To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

YANBU!

georgiatraher · 06/06/2016 17:40

YANBU. I also hate this. Pretty sure smoking is dying out though (poor choice of words perhaps...)

WhatALoadOfWankers · 06/06/2016 17:41

I think YABU
Where else can they go ?

callherwillow · 06/06/2016 17:42

Yanbu: I hate this. Summertime we ALL want to be outside.

ColdTeaAgain · 06/06/2016 17:42

YANBU, cafe shouldn't allow it and it would make me not want to go back tbh. Why should non smokers who want to sit outside and enjoy their food as well have it spoilt by smoke?

callherwillow · 06/06/2016 17:42

They could maybe not smoke ...

Unpropergrammer · 06/06/2016 17:43

Do they have to smoke whilst eating a meal though? Could they not go stand outside the seating area for five minutes whilst they had a cigarette.

I'm lucky that the friends I have who do smoke are really considerate about smoking around other people. I have met some who don't care about blowing it right in your face though.

IthinkIamsinking · 06/06/2016 17:43

YABU. Do you make this much fuss about car pollution?

Emochild · 06/06/2016 17:43

Every summer this topic comes up and every year there is a clear division between those who think YABU and those that think otherwise

Personally -as a non smoker -I think smokers take enough flack for doing something that is entirely legal

They don't get a choice to sit inside -you do

Personally I can't see the attraction of sitting outside to eat -sun always in 1 person's eyes, insects about and being fair the inevitable 1 sided pink skin

ColdTeaAgain · 06/06/2016 17:44

georgia sadly, I really don't think smoking is dying out, judging by the amount of pregnant women I have to do extras scans for who are heavy smokers (10 or more a day). This goes across all ages from teen pregnancies to over 35's.

WorraLiberty · 06/06/2016 17:45

Ahh the first thread of the year Grin

Now Summer really has arrived!

YABU really because they cant smoke inside but you could have chosen to eat in there.

clarrrp · 06/06/2016 17:45

Where else can they go ?

Home.

Daffodil90 · 06/06/2016 17:45

I cant abide smelling others smoke. It really gives me the rage. It's fine in its designated area, that way I can avoid it but when the smoking area is 20meters away and your stood next to me instead. ...hell hath no fury!

And when eating too, id have been inside to check the smoking policy. It's not always allowed if it's enclosed area.

PreciousVagine · 06/06/2016 17:46

They do get the choice to sit inside. Just not with a cigarette.

Lelloteddy · 06/06/2016 17:46

YANBU. Anti social and utterly selfish.

whois · 06/06/2016 17:47

YANBU

WhatALoadOfWankers · 06/06/2016 17:50

clarrrp but why should they ?
I don't smoke but get annoyed with people moaning about smoking outside

cupkakesandkittens · 06/06/2016 17:51

"You have a choice to eat inside, they don't", what??? They could have eaten inside without a cigarette, or eaten outside and just waited until the end of their meal to smoke? Or if they were desparate, just nipped out of the cafe onto the street or another area where people dont have to sit in their smoke.

MakingJudySmile · 06/06/2016 17:52

As a none smoker I think YABU. If you chose to sit an eat in a public area where smoking is acceptable (legal in other words) then you have to simply accept there will be people smoking in that area.

Unpropergrammer · 06/06/2016 17:52

Smoking isn't a right though. There's one thing smoking outside, another smoking around families trying to eat.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 06/06/2016 17:53

YANBU! Horrible to smoke in close proximity to people eating.

NotYoda · 06/06/2016 17:54

I think it's selfish and a horrible habit, but I also think there are few enough places they can do it, so on balance YABU

HermioneJeanGranger · 06/06/2016 17:54

Both, really.

YABU because you know it's legal for them to smoke out there, so moaning about it when you've chosen to also sit there is a bit pointless.

But, YANBU to think it's rude. I don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke but it's not nice eating your dinner surrounded by it. Re. the car fume comment, OP wasn't sat in the middle of loads of cars with their engines running, so it's not really an equal comparison.

NotYoda · 06/06/2016 17:55

I do agree with you that most smokers (I imagine) don't do it; they wait

ClopySow · 06/06/2016 17:55

Ooooh. A summer smoker bashing thread.

Well, as a smoker, i think it's massively unfair that smokers think they own outside spaces.

But as a smoker i think until the law tells me to stop it, which it will eventually, i'm going to smoke outside. Although i am very aware of trying to stand down wind of people.
