To actually hate most things about UK summers

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 14:02

Where do I start?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me.

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run.

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them.

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on.

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads.

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely.

Roll on Autumn. AIBU?

Actually, there is one thing I dislike about UK summers - uncertain weather. I want warm/hot sunny weather every day.

wavingnow · 09/06/2016 23:21

I can't stand the noise it brings from noisy gardens why do people think it's ok to enforce others to have to hear their music, smell the pong from their BBQs etc? The not being able to fall asleep because it's too bright and far too hot then the light creeps round all the sides of the curtains and wakes us all up far too early. The dawn chorus at four in the morning too! I love birds but not being woken by it so early.

NicknameUsed · 09/06/2016 23:26

We don't have noisy neghbours. I can very occasionally hear my next door neighbour's radio playing Classic FM very softly if he is gardening right next to the wall that divides our gardens, but that's it.

Our neighbours on the other side have very occasional barbecues, but they don't bother us and they aren't noisy either.

pearlylum · 10/06/2016 06:29

Same here nickname, I have very quiet neighbours too. Quite radio 4 and the odd hum of a lawnmower, and that's it.

exLtEveDallas · 10/06/2016 06:44

I reckon I would LOVE summer if I was slim and didn't work. I'd waft around in teeny tiny strappy dresses, drink Pimms and laze around on sun loungers.

But being fat and working in the heat makes me very grumpy. So grumpy that when I get home from work I don't want to sit in the garden I just want to fester on the sofa in front of the fan.

Weirdly when I lived in Cyprus I loved the summer - but that's probably because my office was set at a chilly 16 degrees and I wore the same shapeless uniform as everyone else. When I got home (at lunchtime natch) I'd strip off, jump in the pool and drink a brandy sour (or two).

I'm definately retiring to a hotter country - and then I'll love the sun again.

pearlylum · 10/06/2016 06:50

I also love the fact that I can enjoy the efforts of me exercising all year. being able to wear little dresses and skimpy clothes and feeling good about being slim and toned. It makes all those gym classes in the middle of winter feel worth it.

wanderings · 10/06/2016 07:15

YABU. I love "socks off" time of year. The only thing I dislike about the summer are the people who moan about it, although I wish the weather was more certain. I also think it's unfair on teenagers to have to be slogging over exams when it's nice weather outside.

pearlylum · 10/06/2016 07:19

I love socks off too. It's lovely to pad around the garden and house barefoot.
In Scotland our kids are slightly luckier, exams and summer break are earlier, so final exams finish in may, school holidays are end of June. ( flights much cheaper then too!!)

Bonobosown · 10/06/2016 09:24

Oh you guys just reminded me of another thing I don't like about summer - everyone's manky feet coming out. Shudder.

NicknameUsed · 10/06/2016 09:32

I don't really look at feet. It isn't as if they are "in your face" so to speak. I would think it is very easy to avoid other people's "manky feet"

Bonobosown · 10/06/2016 09:45

Hard to avoid people walking barefoot round the office.

"Hard to avoid people walking barefoot round the office."

That doesn't happen where I work

Bonobosown · 10/06/2016 10:00

I'm slim and I still sweat buckets.

Disgusting comment, argy.

SolomanDaisy · 10/06/2016 11:29

Shame you're stuck with that delightful personality year round argy.

SooBee61 · 10/06/2016 12:51

YANBU! Currently sitting here with 5 insect bites - 2 on arm and 3 on leg. Itch like hell and I try v. hard not to scratch.

It's this awful humidity we always get in this country - feel sweaty and hot and harassed.

Roll on autumn.

notamummy10 · 10/06/2016 13:00

I like every season except summer!! I don't own any 'summery' clothes so I'm stuck in black skinny jeans:(

Also we haven't had any of the rain or thunderstorm forecasted, the poor grass is looking sorry for itself. Roll on Autumn!

pinkladyapple · 10/06/2016 13:11

argy as a non-slim person I count the months down until I can sit outside and admire the slim and toned bodies of women wearing "little dresses" while I sweat.

As a non-slim person naturally I am fully covered at all times to avoid offending anyone with the sight of my body. After all, only thin people wear summer clothes.

seafoodeatit · 10/06/2016 13:55

I can't stand the heat, I only like summer when I'm able to sit by the beach and not have to walk/move or can get away to an air conned room. I prefer spring when it's warm as you can sit and eat outside without being hounded by wasps.

I do love a bbq but see point above about wasps.

Weight is irrelevant, I'm overweight now since not shedding baby weight but I used to be slim and would get horrible and sweaty minutes after being outside.

Patterned dresses that don't show sweat have always been good friends of mine!

smellsofelderberries · 10/06/2016 14:16

YANBU. As an Aussie I hate summers here too, because everyone seems to think 23 degrees is too OMG hot and they as going to die Hmm my only complaint is that it doesn't really every actually get hot enough Grin

notamummy10 · 10/06/2016 14:25

Okay... I take the 'it's not rained' comment back. Blush

NicknameUsed · 10/06/2016 14:28

"I don't own any 'summery' clothes so I'm stuck in black skinny jeans"

For goodness sake, use a bit of common sense and buy something that is more comfortable to wear in warmer weather. IMO skinny jeans are the most uncomfortable thing I can think of wearing when the weather is hot.

I suppose you go out in winter without gloves on and complain that your hands are cold.

Bangs hand on to forehead in despair.

MadisonAvenue · 10/06/2016 14:44

It's raining here now but the morning was so humid. I walked the dog at 7.30 and was sweating buckets, my poor husband cycled the 20 miles to work and said his cycling clothes were soaked when he got there - at least they'll get a good wash when he cycles home in the rain this evening. 92% humidity apparently. Horrible. I cut all of the lawns when I got home too.

I've got insect bites on my arm and an itchy sun rash on my neck.

GrumpyMcGrumpFace · 10/06/2016 14:50

you lot made the summer go away Sad. It was all lovely and warm and sunny, and I felt so happy! Honestly, you don't know what it's like being a summer person and living in (the north of) this country. I've gone back into grey drizzle misery now...

You get about 360 of the days, let us enjoy the other 5/6 Wink

squoosh · 10/06/2016 14:52

I agree. Summer was all 'I know when I'm not wanted' and then did a bit flounce off to France.
