To actually hate most things about UK summers

jubileepancakes · 08/06/2016 14:02

Where do I start?

Flys. In the house, shitting everywhere. Sitting on my fruit and playing bloody games with me.

Sweating. I can't go for a walk, do the school run without looking a sweaty mess. I never know what to wear either as its cloudy first thing then baking hot later. The gym is not a nice place to be and neither is actually going for a run.

Sun cream. Sticky and horrible. Kids hate having it on. I hate putting it on them.

Sunhats. On afore mentioned kids. Won't keep them on.

BBQs. Horrid. Too much meat, rolls going crispy where they've been left out. Sweaty cheese. Limp, warm salads.

Smug people sat outside pubs because they can

Everyone saying isn't the weather lovely.

Roll on Autumn. AIBU?

Oh, and there are massive assumptions on here. It isn't hot everywhere in the UK. Those of us in the north actually like summer because it isn't freezing cold.

It is a pleasantly warm 18 degrees today. The sun is shining and I have washing drying on the line

"Everyone seems to have huge boobs on MN, too."

They do, don't they. I don't. I will never fail a pencil test. I don't hate weddings and I'm not an introvert. I answer the telephone and the front door. I still have a landline that gets used regularly. Therefore I am not a typical mumsnetter.

Oh, and I love summer Grin

MiffleTheIntrovert · 09/06/2016 13:04

Clean you are welcome, I'm glad if it was helpful. I bought some from an EBay seller, they were only about £3.50 and really well made. I found that although I was tempted to cover all my awful hair, if I left a bit showing at the front it actually looked better.

NicknameUsed · 09/06/2016 13:07

Oh, and the summer haters get the weather they like for most of the year. It is a little unfair to begrudge us hothouse flowers the few days in the year where we can actually remove our cardigans.

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:09

Exactly. So much moaning over what, ten days of the year!

MadisonAvenue · 09/06/2016 13:26

Does this mean that all of you people who hate summer don't go on holidays abroad in the Summer? Do you do winter destinations?

We go in Spring or Autumn. This year we're going to California in Oct/Nov. Still likely to be rather warm but not as bad as Summer. We don't do beach/poolside holidays anyway so don't rely on hot sunny weather.

ohtheholidays · 09/06/2016 13:28

I'm loving it,the gardens are looking lovely, the flowers are all blooming, the birds are singing and the gardens are lovely and peaceful whilst the DC are all at school.
I've managed to get 4 loads of washing dried on the line all done(we have 5DC)so less money being spent on the electric.

My DH bought one of those snap shut door curtains for the back door so now we can have the door wide open all day and no insects can get in,it's brilliant.

Fans downstairs and in the bedrooms is stopping everyone from getting to hot when they're sitting around or trying to sleep.

I cant wait to go to the coast, sunbathing on the sand, building sandcastles with the DC,eating fish and chips round the harbour, eating ice creams on the beach and going to the the New Forest and seeing all the lovely horses and I'm looking forward to using our new BBQ(DH has put it together today)and having our friends round.

The sunshine lifts my mood,it makes me feel happier and more content.

petitpois55 · 09/06/2016 13:33

I'm really enjoying the Sunshine. It'll disappear soon enough , so all you miseries will get what you wantSmile
June is normally summer in this country, and it normally goes down hill after that.

chunkymum1 · 09/06/2016 13:33

Well I personally love everything about summer- in theory. Not having to wear bulky coats, picnics in the countryside, gathering with friends and neighbours over a BBQ, sitting outside a pub in the early evening, being able to pack a small bag for a weekend away with just a few pairs of shorts and T shirts, not worrying about getting rained on, days spent lounging on the beach whilst the DC play in the sand etc etc

Every year I get excited (and have been known to book holidays somewhere hot to get the experience without waiting for our 10 days of summer). But then the reality hits. It's like I've developed 'summer amnesia' over the winter. Reality= sudden temperature changes so I go out in a summer dress (having dutifully checked the forecast) and by lunch time it's overcast so I'm cold and feeling rather stupid. Wasps and other assorted insects swarming around any food taken outside. No travelling light due to the need for all the medical stuff that summer brings- asthma inhalers, hayfever tablets, sun cream not to mention sun hats, cover-ups for my ridiculously pale skin etc. Spotty face from wearing suncream (I have tried everything and it seems to be that or burn). Greasy hair from sun-cream and sweat. Looking crap in lovely floaty summer stuff due to weight and paleness. Sand sticking to sun-cream. Trying to fight DC to put on suncream (and ending up with permanently greasy hands from this task)- as well as constant sun-burn stress from worrying that I haven't reapplied often enough/missed a bit/some has rubbed off. Suncream on glasses so I can't see anything [Yes, I have a big problem with suncream]. DC that won't go to sleep 'because the sun is still up mummy so it's daytime'.

dividedmansions · 09/06/2016 13:33

so much moaning over what, ten days of the year!

It's not just ten days. It's uncomfortable for me anything above 20c really. Way more than ten days.

Everyone's apparently entitled to bore on about how much they hate the rain and cold, why not the heat!

dividedmansions · 09/06/2016 13:35

And it seems to be hot for bloody ages now too. It's warm well into December. This winter was crap - barely below 15c in London!!

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:37

I don't like weather bores in any season. People should be rationed to 8 days weather moaning per annum.

DerelictMyBalls · 09/06/2016 13:38

Yes, people who complain about hot weather, on a thread about disliking hot weather, are 'miseries', aren't they? Not like those sparkling wits who whinge about a spot of rain.

