To actually hate most things about UK summers

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 14:02

Where do I start?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me.

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run.

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them.

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on.

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads.

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely.

Roll on Autumn. AIBU?

morningtoncresent I'm in Scotland and I've decided the lightness does bother me now I'm getting old I used to love it - staying up all night and climbing Arthur's Seat at dawn as a student. These days I'd much prefer evening to begin at a sensible time such as 8.30, not this lingering dusk til 11 melarky.

Agree with a PP, I'm looking forward to longest day being here and gone and the slow slide to autumn beginning.

seeyounearertime · 08/06/2016 17:28

Another general thing to dislike about summer.
The people that don't understand other peoples dislike of it.
"what do you mean you dont like summer? are you mad? it's gorgeous"

Fuck........ Off........

Snowwhiteandrosered · 08/06/2016 17:29

YANBU. I love spring, autumn and winter. I hate the fact that my hair goes frizzy in the heat and going into shops to see topless men in there Envy. I get migraines without fail in June/July and I hate the sound of flip flops.

OrangeFluff · 08/06/2016 17:32

Summer is fine when I'm not at work... I'm a chef! There is no air-con in our kitchen, and we have to wear trousers, jackets, aprons and hats. My entire body sweats and I've had heat stroke numerous times. unfortunately there is no legal maximum temperature for working conditions Sad

Solina · 08/06/2016 17:36

I prefer winter and cold. Also winter clothes are always so much nicer.
But YABVVVVU about BBQs. Love them and could have them every day if it wouldnt annoy the neighbours to do so. You are doing it wrong if it too much meat/rolls going stale etc. We had salmon and potatos the other day and I love things like halloumi or veg on BBQ.
I toast my rolls or bread on too to get extra flavour and non toasted burger bun is just horrid anyways.
Wonder if I could BBQ the chicken tonight...

SweetieDrops · 08/06/2016 17:42

I don't like the light nights either, it irrationally annoys me when it's still light at 11pm. Dark by 9pm would be fine by me. I don't like heat either, it feels like so much effort to do anything. The only thing I like about summer is not having to faff about for ages every morning finding, gloves hats etc.

Mooingcow · 08/06/2016 17:45

I adore autumn and winter. I spent much of my life in tropics and desert and hated that heat.

But this summer in particular is just beautiful. The lacy white hedgerows, meadows of summer flowers, cold pimms, long golden evenings... I surprise myself.

DerelictMyBalls · 08/06/2016 17:49

And check the forecast and dress for the weather!

I would, but I need to dress for work. I don't think they would appreciate me turning up in batty riders, flip flops and a bra top.

I love hot, sunny weather... when I'm on holiday and all I need to do is lounge around in a bikini all day, drinking pina coladas and then sleep in a nice, cool, air-conditioned room. When I have to commute, work, cook, clean, try to sleep, etc, in bastard heat and blazing sunshine, it is NOT fun in the slightest!

seeyounearertime - exactly! When people find out that I like cooler weather and hate heatwaves, they look at me as though I had just shot their granny.

Sallystyle · 08/06/2016 17:58

We have only had two days of sun. Today was 19c with quite a strong breeze. I think we had another hot day a week or so ago.

We haven't had enough of it to be wishing for Autumn and winter yet, surely? Unless you live somewhere that has had more than two days of nice weather.

I hate winter with a passion so I understand hating a season, but it seems strange to say roll on Autumn when we haven't even had a summer yet to moan about Grin

Okay377 · 08/06/2016 18:04

YANBU on holiday in the countryside - lovely. In a city going about your daily business - I'm a hot mess within 30 secs of leaving the house. Especially London and THE TUBE. shudders

MiffleTheIntrovert · 08/06/2016 18:05

I love you all.

I just realised I love Autumn/Winter as I can wear a lovely lap blanket whilst sitting in my wheelchair. I realise how sad this makes me sound but I sort of don't really care

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 08/06/2016 18:07

Best. Thread. Ever. I feel so damn sorry for anyone with a physical job in the summer.

NatalieRushman · 08/06/2016 18:10

Summer is my least favourite season. I hibernate through it as much as I can, and when I leave the house I wear massive floppy hats and slather myself in suncream. I swear I can feel my skin burning as soon as I step outdoors. When I'm indoors, I shut all the curtains if there's nobody else home with me. It's bliss.

The only upside to summer is wearing pretty summer dresses.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 08/06/2016 18:10

Summer doesn't last long. It'd be better if the UK was drier. I think the heat is nice but the humidity is foul.

I'm currently not liking my next door neighbour leaving her back door open so all I can smell wafting out are fags and Jeyes fluid, and playing her records so loud I can't get on with my work. She does the annoying music in the winter too though.

Unpropergrammer · 08/06/2016 18:17

Wasps! Evil little things.

MrsDoylesTeaParty · 08/06/2016 18:22

I lived in the Middle East where it was regularly 35c in summer, that felt like England in 25c. It's a different heat there, it's dry and breezy instead of muggy and sweaty. Spring there is 25c and it's beautiful, but the same temp here feels too much! Hot days here need to be by the coast with toes dipped in the sea..

MamaBear98 · 08/06/2016 18:24

I'm in Ireland not the UK but I absolutely hate summer for all the reasons s listed above.
I'd happily take the cold and winter woolly jumpers any day over the summer...

MrsDoylesTeaParty · 08/06/2016 18:30

Hmm just had a thought... Are most of us summer haters introverts? Grin We feel more forced to be outside being sociable because everyone else is..

What a depressing moany thread! I love autumn certainly but living in Scotland I welcome the few days to summer that we get. Lovely to be able to wear bright colours and loose clothes, to sit outside with packed lunch, to feel the warmth on my skin.
On Sunday the family came round, we had a picnic in the garden and played table tennis outside. Nothing fancy, but everyone said how lovely it was. Squirting on sun screen is not exactly onerous, wear a hat if you burn.

MiffleTheIntrovert · 08/06/2016 18:39

I might be a bit introverted. Possibly. Grin

MiffleTheIntrovert · 08/06/2016 18:40

I would actually quite like to live as a hermit, ideally in Finland.

CremeBrulee · 08/06/2016 18:42

YANBU

Another couples gripes to add to the list:

  • dire music from local 'bands' moves into the pub garden from where it cannot be escaped.
  • travelling into London becomes even more hideous especially travelling on the smelly, sweaty central line at rush hour which is almost unbearable even in cooler weather
  • DS thinks he doesn't have to go to bed until it's properly dark. Bye bye evenings to myself, hello tired grumpy DS in the morning!
LoveBeingAMum555 · 08/06/2016 18:42

Oh I agree. Doing an office job stuck indoors all day, then when weekend comes or you have a few days off it inevitably rains. What to eat? I made shepherds pie yesterday, its too hot for that. Give them salad and they dont want that. Well what do you bl**dy want then??

I find clothes so much more difficult in summer, especially once you hit your mid 40s and there are so many clothes that are OK on a beach in Majorca but totally unacceptable anywhere else. Oh and finding office clothes that look professional but are comfortable when your office doesn't have air conditioning.

I have to wait until 8pm to walk the dog because he always looks like he is going to keel over and die if I walk him any other time. Oh and my dog has hayfever too.

And the kids (17 and 15) wont wear suncream any more. They prefer to just burn. Endless lectures about skin cancer which falls on deaf ears.

Oh for a bright, breezy spring day when its just warm enough to go out without a coat.

cosmicglittergirl · 08/06/2016 18:56

One of the things I enjoyed about my four years at uni in Scotland was the lack of warm weather. Bliss. And the gloom that set in from September until at least May.
