To not understand why anyone drinks wine?

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:20

Red wine tastes like vinegar. White wine tastes like toilet cleaner. Everytime I've drank rose I've had to hold my nose and get awful heartburn immediately. Prosecco and champagne are also equally disgusting. Now beer/ale/lager I love and will happily drink.

But seriously, why do so many people drink wine?

Ice cold, super dry, white wine is just the best thing ever.

I wish it wasn't so good.

PottyMouthed · 27/05/2016 12:08

I'm not a wine drinker, I drink beer.
But I did go to a wine tasting evening because I was interested to see if I could find one I could stand without having to shell out £5 a pop to drink cack that I couldn't stomach, And would waste!
I did.
But I still can't bring myself to pay upto £6/£7 for a drink whilst out. Even though I can afford it it still rankles me lol.

StrictlyMumDancing · 27/05/2016 12:13

Ooooh, this reminds me. Must put a bottle of white into the fridge for tonight. Thank you!

nonline · 27/05/2016 12:17

I don't like wine. Or beer. Or coffee. Or tea. Vodka is different.
Friends who are now big wine/coffee drinkers have invested time/tastebuds/money into them which I would rather not.

BaldBaby1970 · 27/05/2016 12:31

BaldBaby - you've got a real chip on your shoulder! Just for the record, normalish people like me eat and drink what we enjoy and can afford. I don't buy a wine because it's expensive, you big wally. And as for cheese, the stinkier the better. It tastes amazing! A fridge should smell of nappies. I can picture you seething away with a slice of mild cheddar (a fridge staple - don't get me wrong) as I devour a wadge of Stilton. I love the taste. It really is as simple as that.

Oh gawd. Maybe I am expressing myself badly. I was aiming to make a comment about the perverse nature of our relationship with alcohol. I've clearly missed the mark by miles.

SpoonintheBin · 27/05/2016 12:40

He is wrong with you people? I like beer, lager, bitter, white wine, red wine, rose, champagne, vodka, scotch whisky, pimms, gin tonic, rum... It is completely beyond my understanding that anyone wouldn't like all of these. That's it, you are all bonkers for having different tastes than me, I feel completely rejected and quit mumsnet. Goodbye all, I now have on other reason to drown my sorrows in any type of alcoholic drinks.

redexpat · 27/05/2016 12:53
  1. How do you know what toilet cleaner tastes like?
  2. I like wine.
  3. Beer and lager make me fart like a bastard.
JimmyGreavesMoustache · 27/05/2016 12:59

maybe you just haven't found your wine yet, OP
TBH I don't really like a lot of the super-dry, flinty NZ sauvs that seem to be everywhere in the bars near me
I prefer something a little softer and fruitier without being sweet - have had some good alsace rieslings like that recently - which very often you can't buy by the glass.

toffeeboffin · 27/05/2016 13:04

Beer tastes like baked potatoes.

GemmaWella81 · 27/05/2016 13:04

Maybe stop buying tosh like Jacobs, Hardys, Casillero del Diablo, Blossom Hill and Gallo would help?? There's a reason they're priced around £5, and what is the British obsession with the label??? You should be looking at the important stuff such as year, grower, blend and so on. Weather conditions in the growing season massively affect that years crop, you taste that variety. The mass market popular wines have a very standardised taste which is down to the chemicals put in to ensure you have a consistent bottle every time.

As ever with MN, do some research. You don't become a wine expert over night, search for wines in a dedicated shop based on your palette preferences and ask for help. I'm a big fan of blackcurrant and berry laced Red Wines, I've learned my favourite types are Bordeaux and Super Tuscan varieties. I tend to only buy wines now from select vineyards online, it's costs more for sure but it means I enjoy my wine, not endure it.Treat yourself to nice bottle and go from there....

Everytime I've drank rose I've had to hold my nose and get awful heartburn immediately

That's so sad! Try drinking it when you aren't holding your nose Grin

HelgaVonHinklebaum · 27/05/2016 13:14

OP: 'AIBU to not understand why other people aren't exactly the same as be?'

Hmm
HelgaVonHinklebaum · 27/05/2016 13:16

JasperDamerel · 27/05/2016 13:18

To be fair, up until very recently most rose wines available in the UK were absurdly dire. My aunt lives in a rose region (her house is surrounded by vines) so we always drink lots when are with her and sometimes I would buy a bottle in England and be so disappointed when I got something that was simultaneously sweet and vinegary.

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 13:55

redexpat It smells like toilet cleaner, therefore I imagine they taste similar ;)

I could not stand gin.
Hated the smell of it - it was vile!!!
I flippin well love it now.
Weird how our taste buds change so much as we get older.

Shannyfanny · 27/05/2016 14:09

wine is great in summer

EveryoneElsie · 27/05/2016 14:11

If you have just eaten vinegar or some other acidic foods that can affect the taste of the wine. Either that or you are drinking corked wine, or cheap bad wine.

Good wine tastes fruity, or of flowers. Mine does, I make my own.

BluebellTheDonkey · 27/05/2016 14:14

Mmmm lovely wine WineGrin

Twinkie1 · 27/05/2016 14:19

I'd rather have a glass of water so to me YANBU. I have tried expensive stuff, DH has run through every kind of the stuff, oaked, unoaked, merlot, Soave, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc , every kind there is, he imports the bloody stuff and I don't like any of them!

I used to drink it to be polite though but feel so crap the next day and have a dreadful nights sleep so I'm the party pooper now and constantly moaned at and told it's nice. I feel like telling people they should take up bloody smoking when they go on and on.

elQuintoConyo · 27/05/2016 20:09

You're not far off MargotLovedTom Grin

Fab username btw. My nickname at univversity was Margot!

useyourimagination · 27/05/2016 20:13

I love wine, I like beer, I can drink lager at a push but you will never, ever get me to drink a cup of tea. I just can't. I hate it but know that many other people love it. Apparently I make a wicked cuppa Confused

Missyaggravation · 27/05/2016 20:15

I'm not keen on wine tbh, unless white or rose with lemonade Grin. My bf likes black coffee with no sugar and red wine. I read independently that luking bitter things and being born in January both predispose you to being a psychopath. He claims both, I eye him
With suspicion lol

Aeroflotgirl · 27/05/2016 20:17

I can't understand the obsession with wine, but an odd glass of Prosecco or Pinot Grigio never goes Amiss.

Pico2 · 27/05/2016 20:20

This quote from Peep Show (right at the end) perfectly summarises my feelings about wine.
