like this, and can be easily led.

Iloveowls2 · 24/06/2016 10:37

I voted leave and I'm certainly no uneducated. We were in a relationship which wasn't working we tried to talk about it and address the issues but we were met with only very little immaterial movement followed by a statement that we weren't getting anything else. We had the choice of staying for financial short term stability with a controlling bullying partner or leaving which would cause a lot of short term pain to free ourselves to be us in the long term. It might or might not be a good decision but that's where I got to. But don't call me stupid or I'll informed (spent a long time studying European constitutional law and work in a field where I see daily impact of the EU). You made your choice I made mine. The great thing about a democracy is we can express our thoughts (even if they are not the same as yours)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 24/06/2016 10:39

Trade your FB friends idiots in for more
open minded, Educated, and less judgy friends

MerryMarigold · 24/06/2016 10:40

I still think this was a decision for parliament. Oh well.

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 24/06/2016 10:42

This issue is only able to remain divisive if we all collectively allow it to be. If you pride yourself on promoting love, peace, and humanity then strive to respect others choice. Referenda do slow down the pace of change imho (Switzerland) , the accepted idea is voters opt for the status quo.

I think what has happened is the current EU wasn't seen as a stable / status quo choice

musicmaiden · 24/06/2016 10:45

If people are saying that, challenge them. If they keep banging on, delete them. No need to be friends with tossers.

Nearly all of my FB friends were remainers and none of them are saying this at all. General shock and dismay, but nothing about those that voted out.

hackmum · 24/06/2016 10:46

It's quite striking how many people who regard themselves as left-wing and progressive think of working-class people as morons. Hey, racism is really bad but you can be as offensive as you like about people who are poorer than you.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 24/06/2016 10:48

I've seen some particularly disgusting things on my facebook feed this morning. Including but not limited to "Glad to see that 52% of the UK are nasty, racist idiots" and "We stop people voting for the first 18 years of their lives, we should stop them from voting for the last 18 years of their lives"

BathshuaSpooner · 24/06/2016 10:49

Some of the worst comments have been right here on MN...thick, uneducated, old..Not exactly endearing comments from those on the supposed right side of the argument.

I am 100% Remain and so are the vast majority of my FB friends.

I have seen one comment along these lines and I was really shocked and quite disgusted.

I did challenge it. You are right, it is outrageous. But there are going to be dickheads on both sides.

Joshuajosephspork · 24/06/2016 10:51

I voted Remain and so did most of my friends, on Facebook and in real life. I've not seen anything like that, just a lot of sadness and worry.

I think we all appreciate that people had lots of different reasons for voting to leave. Sure, some of them are racist and stupid but you simply can't categorise over half the voting public in that way. I know left wing leave voters who believe that the EU is a bloated capitalist bureaucracy which doesn't have the interests at heart and I know people whose reasons for voting Leave I have no sympathy with at all.

I despair at the name calling and at the tone of debate and of much of the campaign, but we are where we are and we need to move forward and make the best of it.

I had hoped that there could be a civilised attempt to reach understanding but sadly I'm not sure that's possible right now. Many Remain voters need a little time and space to mourn and there is a lot of uncertainty which doesn't help. I'd certainly like to understand people's reasons for voting to leave more clearly - it might make me feel better about the whole thing

Remain voters who resort to name calling and abuse don't help and nor do Leave voters doing the same (especially with a side order of gloating)

Peace out guys

Onward and upward

BuunyChops · 24/06/2016 10:51

All the Remain voters I have come across are simply in despair about how the poor and vulnerable are going to be hurt by this.

Me too; I think you really need to rethink your choice of FB friends.

And the ' poor and vulnerable' voters that I know all say they voted Remain, because they know that the likes of Farage and Boris & cronies couldn't give a flying toss about them or the NHS or safety in basic level jobs or the quality of state schools 'cause they're ok, and if you're not...

Well. . . if you weren't fortunate enough to be born into an already well off family, to have been given a private education, walked into a job in a company owned by one of Mummy/Daddy's family/friends, to have private health care........well fuck you thats your fault, you didn't pick your parents well enough did you. . .

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 24/06/2016 10:53

Oh this is like the Scottish referendum with the overwrought blaming old folk for voting.

Best to disengage if possible when people are very raw. I know I am a bit of a ranter to my DH at times of stress- Thank goodness I didn't grow up sharing every up and down on social media.

IrianOfW · 24/06/2016 10:54

I think it's absolutely disgusting that such a small percentage have forced us to leave the EU with the shitstorm that will cause for all of us.

Kitsa · 24/06/2016 10:54

Maybe don't conflate the comments of a few of your stupid facebook friends with the "labour/lib-dem 'ethos'"?

I think Leave voters made a terrible decision. But not because they are 'poor'...

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 24/06/2016 10:56

I agree such close run votes are a bad idea. Maybe you should have to reach 60 % to validate a huge change of direction.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 24/06/2016 10:57

I haven't seen anything like that. I suppose I wish stupid people weren't allowed to vote, though.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/06/2016 10:59

It really is alwful, on my Facebook feed, those who voted Remain have been deeply unpleasant and nasty, says a lot really!
