To smoke in my garden?

whoopsididit · 02/06/2016 21:30

I smoke, wish I didn't and intending to really try and stop soon. But I smoke.

Moved into a new house two weeks ago.

I smoke in the garden. About 3 or 4 a night.

A few times I've been out there and the Window next door has been abruptly and loudly slammed shut.

They obviously can't stand the smell when I'm smoking, which I suppose is fair enough as it is a disgusting habit.

I feel it really hasn't got us off to a good neighbourly start.

I try and stand well away from their windows but I'm thinking AIBU to smoke outside in my own garden ?

Oh yes I don't think it matters. I was just wondering about the advice given. In my house smoking in the front garden would be more likely to go in neighbour's windows I think.

Sallystyle · 03/06/2016 16:31

I was a 40 a day smoker, quit many times, never lasted.

Moved to a proper vape kit, quit three years ago and never looked back. You couldn't pay me to smoke now and I was a heavily addicted smoker. Vaping was the only way I could do it.

My husband was the same but he had to cut down the fags very slowly whilst vaping and it took him a year to wean off the fags totally, but he has been quit for two years now.

If you are at all interested in vaping head over to the 'Stop Smoking' section.

As for smoking in your garden, that is your right and the neighbours have a right to shut their windows. I don't like the smell of my neighbours smoking in their garden but I'm sure they don't like the sound of all my children screaming at times, or hearing them play in the garden. It's just a part of living in a semi-detached house.

Waltermittythesequel · 03/06/2016 16:32

Hang on.

Your neighbours have closed their windows, yes?

Literally closed their own windows.

And they're unreasonable, unpleasant, passive aggressive...for closing their windows?

Do I have the right of it?

MyBeard · 03/06/2016 16:43

Waltermittythesequel Grin yes you're right!

I keep thinking if Op had posted "aibu to be pissed off because my neighbours are smoking in their garden when I've got my windows open?!" she'd just be told to close them if it bothers her that much Confused

TSSDNCOP · 03/06/2016 17:48

YANBU for smoking in the garden, especially if you walk to the end. They are NBU for pulling their windows shut.

But I do really wonder at the power of a single fag to travel what must be 20 feet in open air and still polute someone's house through just an open window.

potbellyroast · 03/06/2016 18:00

How ironic that you won't smoke in your own house but you're having a little moan that your neighbour is pissed off about your cigarette smoke in her house

This. Exactly.

NorbertDentressangle · 03/06/2016 18:08

Our neighbour's DD and her friends smoke outside in their garden and it drifts through our open windows. I hate it and am on the verge of saying something but unsure what approach to take.

The gardens are big enough to mean she could smoke elsewhere and it wouldn't cause a problem (detached houses, no neighbours on the other side and they even have summer house she could use for shelter FFS) but she literally opens the door which is the other side of the hedge) and stands outside it to smoke.

TwentyCupsOfTea · 03/06/2016 18:10

People really overreact to this on here imo.

Three or four cigarettes smoked outside does not mean washing can't be hung up in a nearby garden for fear of the smell....

If you have a large garden and can smoke st the end of it I would do that personally, best not to aggravate where there is a simpler solution.
However, you would have hoped your beighbours would have spoken to you about it, rather than slamming windows.

Waltermittythesequel · 03/06/2016 19:17

Ffs, they're perfectly entitled to close their own windows! They're entitled to throw bricks through their own windows, should the mood take them!

This place sometimes!

MadameDePomPom · 03/06/2016 19:23

Of course they have the right to close their own windows. But huffily slamming windows is a bit sad.

This place sometimes!

Waltermittythesequel · 03/06/2016 19:31

Huffily slamming! Grin

I must contact all my neighbours to ensure the volume of window closing in my house hasn't offended them...

MadameDePomPom · 03/06/2016 19:35

You do have the hallmarks of a huffy slammer.

Wink
Waltermittythesequel · 03/06/2016 19:39

You're hilarious. So, so funny and witty. An absolute riot. :)

You really haven't.

Fishcake72 · 03/06/2016 20:49

I would be ecstatic if my neighbours just smoked cigarettes - they smoke weed in the garden 24 hours a day. My house stinks.

Rainbunny · 03/06/2016 22:39

Usual - it's only smokers (and the occasional ex-smoker) who thinks the smell of cigarette smoke is not disgusting. Thankfully it's becoming ever rarer.

minionsrule · 03/06/2016 22:57

crazywriter, thank you - I was wondering about all these sensitive little noses. I am a nasty smoker, if I smoke with the back door open and I am just in front of it, I can smell it in the kitchen for about 5 mins afterwards, however if bedroom window above where I stand is open I can't smell it in there.
Neighbours have never complained (or slammed windows on me) and I also have a small garden but I do try to sit on the step and blow the other way towards the further away neighbours.
Closest neighbours today had barbie, kids outside and music on (not loud but I could hear it), I wouldn't dream of moaning about that..... some people have to be upset about something don't they? Hmm

kazfoxx · 03/06/2016 22:57

Me too, usual. On making me want a fag.

Expat, how on earth can anyone find anything offensive about vaping? Confused

puddleduckmummy · 03/06/2016 23:02

This thread is really making me want a fag!

kazfoxx · 03/06/2016 23:04

Rainbunny different cigarettes different levels of smells. Someone at work really stank when he had a fag, as in he walked past me and i could really smell it, like a deep scent, IYSWIM, others not so much. I don't smoke when I'm at the office and I can smell it when others have just been. Generally, it's just a whiff.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 03/06/2016 23:07

Are you me !!!!!!!!

My neighbor does this too !
I have a little table at the bottom of the garden and we smoke there

I am so pleased it's not just me

expatinscotland · 03/06/2016 23:13

Oh, kaz, people will take offense at anything. IIRC, some places have already banned vaping. Some say it encourages young people to smoke, but I've never met anyone, including young people, who vape and didn't used to smoke first.
