To not understand why anyone drinks wine?

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:20

Red wine tastes like vinegar. White wine tastes like toilet cleaner. Everytime I've drank rose I've had to hold my nose and get awful heartburn immediately. Prosecco and champagne are also equally disgusting. Now beer/ale/lager I love and will happily drink.

But seriously, why do so many people drink wine?

buy into the "snob-value"
Hahahaha!!!
2 boxes of wine (6 bottles) in Asda for £22 so £3.60 a bottle!!???
I'm hardly snobby! Wink

Birdsgottafly · 27/05/2016 10:54

""Have you ever tried wine from a bottle that cost more than £2.99? That might help.""

There are a lot of OK reds around that price. My youngest DD (18) likes an easy drinking red and I don't spend much more on hers.

I loved Vodka and Baileys, when I was in my 20's, then sweet White and Rose, in my 30's.

Moved on to Rum (where had you been all my life), different Ciders, beers and then Reds.

Now, I can't drink and buy alcohol free German beer and have Shandy's, at home.

My point is that even over your lifetime, you can change tastes.

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:55

I dislike spirits in general, especially vodka. Yuck.

I have on occasion had Jack Daniels/Malibu/Southern Comfort with coke and I don't find those too bad at all, but can't drink more than one.

I might have a Baileys at Christmas but it's very very sickly so just the one, or one in hot chocolate.

I like wine. I really like prosecco and champagne. And I hate beer.

We're all different, which is a good thing.

1horatio · 27/05/2016 10:55

I really don't like beer...

But I do like white wine, prosecco, champagne and whisky. And Somersby cider :D I think this list makes me sound like an alcoholic...

If I'm invited somewhere and they only offer red wine (which has actually happend quite often) I may have a little glass, but it makes me so sleepy.

Pseudo341 · 27/05/2016 10:55

Personally I think gin tastes like semen, a taste I don't mind in certain circumstances but I'm certainly not going to drink a glass of the stuff, even if it's got lime and tonic with it.

I don't like rose wine either, too sickly. Would only drink champagne to be polite for a toast but don't really like it. I do love a nice glass of chablis though.

insancerre · 27/05/2016 10:55

I'm not a wine snob either
Mine comes from lidl or bargain booze

scampimom · 27/05/2016 10:56

I don't like oranges much. Estimated impact of this revelation = zero.

What's your point.

DaisyAdair · 27/05/2016 10:58

I love wine, especially a nice red.
Can't stand squash and don't understand why adults drink it.
Different tastes.

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:59

Psuedo You're right there. Gin makes me heave, it reminds me of bathroom cleaner.

I wish I liked alcohol more want to be one of the ladz but there it is.

I sometimes recall my lost youth with a cinzano and lemonade or even a babycham (probably shouldn't have admitted to that).

I don't mind what other people drink though.

NannawifeofBaldr · 27/05/2016 11:01

Because we're all different.

You like craft beer and ale. I like red wine and whisky. I can't see why that is any more difficult to understand than you liking milk chocolate while I like dark.

BreakingDad77 · 27/05/2016 11:01

How do you find good wine? Do you have to go to Laithwaites/Majestic etc or again is just pot luck just more expensive?

I find I get heartburn from some wines too.

Also with ales went on a trip to a mircobrewery and that stuff was fantastic, every pub I go to it tastes winey, horrible after taste and struggle to finish after half way.

HackerFucker22 · 27/05/2016 11:01

Are you in the habit of drinking vinegar and toilet cleaner OP? Confused

To be fair my tastes have changed as up until just over a year ago I couldn't abide red wine. Now I only drink decent Rioja.

SoupDragon · 27/05/2016 11:02

My drink of choice is Craft beer

See, I don't understand why people drink beer. I find it smells rank and tastes as I would exotic from the smell :) that said, I don't much like wine either!

Hide spirits or champagne in a mixer and I'm fine though.

Pagwatch · 27/05/2016 11:03

I love wine. I have a wine shop. I don't drink really cheap supermarket wines because they are mostly mass produced shite but people should drink what they like. I like buying wine from small producers. It's kind of romantic to me. My mum picks her wine up with her tesco shop. She's happy. I'm happy.
Everyone has different taste . It's all fine.
I don't get beer or lager but I wish I did. I've tried but just don't like it.

PerspicaciaTick · 27/05/2016 11:04

Beer is absolutely revolting...all of it. Sometimes a brewer will describe their beer as "sweet", "mellow", "smooth" and I'll think "Oooh, that sounds nice". Then I drink it and it tastes hoppy and vile like all beer. I live in hope, but will stick to my wine, cider, scotch and just about every other sort of alcohol except beer.

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 11:05

I was given a bottle of M&S mulled wine and Christmas and I found that palatable, but it was obvious there was a whole bag of sugar in there so maybe that's why.

I hate sitting in pubs with a pint of beer, it makes me feel manly. I used to date a guy who worked in a local pub, and everytime I'd go in there I drank red wine so he wouldn't think I was common Wink ...blergh

Considering you hate summer as well as wine you don't really have good tastes, do you? Smile

JasperDamerel · 27/05/2016 11:08

Because nice wine is a delicious joy.

I loathe shellfish, but I can quite understand that lots of people think of it as a delicious treat.

ShatnersBassoon · 27/05/2016 11:12

We're all drinking it for show. Expensive vinegary wine with company, delicious Special Brew when alone.

BaldBaby1970 · 27/05/2016 11:14

No indeed.

Wine snobs of a certain hue wouldn't buy a bottle priced at £3.60 from Asda. Not unless some broadsheet wine columnist enticed by the wine maker suddenly declared it to be amaaaaazing.

NicknameUsed · 27/05/2016 11:22

OH drinks craft beer and real ale. He also enjoys wine as much as beer. It isn't an either or. I'm not much of a beer drinker. I can't drink the volume. One pint would last me all night. I like wine and gin, but not in the same glass Grin.

OneWaySystemBlues · 27/05/2016 11:23

"I used to date a guy who worked in a local pub, and everytime I'd go in there I drank red wine so he wouldn't think I was common wink ...blergh"

Why do you give a shit about someone who judges you by what you drink?! Drink what you want ffs! Why would you drink something you don't like because you care what people think?! I really don't get that.
