To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

As an ex-smoker (took up vaping, went nicotine free, so still vape occasionally), I used to get annoyed when I couldn't smoke, even outside. We'd already been thrown out of pubs, to stand in the cold, now people get huffy about us smoking outside. I understand why some people object (now that my taste bids have returned!), but I think that it is unreasonable to object wherever smokers smoke (pub gardens, parks, public squares, someone is trying to ban smoking in all of them!). And then it gets even more bloody stupid when people want to treat vaping as if it were smoking! The one thing that has some prospect of actually doing some good and helping smokers stop (or at least reduce) the harmful effects, and some idiots still object. So, unless these non-smokers who eat outside are going to reinvigorate the pub industry all on their own, I suggest they let owners have designated outside smoking and non-smoking areas, if they insist, and let vapers vape anywhere.

Move out of the way of those ( the majority) who wish to enjoy their social time at pubs/restaurants

They do...... outside FFS.

BoneyBackJefferson · 06/06/2016 19:51

gamerchick
Where was the support of all the whiners then when they got their way?

I was in the pub drinking in the nice smoke free area that had been created.

Sallystyle · 06/06/2016 19:51

I am an ex smoker who now vapes.

I too think the very quick change of attitudes to smoking is interesting and I'm pretty pleased about it too.

I hate the smell of smoke now with a passion and I never understood how ill it can make you feel until I was quit for over two years myself.

I wouldn't want to sit in a pub/cafe garden and smell smoke and I am pretty sure that before long it will be illegal to do so.

It is selfish. I was selfish when I sat near people and smoked, smoking is a selfish habit, there is no doubt about that. Until it is illegal I just grin and bear it.

voddiekeepsmesane · 06/06/2016 19:53

IthinkIamsinking and in the summer smokers need to move away from outside areas too. It is only for a few minutes while having the smoke it's not like just because you are a smoker you are not allowed to be there at all ...just while having a smoke.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2016 19:54

'Bet some of you lot think that someone vaping next to you will give you instant cancer too...'

I'm just waiting for this. I vape.

vladimpaler · 06/06/2016 19:56

Ex smoker; gave up in 2000; never looked back:

I found and find smoking indoors around those who don't smoke to be completely unacceptable. So did the govt, so they all got kicked outside to smoking gardens. Fair enough.

So now, you want to go there as well (cos it is warm) and stop them smoking in their area as well. If you don't like the environment, go back indoors; or sit somewhere else. Us non-smokers have already got 98% of what we wanted; and yet you want the rest. You can piss off and take your brood somewhere else to whine about stuff you don't like there. Poor sods - can't they even have a small place to light up?

BrandNewAndImproved · 06/06/2016 19:57

Meh I think it's selfish to take young children into nice cafe gardens. I'll take a smoker sat on the next table over a crying baby, tantrumming two year old, stroppy 3 yr old and annoying 5 year olds.

I'd be in favour of a over 8s outside only area.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 06/06/2016 19:57

*Not really. The orchestra was indoors.

Heavy metal is banned indoors, so those who want to listen are outside, all year. They don't swop metal for orchestra, even when the weather is nice.*

Eh? Orchestra = food, metal = smoking. Smoking in close proximity to people eating makes it unpleasant for the people eating, whether they are inside or out.

IthinkIamsinking · 06/06/2016 19:57

Not a smoker anymore Voddie Smile

nuttymango · 06/06/2016 19:59

YANBU. I have asthma; why should I be forced to sit inside because somebody wants to smoke?

We were at an outdoor cafe today, no smoking was allowed except in a designated round the back of the cafe which was well away from the rest of it.

voddiekeepsmesane · 06/06/2016 19:59

Smile Ithink

. I'll take a smoker sat on the next table over a crying baby, tantrumming two year old, stroppy 3 yr old and annoying 5 year olds.

People who sit back whilst their baby cries, two year old tantrums or three year old strops are selfish too.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 20:02

Stay inside and stop whining.

Why should people (including smokers) who want to sit outside to eat without people blowing tobacco smoke over them be prevented from doing so just because a few addicts can't bear to wait to light up or to walk away to somewhere where they can smoke without bothering others?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/06/2016 20:04

You are never going to win when you've got lots of people. I can't stand the smell of meat but someone is always going to order a steak.

At the end of the day, if you are sitting in the smoking area then people will smoke.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 20:05

I really don't understand this attitude that there is some sort of duty to make concessions for the poor smokers. If I want to do something voluntary which is thoroughly anti-social, I take it for granted that I don't have a right to do it somewhere where it will cause distress or annoyance to other people; I don't have a right to assume that their rights will be reduced in favour of my wish to be anti-social.

ArmfulOfRoses · 06/06/2016 20:05

I smoke and wouldn't put it out for anyone who asked me to if I was in an area designated for smoking.

Because they were smoking when you got there. Your choice to stay or go.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 20:08

...and my point Augusta is the usual annual hoo ha about the possibility of smoke wafting near someone's kids once or twice during the summer while seemingly ignoring the much more worrying level of shit kids are breathing in every day.

How do you know people are ignoring that? If they're posting in a thread about smoking, guess what, they'll write about smoking. And, of course, the point is that you can be extremely worried about other types of pollution and still, absolutely validly, object to people unnecessarily adding to that pollution.

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 06/06/2016 20:09

I smoke and while I would be considerate enough not to light up when people are eating nearby, I would be irritated if someone complained to me about smoking outdoors in a smoking area just because they didn't like it.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 20:10

Because they were smoking when you got there. Your choice to stay or go.

And what about the many, many occasions they aren't smoking when we got there?

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/06/2016 20:11

If you are in the designated smoking area then people are going to smoke. You made that choice when you sat there.

ApostrophesMatter · 06/06/2016 20:12

Accept that it's a smoking area. Find a place that doesn't allow smoking outside.

SabineUndine · 06/06/2016 20:16

I can't bear it, and if any cafe or pub wants to ban smoking on its terrace or in its garden, please let us know and I will be a faithful customer. You can't sit outside in the sun without having someone else's disgusting smoke in your face, and it's worse if you're eating.
