To not understand why anyone drinks wine?

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:20

Red wine tastes like vinegar. White wine tastes like toilet cleaner. Everytime I've drank rose I've had to hold my nose and get awful heartburn immediately. Prosecco and champagne are also equally disgusting. Now beer/ale/lager I love and will happily drink.

But seriously, why do so many people drink wine?

When I was younger I could only drink sweet sparkling wines but have now refined my tastes and can drink all sorts of wines (except red).

HazelBite · 27/05/2016 10:30

I can take or leave wine, loathe beer etc but can appreciate a good scotch.

Lweji · 27/05/2016 10:31

Red wine tastes like vinegar. White wine tastes like toilet cleaner.

Have you actually tasted vinegar or toilet cleaner?

Conversely, I hate beer and can't understand how anyone likes their vile taste. Grin

BTW, I'm not a huge wine fan, but will drink it and like it sometimes.

Drinkstoomuchcoffee · 27/05/2016 10:31

You need to buy good wine.

Too many people in UK in particular pay lots of money for really bad wine.
They also pay lots of money for really bad olive oil - and continue to use it when it is rancid.

Never been able to work out why.

TimetohittheroadJack · 27/05/2016 10:32

I don't understand why anyone would eat mash potato - it's awful. Or smoothies (it's like being sick in reverse).

But thankfully as a grown up I have the option of eating and drinking whatever the fuck I like - as do you OP. Wine isn't compulsory, if you don't like it don't drink it

Whisky2014 · 27/05/2016 10:33

Yum I love wine. Maybe you are buying cheap crap.

exLtEveDallas · 27/05/2016 10:34

I only drink Vodka, Pimms, Martini and Baileys. Cannot stand all the other spirits, beer, lager, cider or wine (some cocktails are ok mind).

It's actually quite annoying - on holidays it seems to be cheap nasty vodka or soft drinks only. It's weird though, people never seem to believe that I don't drink wine. They are fine with everything else, but me not having wine or "a cheeky little prosecco" seems almost an affront to them. I don't get it?

MargotLovedTom · 27/05/2016 10:35

dementedpixie you need to refine your tastes even more because red wine is by far the best Wink.

OrangePeels · 27/05/2016 10:38

I can't stand beer, lager, cider or whisky.

I love white wine, sparkling wine & rose. I don't like red wine.

Other people like different things. It's how the world works...

I also can't stand coffee.

insancerre · 27/05/2016 10:39

Stop drinking echo falls and try a decent wine
I love a really good sancerre
Or a lovely new Zealand Sauvignon blanc
I'm not keen on lager, I do like a nice dark ale though

OTheHugeManatee · 27/05/2016 10:39

I don't understand why people put stickers on their car that say 'Powered By Fairydust'. Or pay money for Celine Dion concerts. Or go on caravan holidays. But it would be a dull world if we were all the same.

What's your drink of choice then, OP? Blue WKD? Bacardi and Coke? Do enlighten us Smile

SurlyValentine · 27/05/2016 10:40

YABU. Good wine is beautiful, and there are few things in this life better than a cool, crisp sauvignon blanc on a summer's evening even if too much white wine does bring out my inner twat

If you've only ever drunk shit wine, however.....

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 27/05/2016 10:41

All the more for me, you big oddball.

andadietcoke · 27/05/2016 10:41

I don't know either after last night's indulgences

sonlypuppyfat · 27/05/2016 10:41

I don't like wine and it makes me feel like I've failed at being a grown up

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 27/05/2016 10:42

Lots of wine snobs here Grin personally, i love cheap wine!

Razorlightnight · 27/05/2016 10:43

I like Prosecco, champagne, white, red and pink wine, beer, spirits .... completely unfussy!

elQuintoConyo · 27/05/2016 10:44

I can't drink wine unless it is expensive Grin

Beer makes me fart and fall off my barstool.

Spirits turn me into one of the extras from Showgirls with Hattie Jacques' figure .

I am one class act on a night out!

hellsbellsmelons · 27/05/2016 10:44

It must be midday somewhere?
Surely it's wine o'clock.
It's a bank holiday.
OP I shall be drinking much wine over this weekend.
I luuurve it!!!!
Can't stand ale. Bitter nasty stuff.
Lager is too fizzy and filling as is cider (although cider was my drink of choice many years ago until my taste buds matured)
My local pub has 2 glasses of Prosecco for £6 on a Friday - think I know where I'm headed after work.
Bring on the long weekend and the copious amounts of wine!

IHateSummer · 27/05/2016 10:46

Ha, no - I don't like blue WKD lol. Absolutely vile. I hate cider too, the Strongbow/Magners types, I can cope with a pear Koppaburg. My drink of choice is Craft beer Wink

All alcohol tastes foul but it's a big money spinner so we're persuaded that it's actually fun and/or sophisticated (depending on your income and propensity to buy into the "snob-value" of a product) to drink it and so we do.

Also the general population, no matter how expensive their tipple, needs to get out of it now and then.

HyacinthBouquetNo1 · 27/05/2016 10:48

I like the taste of beer, but I have many food intolerances and it now makes me vomit, so I can only drink cider or wine.

I am drinking wine lately, a lovely German Riesling, not fizzy, or too sweet, I have a couple of large glasses at the weekend, nice Grin

MargotLovedTom · 27/05/2016 10:50

ElQuinto I'd love to see you on a night out where you have a bit of everything, and turn into a flatulent, gyrating, exotic dancer trying in vain to hold onto your glass of expensive Barolo whilst tripping over your own feet Grin.

pottymummy · 27/05/2016 10:51

I love wine. Not all wine. Generally a nice red. I used to like beer. Now I can't stand it. I'm happiest with a bottle glass of prosecco. We're all different, innit ;)

Sallystyle · 27/05/2016 10:52

I can't stand white wine.

I like red wine and I like a couple of brands of Rose.

I am not a big drinker and usually drink the sweet spirits when I do drink but I had a glass of Rose white zinfandel the other day with my mum and I really enjoyed it. The only problem is wine goes straight to my head.
