AIBU?

To smoke in my garden?

I smoke, wish I didn't and intending to really try and stop soon. But I smoke.

Moved into a new house two weeks ago.

I smoke in the garden. About 3 or 4 a night.

A few times I've been out there and the Window next door has been abruptly and loudly slammed shut.

They obviously can't stand the smell when I'm smoking, which I suppose is fair enough as it is a disgusting habit.

I feel it really hasn't got us off to a good neighbourly start.

I try and stand well away from their windows but I'm thinking AIBU to smoke outside in my own garden ?

  1. Why not smoke in your own home?

2 why not smoke all day?
  1. Why do it at all? Honestly, get that book. You owe it to yourself.

Get a vape stick instead -thats how I gave up the fags, never looked back (not one of the ciggy shaped things though, those are pants. Vape stick that you put juice into yourself).

Maybe go out the front instead, I find people are less likely to have front windows open as fronts open onto roads/streets and tend to be noisier.

You want to give up right? So make it as hard for yourself as you can!! Leave the fags in the car and the lighter in a sealed bag at the end of the garden. Have an umbrella for rainy days and go to the end of the garden rain or shine. Pop round to your neighbours and say you realized it was going into their house so you have moved to the bottom of the garden. Hopefully this will improve relations with your neighbors and you will cut down on the fags. If you make it a real faff to smoke you will smoke less.

Our old neighbours did this and I hated it. I have asthma which is made worse by cigarette smoke, and when we had a newborn we had to have the windows shut all summer so we sweltered. I was really happy when they moved out, even though they were otherwise pleasant people.

It's not just a smell.... It's a sort of 'sting' in throat and wyes. That's what I get from it anyway

My neighbours smoke and it often drifts in to my kitchen, I don't really care.

What I do hate and really pisses me off is when my (different) neighbours smoke weed on the communal balcony off our bedrooms. We dry washing out there so often have the door open, the room also gets bad mould so I need the window open most days and I put DD to nap/bed in that room so I don't appreciate it stinking of weed because they don't want their own house to smell of it Hmm

I love the people suggesting moving to the bottom of the garden. Op has already told you it's a new build with a small garden. My similar sounding garden is 7m long. Wouldn't make the blindest difference which end I stood, cigarette smoke is strong.

Op you will need to walk somewhere. Find a naughty tree to hide under and smoke.

3-4 cigarettes is a lot for an evening.
As mentioned above, no - it's really not! I used to get through about 15 in an evening. I smoked indoors though. But reading threads like this I imagine my neighbours could still smell it.

I love smell of weed though. I wouldn't mind at all if my neighbours smoked weed.

OP, you will quit eventually, when you're ready. I quit two months ago, using both patches and an e cig. I haven't had any cravings at all for tobacco. It's been so much easier than I expected and I love having the 'extra' cash!

Yes, it's your garden and you have every right to smoke in your garden. But I still think YABU if the smoke is blowing straight into your neighbor's house/

If it wasn't disgusting and smelly, you'd be doing it in your own house. But it is, so you're not ruining your home with the discolouration and smells. But you're perfectly happy for it to knowingly blow into your neighbor's house and make it disgusting and smelly from the smoke and stop their enjoyment of their home. And I think that's unreasonable and quite a repugnant thing to do.

probably means they can't leave their washing out the too

Seriously? That is ridiculous, bonfire smoke or BBQ maybe, but I'm not buying that a cigarette smoked outdoors in next door's garden will affect your washing.

'I love smell of weed though.'

OMG, it's dire. Mine smokes skunk and you can smell it through the floor. That doesn't bother me so much as that he is also a dickhead. But we've also had really bad neighbours who partied a lot or played loud music even during the evening.

YANBU to smoke in your garden, but they aren't BU to shut their windows. I'd do the same. Try not to read too much into it, it might just be slamming because they want to close it quickly.

I'm fairly certain I offended a smoker a few days ago- I was sitting on a bench, she sat down next to me and lit up. I'm pregnant and I have HG so I had to walk away or I'd be sick because of the smell. Plus I didn't want to expose the baby unnecessarily. She looked a bit annoyed but I wasn't trying to make a point, I respect her right to smoke there. I just wanted to remove myself from it! I thought she's be more offended if I said "I'm sorry but I need to leave now because the smell of your cigarette is likely to make me violently unwell". Bet she thought I was a right stuck up cow! I would prefer you as a neighbour op, instead of my neighbour who thinks that it is reasonable to allow her 2 dogs to bark incessantly all bloody day from 7 until 11. Then she works shifts so she has to let them out at 4am and we just get a ssh! after 5 minutes of barking. My dp sometimes has to be up at 6, so that's us up for the day at 4. Anyway sorry rant over.

We live next to a hotel and obvs lots of people smoke in the v popular beer garden, but we have a big tre between us and it - it does go a long way to stopping it drifting to us, perhaps you could get some bamboo pots to waffle the smoke ?

How ironic that you won't smoke in your own house but you're having a little moan that your neighbour is pissed off about your cigarette smoke in her house.

3 to 4 cigarettes worth of smoke drifting into her house every night would have an effect on her health and that of her kids. Plus the smell lingers. I wouldn't want to risk all my clothes and furnishings reeking of fag smoke.

I know you can do what you like in your garden but Id be pissed off if I was your neighbour.

Bet your neighbours have a car belching out fumes.

I would just keep smoking in MY garden. Don't let them bully you.

Don't smoke indoors - that's a silly suggestion. There's nothing wrong with smoking in the garden - it's outside and there is no law against it. I'm a non-smoker but my sister lived with me for a while and she smoked in my garden. The smell would sometimes drift in through an open window but it didn't linger for longer than a few minutes. Slamming windows is so unnecessary and passive aggressive.

It is indeed your right to smoke in your garden. But it does reek, really stink. So your neighbours are telling you that it is a filthy smell. Shouting 'Oi, smelly! ' is a bit rough so they can't do much else.

Do consider giving up, not only does it reek such that a goat wouldnt sit near you but it is bad for you.and quite pricey.

Their clothes and furniture won't smell unless someone is smoking IN their house - that's a bit over dramatic!

We have long gardens but for some reason my neighbour chooses to smoke under my four-year-old's window. He of course perfectly within his rights to do so but it makes me a bit stabby, the selfish inconsiderate git.

Another ex-smoker here. I don't like cigarette smoke anymore now I've realised how strong it can smell, so I understand why they'd want to close their windows. It is your garden, though. I don't think you're being that unreasonable since if they don't like it they can just close the window.

I second an e-cig/vape. I've been off cigarettes for 2 months since I used one of those.

Yeah, stuff outside the front door which you can't smell for ten seconds a day or so as they pull out and in out of the drive. That's comparable to the god-awfulness of cigarette smoke flooding the whole house and not fading for ages. Hmm

Bullying indeed to close a fucking window. Seen it all now!
