To actually hate most things about UK summers

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 14:02

Where do I start?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me.

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run.

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them.

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on.

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads.

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely.

Roll on Autumn. AIBU?

I used to love the summer! I was one of those smug childless people that could while away the hours in a beer garden.... Now I loathe the summer. I spend the days wanting to get my 13mo Dd outside, but then worry about her refusing to keep her hat on, wrestling with her to apply yet more sunscreen, trying to stop her eating gravel/daisies/dandelions. I also worry constantly about her at night because my house is like a sauna.
I bought a baby paddling pool with a little roof on it yesterday, only to find the fucking thing doesn't have a pump with it.
And this year I'm pregnant too which has in turn blessed me with ginormous norks that produce enough sweat to fill the damn paddling pool Angry
I'm excited for September.

NeedACleverNN · 08/06/2016 15:59

Yeah, yeah poor you, you've got a blister! What about poor Mr Mouse and his be-strimmed body? He may have a spouse and 27 kids at home awaiting his return.

'Daddy will be home soon children....I'm sure he just been delayed' said Mrs Mouse as she tried to hide the anxious catch in her voice. Little does she know he's been Flymoed.

Hahaha Grin that is actually brilliant

Heyheyheygoodbye · 08/06/2016 16:00

YABU I hate summer. Big sweaty face. Big sweaty norks. Salad, flies, strappy tops and sandals. Can't sleep properly. Men everywhere with their tops off. Roll on Autumn!

Heyheyheygoodbye · 08/06/2016 16:01

*YANBU that should have been!

Katedotness1963 · 08/06/2016 16:04

I hate summer! I hate the heat. I hate sweating. I hate being shiny. I hate sunscreen, it hurts my eyes. I hate insects. I hate not being able to sleep. I hate the sound the fan makes but turning it off is not an option. I hate sitting in the sun. I hate being asked where we're going for our holidays, nowhere, we can't afford it. I hate that the telly is crap during the summer. I hate televised sports. I hate getting into the hot car. I hate my husband getting credit for barbecuing a few burgers while my afternoon of side dish prep is ignored. I hate ice cream. I hate going to other people's houses to spend the evening drinking warm wine in their garden while being mozzie fodder.

I love cool weather. I love jumpers. I love being cuddled up on the couch, under a blanket, with a good book. I love boots. I love dark nights. I love the cold shock of getting into a chilly bed at night. I love my hot water bottle. I could go on and on...

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 16:10

Love the 'human pic n mix' so true Grin

God this thread makes me happy. I felt so alone before.

I hated British summers because they're not hot enough. I need at least a few days of mid 30s for it to feel like summer. But even though I hate the cold I do miss proper British and European winters.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 08/06/2016 16:13

I'm right with you OP on all counts. Light nights meaning kids take forever to sleep and are awake at stupid o'clock in the morning. Counting down to the longest day (just over a week to go) and then it's free wheeling to autumn.....

PutDownThatLaptop · 08/06/2016 16:14

I hate summer clothes, hate chub rub, walk around with my hand on my head if I have no hat because the line down the middle of my head gets burnt.
I hate gardening and lawn mowing, hate sun cream (in fact am allergic to it), hate hot nights, hate the sound of the pub beer garden two streets away, hate sweaty top lips, hate sweaty back of neck, hate sweaty everything.

SolomanDaisy · 08/06/2016 16:22

I love how moderate the English summer is! There are virtually no days in northern England when it is too hot to do stuff. I live abroad and love coming back in the summer to a guarantee of no crazy heat, no mosquitoes, no need for window shutters.

MrsDoylesTeaParty · 08/06/2016 16:24

I love spring, autumn and winter and there are aspects of summer I love.. I love the smells, flowers, wildlife and summer evenings. I hate the sweatiness, bright sun, feeling like I'm being cooked, can't sleep properly, people speeding around with their loud exhausts! I was saying to DP the earlier how we never hear them in winter, don't they use their cars when it's cold? Grin

1moreglassplease · 08/06/2016 16:29

Not looking forward to a summer of sport so hoping we do have some nice weather so that I can go into the garden and escape.

