I have seen so many messages on FB saying that the poorer members of society shouldn't have been allowed to vote.
Because apparently, some members of society aren't capable of making decisions for themselves.
How disgusting and patronising is that?

This is talk from people who are supposedly for the best interests of ALL people.

So how does the labour/lib dem 'ethos' work exactly?

It's good to help people.
As long as you don't ever give them any choice?

Hmm

Unfortunately the prediction now is a large contraction of our GDP. We've just lost out to France, they are now the 5th biggest economy, not us.
I'd love to believe the optimists but as far as I can see, we'll have all the negatives of the EU trade terms and none of the influence, a smaller economy and far less negotiating power without the EU trade bloc behind us.

Yes the leavers are so uneducated and poor yet they know the difference between racism and xenophobia.

squoosh · 24/06/2016 12:16

My reality is that the UK economy is going to tank and I'm an immigrant that isn't feeling too welcome at the moment.

So forgive me if I don't want to sing Kumbaya with you.

Leavetheblindsdown · 24/06/2016 12:17

A lot of people were conned, and voted very emotionally.
Eg when leafleting for Remain I was told that if we stayed in the EU my child would never get a job or a council house (because the right wing of the Tory party are so keen on building new council houses...), and that there would be no more European football tournaments, because the EU was about to become one super-state with one football team.
They didn't want to accept, let alone look at, a Remain leaflet, because any counter-argument was lies and they wanted to get their country back. Well try getting it back from the Tory party now.

Well said hands - I couldn't bring myself to vote for either campaign, but there is a clear implication that leavers are all uneducated fools. (Someone has even been kind enough to share a graph evidencing their comparative lack of education, with an eye-roll and oh-so-patronizing "quelle surprise" comment.) Ergo, Brexiters are Fucktards.

Looking at the maps, this vote was won in Labour heartlands. There are hundreds of possible reasons for this. The poorer are more likely to feel the sharp end of immigration - for many it doesn't mean cheap nannies or plumbers, it means that your child can't get in a decent school, you can't get a house and there is a 3 week wait to see a GP. Of course there is a very real debate to be had about whether immigration is the true cause of those problems - and successive low-tax, pro-austerity regimes cannot be irrelevant to the lack of decent services - but they have voted according to their perception. They are being shafted one way or another and lack of decent services is a reasonable concern. To call them ignorant and stupid says more about the Remainers than about those who voted for to leave. Maybe mainstream politicians will start listening to them?

OP YANBU
Can't go onto FB today because of the lamenting Londoners bleating about getting the 'wrong' result, and even trying to get another referendum to get the 'right' result.

Immigrants are more likely to be working and paying tax, and less likely to be claiming benefits. They are mostly young and so less expensive for the NHS. Our aging population of native Brits increases the need for medical and social care, and puts the cost up.

If our country has decided to provide inadequate public services, schools and hospitals, that is not due to the activities of the immigrants, but our decision in choosing our government.

Anyway I am pro-immigration.

2moreminutes · 24/06/2016 12:30

It's quite striking how many people who regard themselves as left-wing and progressive think of working-class people as morons.

That's what has shocked me.
It's a nasty, sneery superior attitude to have.

That's true piglet but it's more about perception than reality. I have a home in a naice town in Wirral - if I can't get in to see the GP, it's usually because the waiting room is full of old dears. My GP's live in a rural community in Lincolnshire - in the same situation, theirs of full of young Eastern European cauli-pickers (and their families). The result is the same - neither of us can see a GP - but one scenario colors views about immigration. We undoubtedly need better public services that reflect demands of the current population rather than whatever-demand-was a decade ago! We don't have that and it impacts the poor (who are also less likely to be highly educated) disproportionately. I see this more as a protest vote by the working class against lots of things - including, but not limited to, immigration.

PigletJohn · 24/06/2016 12:36

Hands,

there are a few, but start here

PigletJohn · 24/06/2016 12:38

and here

I probably have a recent FT link somewhere, but they are firewalled.

Anyway, it's too late now.

LaBelleOtero · 24/06/2016 12:42

Just out of interest, is everyone on here happy with the way immigration has been and would have continued to go if we had remained?

And will continue to go?

Immigration won't miraculously stop because we'll leave the EU. Chances are it will continue at the same rate or higher if we want to continue to trade with the EU. The balance of power is absolutely on their side, and they will set the terms, and they will probably be less generous terms than we had before. Norway has to allow freedom of movement and so will we. And of course, the refugees... Now we wait to see if France still feels inclined to protect "our" border at Calais. it's no secret they they are immensely frustrated with the situation and feel Brits should do more to help. For all we know they may be allowed to walk away in a year or so. And then we'll have to find food and shelter for all the refugees who claim asylum here.

The immigration problem will get worse because of this. I'd bet a tenner on it, but I'm feeling very protective of my money now.

I voted remain and there are a lot of people who are sad and upset, disappointed on my FB feed today. Strangely almost all (except 1) of those who voted leave (and I know a few of them did) are keeping very quiet today. Not seem them post anything except pictures of cats and dogs. We are a very divided country today but the vote Leave was democratic (albeit very close) so we all just have to get on with it. As soon as one of the leavers starts moaning about the cost of things going up or their jobs moving to Germany or France they will get a piece of my mind as I won't have any scruples in saying they brought it all on themselves.

abbsismyhero · 24/06/2016 12:50

im unemployed i voted remain we are better off inside with them pissing out than outside with them pissing in
