To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

I remember a "get non smokers back in the venue" petition when the ban first came in!

HeartsofOak · 06/06/2016 19:01

Fenulla Joking aside, I remember sitting on my gps laps while they smoked. And coughing. And being told I needed a cigarette to kill those nasty cough germs Grin

Sometimes I wonder how we all survived out childhoods, it was so very different to now and dangerous

I'm not a smoker but I do think the risk of passive smoking in the open air must be negligible and far less than from car exhausts on a street cafe.

BoatyMcBoat · 06/06/2016 19:02

YABU. You wouldn't have them snoking imdoors and of course now you don't want them smoking outdoors, when the weather's more clement. You won't give a stuff come the autumn.

The tax they pay on fags is so high that you can't afford to have them stop smoking unless you're prepared to pay more tax yourself to make up the short fall.

You'll complain about vaping next, naturally.

YANBU

I can't wait for smoking to be totally banned in pubs and restaurants.

You can't expect people to wait until you finish your food, everybody eat at different time. Pubs and restaurants should have non-smoking outdoor areas.

I always snigger when I see these threads. I live in Greece and asking people not to smoke is like asking them not to eat food or breath oxygen. They did try to impose a smoking ban here but people still smoked inside. Then they sent people out to fine bars that had ashtrays on the table. People still smoked and the waiter just handed you a small plastic cup with water in it to flick your ash into.

Maybe Ive become immune to the smell of smoke now, but people smoking outside really doesnt bother me, does the smoke not dissipate in the English air? I read so many threads from people claiming that their neighbours smoke travels across a garden and into their open windows or through walls and ceilings to stink out their home? HOW?

sharknad0 · 06/06/2016 19:06

posted too fast: I have stopped going to places where it stinks of cigarette. It's a nice day, I want to be outside.

I can't be the only one: pubs owners are complaining that they much quieter than they use to be and can't survive (just saw an article in the local paper). Give customers something pleasant, they will come back

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 06/06/2016 19:09

Yabu, if you sit in what is effectively a smoking area to eat your meal then you can't complain when people smoke.
If you don't like the fact that it's a smoking area then don't go back to that cafe, go to one with an outdoor seating area that's also non-smoking.

Scribblegirl · 06/06/2016 19:11

Pubs and restaurants should have non-smoking outdoor areas.

Except that the 'non smoking outdoor area' would be completely empty for 10 months of the year, rendering it a colossal waste of money and space for the pub.

Market forces tbh. If you don't like smoking in the pub garden, go to a pub where they have a non smoking garden. Vote with your feet.

Don't gripe at people for doing something that's a) completely legal and b) not prohibited by the owner of the business.

BranTriLlygaid · 06/06/2016 19:12

Ah it's that time of year again, when the self righteous anti-smoking brigade rear their perfect heads. Always forgetting all the other smells, including those caused by the polluting causing cars they drive to their super special cafe and such Hmm. If it's not the smell of fumes, it's horrible mix of food, sweaty people, BBQ smoke, general things that are made worse by heat. It makes no difference a bit of fag smoke is thrown in, but of course once the none smokers venture out for summer, gives them a good excuses to get on their high horse.

I hate smoking and i still think yabu.
They have nowhere left to smoke.
Don't like it go inside!

GiraffeTastic · 06/06/2016 19:21

Yanbu. Smoking is a horrible habit.

SleepyRoo · 06/06/2016 19:22

YANBU. Addiction makes you selfish

rosie1959 · 06/06/2016 19:22

We were at a large Wetherspoons at a sea side resort The inside is massive with a very small smoking area on the terrace upstairs
It was very busy on the terrace two or three women came out and complained about the smoke A bright young lad said I am sure you approve on the banning of smoking in bars so go and eat your dinner in there !

frikadela01 · 06/06/2016 19:24

Yabu. As a nonsmoker (or ex smoker I guess but it's been years) I don't particularly like sitting around smokers but they have to go somewhere and its still legal to smoke outside.

Someone upthread mentioned there'd be complaints about calling next... I actually went for a coffee today and sat outside when 2 people came and sat at the table next to us and started vaping. They were both using the ones that create huge clouds of vapour (I want to call them sub-ohm but I may have just picked that out of thin air) it wasn't long till we were surrounded by a huge cloud of very sweet smelling vapour so we went inside. I'd rather sit next to a cigarette smokers than sit in that fog.

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 19:25

Where else can they go ?

Nowhere? Just do without smoking for the relatively short time they're sitting there?

frikadela01 · 06/06/2016 19:25

Vaping not bloody calling.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/06/2016 19:26

does the smoke not dissipate in the English air?

No, mommawoo - we have uniquely clever smoke here. Instead of dissipating like in other countries, it somehow gathers itself into a noxious little column, turns left, nips round the back, does a U turn and whooshes straight up the noses (or even through the closed windows) of the unfortunate Wink

Actually, FWIW I quite like the idea of non-smoking areas in pub gardens, but it just wouldn't be enough for some; they'd still moan if someone in their line of vision smoked, whether they were affected or not

AugustaFinkNottle · 06/06/2016 19:27

I think it's selfish and a horrible habit, but I also think there are few enough places they can do it, so on balance YABU

But there's the whole of the great outdoors! Why do they have to do it a few feet away from small children and people who are eating?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 06/06/2016 19:27

YABU. If you hate smoke so much go somewhere with a non-smoking area outside. But to go somewhere where smoking is allowed and then bitch about it is daft.

What gets me is the amount car pollution that people completely overlook - you see people with little kids sitting outside cafes/pubs in the summer with the exhaust fumes pouring straight into the buggies. Smoking is considered horrific, exhaust fumes not so much. It's weird, a sort of disconnect between real risk and perceived risk.

voddiekeepsmesane · 06/06/2016 19:28

Giraffe Smoking is a horrible habit here have this award for voicing the fucking bleeding obvious. As a smoker in the horrible winter months I pop to the outside seating area in the cold and wet because I have a horrible addiction. In the summer months when I know place away from the seating area (front of the pub/restaurant or the carpark) Have some courtesy, smokers are definitely a minority these days and need to be mindful of others at all times IMO