Do love English strawberries and ice cream though.

Just had an email from Next to let me know that the Autumn directory is on its way next month!

GinAndPhonics82 · 08/06/2016 16:34

I have found my people.
I hate having sweaty norks, and the fact that the kids won't go to bed 'because it's still daytime'.... Sad

Bragadocia · 08/06/2016 16:38

Anything above 20c and I want to retreat to a cool bath with the blinds down. Late spring, early autumn - lovely.

Heatherbell1978 · 08/06/2016 16:39

Is this a thread about a UK summer? Am I missing something coz I didn't think it got that hot? Granted I live in Scotland where people sunbathe if it's 16 degrees.....but even down south it surely doesn't get much beyond mid 20s? I was in Oz a few months ago and it was 40 degrees. That was hot.....

cosmicglittergirl · 08/06/2016 16:42

I never seem to meet people in real life who don't like summet, it's all 'don't be such a misery'. It's too hot, too sticky and I don't know what to wear. I like thick tights, boots and scarves.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2016 16:46

I don't like TV sport so the wall-to-wall TV coverage is good because everywhere else is empty Grin

Not wild about BBQ, as a vegetarian I'm not keen on the smell of cooking meat in the gardens but meh I don't have to eat it.

Don't like the flies, black glossy beetles ,moths, bees, wasps that divebomb every open door or window.

But my No1 Pet Hate - inappropriate expanses of flesh.
Beach, swimming pool, your own garden, the park - yes fine. Wear what you want.
On the bus, in the supermarket, at the shops. No , I don't want to see your sweaty chests and armpits thanks. Put it away.

I've found my people! I too hate summer, give me the middle of winter any day! I have fat thighs so I either have to sweat in trousers or cover myself in lanacane which wears off after 20 minutes if I want to wear a pretty dress as the dreaded thunder thighs rub together.

I hate my stupid colleagues who come to work in stupid flip flops and spend their day flip flopping noisily around the office telling me how lovely it is outside and saying how silly I am to stay inside on my lunch break.

I hate my stupid family and friends who spend all summer saying "oooh I bet you wish you had a garden". No, I don't wish I had a garden, I'm perfectly happy in my maisonette with no garden and no lawn to mow or plants to look after. If I want grass I can walk 5 minutes up the road to the park.

I hate sitting on the bus home sweating every evening so I have to buy more work clothes to make up for not being able to wear them as long as usual.

I hate it when my hands and feet swell up and go all red and blotchy.

I hate having a sweaty back and shouting "don't touch me!" whenever people try and hug me.

I want rain and jeans and cardigans and fluffy blankets and hot chocolate Angry The only good thing about summer is the annoying people all go on annual leave and my washing dries quickly. Other than that it can piss off!

morningtoncrescent62 · 08/06/2016 16:58

Quite so. I adore November, and that lovely hunkering-down feeling you get as the nights draw in. Born to be a hermit, me.

Haste ye to Scotland, all summer-haters. I moved here from southern England about 20 years ago and the summers are so much nicer. Occasionally we'll have a few days above 20 degrees (at which point all the natives complain that it's 'roasting') but on average it's a lot, lot cooler up here. I don't think there have been any unbearably hot days in all the time I've lived here, and only a few where it's been hot enough to feel mildly uncomfortable. I love it! OK, so it's lighter here noticeably later in the evening, but it's not the light I mind so much as the heat, so I'm fine with that.

YY to all the posters who've said they hate the assumption that warm, sunny weather = fantastic sociable time. That's even worse than the heat.

mizuzu · 08/06/2016 17:04

I am a summer liker and spring. Winter depresses me. I love BBQ's

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 17:06

What is it about BBQs that you like Mizuzu?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me - Ok, so this is a crap thing about summer

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run - But you go, sweat it out then have a nice cool shower afterwards. And check the forecast and dress for the weather!

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them - Not that bad, surely?

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on - Do they have to wear them? Mine never really did

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads - Love, love, love a bbq whether it's for 16 of us or just the 4 of us after work

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can - Probably my favourite part of summer. Luckily the kids quite like it too!

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely - Because it is!!!