Does this mean that all of you people who hate summer don't go on holidays abroad in the Summer?

On the contrary, I love lounging around by a pool somewhere sunny, reading under a sun shade, sipping cool drinks and jumping in for a swim to cool off. It's commuting, working, housework, cooking, etc, that is such a bore in the heat. I would love Summer if I didn't have to do anything!

squoosh · 09/06/2016 13:39

7 of my 8 allotted moaning days will be dedicated to those days when there's a gale blowing torrential horizontal rain in my face.

DerelictMyBalls · 09/06/2016 13:44

Thing is, it's easy to warm up if you are cold but it's very difficult to cool down when it's too hot, unless you have air conditioning or a pool. You can only remove so much clothing.

dividedmansions · 09/06/2016 13:56

Yy derelict

In winter, if you don't like the cold you put a nice jumper on and have a warm drink

In summer there's bugger all you can do to keep cool, especially if you need to be out and about

jubileepancakes · 09/06/2016 14:02

I love the sunshine and warmth when I'm on holiday abroad as I have everything I need, am probably wearing very little and I don't need to do much. Its while trying to get on with my everyday life that I find it all annoying.

Let me explain. The smug people in beer gardens are smug because they aren't working, they have a table and they are happy to let everyone know those facts by being noisy and tipsy (probably)

BBQs are just such an effort aren't they? You decide to have one so go to the supermarket to get some bits. This involves pushing and shoving around the chilled BBQ meat fridge while everyone else around you is also grabbing. You choose some horrible bright red kebabs, huge cheese filled, Aberdeen Angus burgers and some deluxe sausages. Oh and chicken drumsticks because you need some white meat too. You then need some burger buns and cheese, salad etc. You already have the relish as you bought it 2 years ago and it's still in the back of the fridge.

Back home and you wheel the dusty BBQ out of the garage, it still has last times food all over the grills so that needs cleaning. Which is a right balls ache. There's no charcoal/gas so off you go to get that. The kids are now asking if it's ready yet. 2 hours later and dinner is served. It's overcooked and burnt as no one wants to risk people getting food poisoning. The kids eat one sausage each and then run off to play again. The burgers are dry and tasteless. No one eats the salad.

Maybe this is just my own experience Grin

Bbq. What a faff!
Sausages on the bbq = 2 hours
Sausages on the grill = 15-20 mins
And I'm not even that keen on sausages
Ditto chicken.
We've done stuffed red peppers, cola chicken, ribs on the bbq but indoors is miles quicker.

Some people leave their dogs outside for longer in the summer and the barking drives me mad.

Saw a thread the other day about mowing the lawn after 18:00, which oddly enough doesn't bother me. When else can 9-5 workers cut the lawn if the weather is shit at the weekend?

When you go to Yarmouth for the weekend and live at the cash point. May as well just strap the bloody thing to my rucksack and be done with it. Or give the cafes/funfair/arcades my d/d details so they drain my finances directly. So bloody expensive to go out in is country in the summer.

Roll on AI to the med in July. All the best bits of summer without the shit and faff.

fassone · 09/06/2016 14:56

Let me see.

Zero heating bills.
Open windows and warm, fresh air.
Beautiful garden.
Long evenings outdoors.
No need for socks, sweaters, coats, hats, gloves.
Line dried laundry in an hour.
Massive improvement in my psoriasis.
Cool showers whenever, because I don't need hot water to warm up.
Lots going on in our locality.
Summer festivals.
Cold beers.
Less traffic as school holidays begin.
Kids aren't snotting, coughing, vomming, picking up all sorts from being indoors all the time.

If I win the Euromillions I'll buy a house in the Southern Hemisphere to get back to back summers.

pearlylum · 09/06/2016 15:08

I love summer too- sorry.

NickiFury · 09/06/2016 15:10

My heart lifts when I check the forecast and it's cooling down or even showing rain and wind. Dd has autism and REALLY struggles with being too hot plus the brightness of the sun - guaranteed meltdown. My favourite time of year is the end of September heading into October.

GreenShadow · 09/06/2016 15:43

Only thing I can think of that I dislike (hate is too strong a word) is lack of rain, so a lot of watering the vegetables, pots etc by hand.

Otherwise, LOVE it all! (Sorry)

ForalltheSaints · 09/06/2016 17:26

I like the warmth, not the humidity. Especially when not at work or on the couple of days a year I get to sit and watch cricket (this year at the Oval).

NicknameUsed · 09/06/2016 17:31

"It's not just ten days. It's uncomfortable for me anything above 20c really"

20 degrees is warm not hot. If you struggle with that perhaps you have some health issues that need sorting out.

fassone has articulated very well the reasons why summer is so much better than winter. My problem at work is that they have the aircon on full blast so I have to wear warm clothes to work in summer.

I love summer Grin

BustingOut · 09/06/2016 17:35

Roll on September, I say! We live by the coast and the kids love to go to the beach but my Lord the blooming sand in the car, kitchen, trailed up the stairs not to mention every frigging orifice! And the laundry quadrupled with all the beach towels and the numerous change of outfits. And the kids are off school for 8 bloody weeks.....

Yip give me the wind and the rain any day. Oh yes and boarding school would be good too! Wink

pinkladyapple · 09/06/2016 17:50

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and I feel like a round ball of sweat carrying my 5.5lb hitchhiker around, I'm usually a jeans and t-shirt girl but I'm in dresses as a matter of necessity.

but I have to admit getting to show off my bump in pretty maternity dresses after TTC for 3 years is lovely.
